5-0 out of 5 stars An American vision
Intellectual property is a complex issue, and most books on the subject deals mostly on the legal practice or economic aspects of the matter. This academic-intended volume has virtually all basic texts needed to understand the core problems of the subject, and is a precious help to serious students and researchers. A treatment of the International problems related to the matter and some further discussion of the crucial theme of public domain would be recommended in a future edition. But, alas, it is a precious work, and I have included it and the basic bibliography of my graduate IP courses in Brazil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ars eligendi
The book edited by Profs. Merges and Ginsburg is, without being rethoric, simply an extraordinary reading, a powerful and very enjoyable tool that is to help all of us in addressing and discovering the most important literature on U.S. Intellectual Property in the best way. References on economic/market issues concerning copyright and digital technology are abundant and thought-provoking as well as the reported (and still open!) debate about the appropriateness of current patent, trademark and industrial design protection. I'm sure that everyone interested in improving his or her understanding on the complex world of IP may greatly benefit from the readings such a powerful guide provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stereotype buster about women for both gender in academia
I read this wonderful book quite some time ago and was so moved by all the info that i wrote an article on forgotten women of history for a community magazine (with examples from ancient Egypt, India and China. Wish growing up I knew all the great discoveries and inventions women did and are doing even today and not getting the recognition they deserve. [...]
5-0 out of 5 stars Uncovers unrecognized achievements of women
Many inventions and achievements attributed to men actually were first made by a woman! Some of the inventions and achievements profiled in this book I was aware of, but many were surprises. Men and women both would benefit from reading this book: Women-to see what women have achieved and as models for what is possible and men- for a wake-up as to the achievements and capabilities of women. Fortunately women are more likely to be recognized now for their achievements, but we still have a long way to go. When I authored a book on small businesses, I encountered many instances where women did not receive credit for their contributions which were often greater than the men in their business. This book is educational and inspirational. Give this book to a woman you want to inspire!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and little known contributions by women
The book can be read as an entity or read randomly as time allows because each inventor has a brief self-contained section in the larger chapters. The book is well-written and it is not an academic punishment to read. There is enough detail to set the reader into further research but it is light enough to provide information in an enjoyable way. The inventors often have insightful quotes. It should be required reading in schools to encourage more participation in science, math, computers and intellectual curiosity in general.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine for Survey Course
The previous review suggests that the casebook is not a good choice for someone wanting to focus in greater detail on patent prosecution or litigation. I imagine this is intended for use in a survey course, and think it's fine. It certainly does not teach the MPEP or prepare someone to take the patent bar, but that is not its purpose; I used the PatBar course for that. As far as patent litigation, I won't a course in that until next semester, but I believe this casebook did a nice job in surveying the important principles in litigation.

3-0 out of 5 stars standard casebook, no real fireworks!
This casebook contained all the usual cases that are typical in a patent law/intellectual property casebook. Unfortunately, there should have been more content which described the patent process as well as the patent prosecution procedure in order to allow the reader to fit the case law into the appropriate scheme of things. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why modern intellectual property rights are in a big mess - and how to fix the problem
MATH YOU CAN'T USE: PATENTS, COPYRIGHT, AND SOFTWARE uses the author's experience as a programmer and an economist to describe why modern intellectual property rights are in a big mess - and how to fix the problem. MATH YOU CAN'T USE could also have been featured in our computer section, but is highlighted here for its wider-ranging interest to any college-level collection containing not only legal and computer books, but holdings considering intellectual property rights, issues, and development protection.

4-0 out of 5 stars how to protect an invention; not how to make one
The book offers a good explanation to the tyro of what it takes to protect your invention. The book is not really about inventing, per se. Despite what the title says. A careful read of the contents reveals relatively little discussion about the raw inventing process. That is, how does one come up with an original idea that can be patentable? It may well be that such a question has no answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bingo!
I treasure Dr. Pat Choates new title (book). It is an easy read and a total epiphany. I thought I totally knew the negative side of so-called free trade and after perusing HOT PROPERTY I realized I knew little. Dr. Choate not only pinned down the significance of intellectual property (new ideas product-wise and the intangible, such as music, books, trademarks, software, methods, processes, and so forth) that stimulates our economy, but also makes clear how Japan in particular has bought off disloyal former D.C. government agents of all descriptions(Congressional staff, legislators, etc.)who have helped Japanese cartels steal the ideas as their own possession.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Topic, Lukewarm Treatment
This book is in large part a polemic against intellectual piracy and in favor of intellectual property protection. Author Pat Choate was third-party candidate Ross Perot's running mate in the 1996 U.S. presidential election. It is no surprise, then, that the book features charged rhetoric and less than scrupulously dispassionate analysis. Nevertheless, it provides an amusing, easy-to-read introduction to the history of intellectual property protection and its role in U.S. industrial development. That history takes some surprising turns. Eli Whitney, famed as the inventor of the cotton gin, went broke trying unsuccessfully to defend his patents. Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison also experienced patent and piracy headaches. Choate recounts these stories with verve and style. He also attempts to be even-handed as when, for example, he draws a parallel between intellectual property violations and the use of traditional knowledge (such as folk medicine) without compensation to the peoples who preserved the traditions. Ultimately, though, Choate focuses more on identifying problems than at proposing solutions. We recommend this book to managers in businesses such as pharmaceuticals and media, which are struggling to preserve their intellectual property rights internationally, as well as to policy-makers and others who are interested in legal and business history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for its ethical, moral and wide-ranging social issues application
Hot Property: The Stealing Of Ideas In An Age Of Globalization is especially recommended for its ethical, moral and wide-ranging social issues application. The problem of pirating and counterfeiting has been magnified with online availability making it a cinch to steal artistic and scientific creations: a habit which is draining our core economy, maintains author Pat Choate. Hot Property provides both a history of intellectual property conflicts and copyright, and a link between copyright issues and a healthy American economy.

