Is the Internet Doomed?

good overview of DRM ideas
Van Tassel gives an overview of current DRM methods. At a level understandable by a non-engineer or programmer. She describes why DRM is so important to many media companies. Or, in fact, to any company that has assets in digital form. If you've never dealt with DRM, her book is a useful introduction.

Perhaps the most revolutionary technological concept to emerge in the super-heated days of the internet investment bubble (with apologies to one-click ordering), the peer-to-peer .mp3 file transfer system developed by barely reformed computer hacker Shawn Fanning fueled a company that at its peak claimed 70 million users and ranked as the fastest-growing company in history. All the Duplicity
Here we have a voluminous history of the Napster phenomenon, but only from a certain jaundiced angle. As a critical outside journalist, Joseph Menn was unable to directly interview some of the principal players in the saga, and often relies on legal documentation. In turn, much of his research is based on secondary sources and hearsay from people not directly involved in the events described. This all taints many parts of the book and reduces its believability. We do get a good rundown of the genesis of Napster, as teenage computer whiz Shawn Fanning and some ambitious hacker friends had a brilliant idea about music file sharing, which then got far more monstrous than anyone could have ever expected. Menn then spends most of the book describing the byzantine investment deals and corporate wheeling and dealing to launch the doomed Napster corporation, in ways that were preposterous even during the dot-com bubble. In the end, enthusiastic people with great ideas tried to cash in, and watched forlornly as others let everything crash and burn.

Tried hard to finish this, but couldn't.This is significant because I hate wasting money - and therefore, usually slough through to the finish on even the most unbearable works. But here in Jo Menn's "All The Rave" I found it was everything BUT Interesting and had to throw in the towel after the first 100 pages. Major disappointment - Uncritical & Lacking Analysis

A Pirates Life For Me
This book is a description of controlling a barrel of monkeys.The authors tackle the complex and almost untamable world of intellectual property piracy.To their credit this is a very accessible book, they left the detailed legal opinions on the cutting room floor.They also cover the subject in a rather even handed way.At first they were falling onto the side I fall onto, that any of this downloading etc is stealing plain and simple.They end up with a far more mellowed view and they almost convinced me along the way.
A Complex Problem Indeed
In Pirates of the Digital Millennium, co-authors Rochester and Gantz tackle a subject with many far-reaching facets, and artfully illuminate the players, their motives, and their means.
Well written, balanced perspective
The digital rights management problem is complex. Consumers have a right to own what they buy, and fairly use it. And commercial companies and artists have a right to make money on products that consumers are willing to pay for. Finding the right balance is complex, and that's what this book sets out to do.

Cutting Through a Complex Area
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.
Easy to use, espec. with CD
This has all the basic forms you need.I had them on the CD and was able to "fix" them up to fit my needs more precisely.It was quick and user friendly.When you give a person a contract to sign, you want it to look professional.When done, I removed everything from my computer, and thereby, didn't use up memory.

Another Fill-in Test?
The most difficult part of filling-in forms is understanding the questions. Attorney Tad Crawford not only provides the forms you need, he explains your choices for each line. Outstanding
Mr. Hitchcock's book has made my life a lot easier. All the info you need is right there. I'm sure you could take the time to look some of it up, but there are a lot of techniques and tricks that I never would have thought of. I especially like the Searcher's Secrets that are highlighted throughout the book.
New, updated version of an excellent resource
With the constant improvement in computer resources available to the inventor who wants to do his own patent searching, an updated version of this fine book is a welcome sight. Observe the dates on reviews of this book to see that those citing a need for an update are old and should be dismissed.

One patent book that is worth the money
There are too many books about patents these days that are written by consultants (including lawyers-turned-consultants). Most of them are fluff that try to promote some new buzzword, like "intellectual capital management." There's nothing wrong with having a broad and managerial view about intellectual property, but unfortunately most such books are filled with useless consultant-style diagrams and vague notions such as that intellectual asset managers' duties include "sharing best practices", "leadership", and of course "career development for IAMs."
Nice and friendly thinking about Patent
