5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on Patent Law
This is undoubtedly the BEST book on Patent Law. It is written so well that you could read it as a bed time story. It's name couldn't be more accurate -- "Essentials" -- that's ALL it is. No fluff, no distractions. Just pure distilled patent law principles and concepts. There's a reason this book sells for $100. It would be worth buying at twice that cost. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the scientific professional
Perfect for the scientific professional or manager who must deal5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent warm-up for the real thing
While waiting to find out if my application to the PTO to sit for the next patent bar exam was approved, and prior to obtaining a full-fledged course of study on patent practice, I decided to invest in this book to get a better idea of what I was getting into.I must say that not only did I get a comprehensive introduction to the topic, but it was also an enjoyable read. The author uses subtle humor to get the points across, as exemplified by his use of various, patented mousetrap designs as examples, and his knowledge of patent law is superb.Indeed, there is hardly a page in the book sans footnotes and citations to case law.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Multimedia Law broken down to basics
Recently having been enrolled in a multimedia law class for my degree program, I found the information in the book valuable enough for submission to this review. The content herin is definately worth checking out if you are an individual seeking to create multimedia content. Though the text islaw oriented, it reads quite well. Having zero law experience didn't hindermy growth as a law weilding artist. I learned such invaluable tools ascontract writing, copyright law, the five rights held to a copyright, soundlaw (mp3's are illegal) and many other tools to help me stay safe in theindustry. Though complex in structure the content is delivered in a formatworth checking out. Once you can cut through the rhetoric that all lawyersspeak this can be a wonderous tool to any multimedia creators library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent IP overview for managers and investors
This book offers a comprehensive overview of intellectual property issues, suitable for (among others) high-tech executives, entrepreneurs, and investors in early stage companies (all of which describe me).Its coverage includes trademarks (6 chapters, 70 pages), copyrights (5 chapters, 68 pages), patents (4 chapters, 40 pages), and trade secrets (1 chapter, 18 pages), plus chapters on unfair competition, owning IP created by employees and independent contractors, and conducting internal IP audits.I have experience with software copyrights and biotechnology patents; this book is fairly strong on the former, but only briefly mentions the latter. The material on internal IP audits is rather brief (12 pages) but includes a fairly good audit checklist, and an action plan for protecting a company's IP; also, the first chapter should be required reading for managers, since it points out the many places in a business where valuable IP may be found, department by department.1-0 out of 5 stars Save the money
I found this book very obtuse and thought the author tried to make this subject much more difficult than it really is.Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
In the interests of safety, we'll refrain from quoting this fine book by Deborah E. Bouchoux, a specialist in intellectual property who teamed with AMACOM to create that rarest of volumes: a straightforward book about law that is simple to read (it's a formula she should patent). This comprehensive volume covers the nuts and bolts of U.S. patent and trademark law. It also gives advice on how to protect your intellectual property and avoid infringement, and reports on the latest patent trends in high tech. Of most concern for general business managers, Bouchoux reviews how (and why) to conduct intellectual property audits within your organization. With intellectual property emerging as the new corporate treasure of the knowledge economy, we [...] suggest that research and development managers and executives of every stripe study this volume carefully. Why should your attorney be the only one who understands what you really own?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended, articulate, and thoughtful
With his superbly presented work, The Ontology Of Cyberspace: Law, Philosophy, And The Future Of Intellectual Property, David Koepsell addresses the problems of protecting intellectual property rights in the computer age. Koepsell, Executive Director of the Center for Applied Ontology and adjunct assistant professor of philosophy at the State University of New York: Buffalo, defines terminology, identifies the problems inherent in a rapidly expanding electronic communications technology that transcends national boundaries, and has become ubiquitous in our personal, social, economic, educational, business, and literary life. The Ontology Of Cyberspace presents both the scholarly community and the non-specialist general reader with a very highly recommended, articulate, definitive, thoughtful, informative, and "reader friendly" text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay on law, but philosophically meatless
David Koepsell's claim in this volume is easily summarized: "cyber"-type objects do not subsist in some mysterious Land of Otherwhere; electronic media possess no strange mystical powers; intellectual property law does not require any major revolutions in order to deal with such topics; indeed it should be simplified in order to eliminate the artificial distinction between invented processes and original expressions.5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifying Cyberspace, Revolutionizing Intellectual Prop.