Editorial Review

Scripting pearls of wisdom and drafting literary masterpieces is only part of a writer's job. There are many legal issues tied to writing, and it's better to read up on them in advance than to be reminded when it's too late that ignorance is no excuse under the law. Copyright laws alone are the subject of four chapters in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best legal guide for writers.
This is a terrific guide that tells writers at all levels what they need to know to avoid legal problems and negotiate successfully. It has the broadest coverage and is clearly written with many cases turned intofascinating and eduational anecdotes. I can't recommend it too highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great book-if you have a law degree (very dense reading)
I am about to be a published author. (scheduled for the summer of 2000) My hero is William Zinsser, author of On Writing Well. I like him because he writes so...well. Mr. Crawford needs to read Zinsser's book-several times. To be fair, Mr. Crawford's Legal Guide is organized and thorough, butthe wording is stiff and technical. I feel as though I am reading a collegelaw (or business) text book. He has no humor. I have an urge to drag out myyellow highlighter because there will be a test later.I am convincedI can read about anything if the material is well written. Mr. Crawford isalways grammatically correct, but I have to work too hard to understandhim. Legal Guide would be a wonderful book if you have a background in lawor business. Since I have neither, Irecommend Bunnin and Berens, TheWriter's Legal Companion. The style is friendlier for new authors who lackexperience in the business of contracts, copyright and publishing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Readable, informative and highly recommended.
I bought this book as background reading for a client assignment, and was impressed with the author's balanced perspective about a subject that - as the recent debate over digital rights management illustrates - tends to create strong opinions.
4-0 out of 5 stars A real solid exploration of the market in fake goods
When the voracious consumer society meets the international market in fake goods, the demand is massive, particularly since buyers covet brand image over quality or authenticity. That's the force behind the billion-dollar market in counterfeit designer goods, but it does not explain the demand for phony industrial goods. That market is based on price alone. The two markets combine to create a huge problem that author Tim Phillips examines at the global level. Phillips certainly has done his legwork, as this book - which is written in a journalistic style that could have been tighter - makes clear. He takes us to flea markets in Russia, warehouses in Manhattan, cottages in China, and the offices of police and regulators worldwide to show how pirated luxury consumer goods, software and industrial parts are bought and sold to suspecting and unsuspecting consumers worldwide. He provides names, places and details of the crimes. We find this informative treatment of a pervasive global problem both enlightening and disturbing, and recommend it to people in supply line logistics, branding, corporate intellectual property and law enforcement.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a powerful read
Some of the reviewers seem to have been expecting a text book or a guide to businesses about how they solve their problem, but the fact that this book does not take that approach is the best thing about it for me. There are already several books which try to do this, but the fight against counterfeiters (I have some limited experience of this in my job) is not that simple - so those books are either superficial or a set of boring checklists, tables and lawyer speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book to get a fast and accurate overview of patents -- what they are, how they are created and defended, etc. Although some books have more detail (e.g., "Patent, Copyright & Trademark: An Intellectual Property Desk Reference") have more detail, this book condenses it into the necessary parts which are excellent for beginning jurists, expert witnesses, or someone contemplating creating a patent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ideal introduction to the patenting process
An impressive and "reader friendly" compendium of information and instruction Nolo's Patents For Beginners is the ideal introduction to the patenting process for novice inventors and entrepreneurs. Written in plain English, the reader is provided with up-to-date principles of patent law; shown how to properly "read" a patent application; shown the nuts and bolts of patent ownership; informed what the inventor's social or economic status is irrelevant; learn how to analyze and resolve patent disputes; what patents don't inherently provide "defensive" protection; and what the fundamentals of international patent law are. Nolo's Patents For Beginners is a highly recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, corporate, and community library reference patent law collections. ... Read more

Clearance and Copyright is a clear language guide to copyright issues as they affect filmmakers and to how to clear copyrighted work so that you can use them in your film.It has sections on clearing the script, any music that can be heard in you film, clips from other movies, sculptures etc which may appear in the background and just about any issue that could come up.At the end of each section Donaldson includes sample contracts which might be used to clear that particular item.