David Koepsell is a philosophically and legally trained internet ontologist who has decisively established cyberspace as not a realm populated by virtual objects, but as an arrangement or ordinary objects (like electrical charges) resident in computers and peripherals, and nothing more. Any internet ontologist, any lawyer dealing with intellectual property, and anyone facinated with computers and the internet will find this book a welcome and refreshing antidote to mystical, McLuhan-esque conceptions. And Koepsell explains several alternatives to the complex and prolix system of patents and copyrights as ways of addressing intellectual property. A MUST READ!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for practitioners
Aside from its scholarship, this book is well-organized, well-indexed and down-to-earth. This isn't a blow-by-blow commentary on various treaties. The chapters are based on practical issues like subject matter of the various rights, choice of law, ownership, etc., making it relatively easy to find the answers a practitioner needs. It also helps you to cut to the chase when dealing with treaties, instead of wading every time through the Paris, Brussels, Rome, etc. iterations of diplomatic vagueness. And there are plenty of useful examples from domestic law, especially of European countries. For the price, this is a trove of information not easy to find elsewhere. I salute those who read it from cover to cover for sheer intellectual enjoyment; for me it's a valuable working book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete review of Copyrigth
This is not a book for the average reader.Although anyone can appreciate the exquisite writing of Pr Goldstein, this book is tailored for lawyer who are interested in Copyright and international trade issues.5-0 out of 5 stars World's leading copyright expert
This is an indispensable one-volume reference for practitioners and scholars of international copyright. It is a unique synthesis of copyright practice and law, taking into account the Bern Convention of 1989, the TRIPs Agreement concluded five years later, and the advent of the Internet. National copyright rules on protectible subject matter, ownership, term, and rights are covered in detail and compared from country to country, as are topics on moral rights and neighboring rights. Separate sections cover such important topics as territoriality, national treatment and choice of law, as well as the treaty and trade arrangements that underlie substantive copyright norms.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overview of copyright history through court cases
Copyright's Highway is not an overview of or introduction to copyright law.Rather it gives clearly written descriptions of the histories of some influential court cases relating to copyright and slanted towards copyright issues on the internet.Despite the title this book is very much slanted to the celestial jukebox and away from Guetenburg - after the second chapter we are in the 20th century.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This is not intended as a survey of copyright, although it does succeed admirably in introducing nonlawyers to the field and defining the major themes for those already in the field. Its primary focus, however, is upon several key cases and key issues, which are explored in detail, partly through the eyes of some of the major participants. This is of course a bit dated, and it is, alas, out of print. But if you at all interested in reading an overview from the undisputed master in the field, track down and read this book.Whether you're already into copyright or just wanting to find out about it, you'll come away with an enriched understanding of copyright.3-0 out of 5 stars Good but wordy
My background is economics and finance and not law.Maybe because of that I found this book to be wordy and a little long-winded.The author approaches the subject from a lawyer's perspective. The book could havebeen better if it the author went into less detail on the one or two courtcases he highlights and spent some more effort exploring some interestingconcepts he introduces.Economic concepts like public good and privategood, complementary and substitute goods, monopoly and copyrights, the roleof the marketplace, and the intersection of copyright with natural rightswere hinted at, but never fully developed. The highlight of the book ishis chapter on the two cultures of copyright.Economists and lawyerssometimes fail to give the proper weight to how culture affects outcomes insociety.Overall this is an interesting book that could have been betterif the author was more pointed in his writing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting topic...bad book
The topic of this book certainly sounded interesting, especially since I was taking a Media Laws course at the time I read it.However, this book was bogged down with too many problems for me to recommend it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Too bad
The history outlined in THE PIRATES AND THE MOUSE is essential reading. Unfortunately, Mr. Levin has foreclosed the chances that a *great* history, as opposed to a good one, of the Air Pirates controversy will ever be written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dan O' Neill Gets His Due
bob levin's writing style aside, this book is an extremely informative expose of the first amendment with regards to copyright infringement and parody. the champion here (or protagonist if you will) is the enlightened dan o' neill. even though the "air pirates" was a collective effort by london, richards, halgren, and flenniken, o'neill was the one who braved this whole mess out with humor, wit, and defiant intellect. the famous phrase "the pen is mightier than the sword" underestimates the relentlessness and ruthlessness of the disney empire against an intellectual threat that put the "disney intellect" to shame; i am again refering to o' neill.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Narrative, PCT and EPO rules joined by index&flow chart.
This compact little book includes the rules with annotations of (European) case decisions. No lengthy narrative, just the rules and annotations, but two valuable tools are included.First, the Index is very helpful inmoving around the book.Secondly, there are FLOW CHARTS which outline theprocesses of normal examination, appeals and oppositions.I am currentlyusing the book to try to better grasp a client's post hearing rights beforethe European Patent Office, and it is most helpful. This book was wellworth its cost. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Must Have For All Aspiring Authors
This book should've been called Entertainment & Media Law A to Z.It is both informative and extremely thorough in its description of the legal and business affairs of the publishing industry. It also provides basic information on recording industry practices as well as copyright & trademark law. This book does a terrific job of informing authors of many valuable resources that exist to assist them.As an attorney, I was impressed with the case law cited by the author. However, this book is written in plain English, and written in a way that people of all backgrounds could easily understand.I would say, to aspiring authors or literary agents alike, this book is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entries, numerous tips, tricks, techniques, and warnings for the aspiring author in a legally complex world
The latest installment in the "A-Z Legal Series" from Capital Books, Author Law A-Z: A Desktop Guide To Writers' Rights And Responsibilities packs the collective wisdom of author-lawyers Sallie Randolph, Stacy Davis, Anthony Elia and Karen Dustman into plain terms for lay readers - and writers! Author Law A-Z is organized like an encyclopedia, with A-Z entries of common legal and writing industry terms or issues that every author should know, from "abridgement" and "acceptable manuscript" to "young adult books" and Zapruder film", which denotes a landmark legal case about film rights concerning the home video film that accidentally documented the assassination of JFK. In addition to the entries, numerous tips, tricks, techniques, and warnings for the aspiring author in a legally complex world, from a sample demand letter (as written to a vanity print-on-demand publisher masquerading as a traditional publisher) to a sample complaint for copyright infringement, advice for what to say when one's editor calls, and much more. Enthusiastically recommended for spot research or simple cover-to-cover reading in order to grasp valuable basic lessons of the writing and publishing business.
