A personal tale from the Digital Freedom Front
I started off a review of a Bruce Sterling novel with a statement of full disclosure, so I must do the same here--even more so. Mike is a long-time friend from when I lived in Austin, Texas. He knew me, as they say, when. After my disastrous first year at the University of Texas, he helped me identify the classes to take that would awaken my interest (including Shakespeare at Winedale). Mike grilled me on my reading critically, forcing me to be able to talk about books on a level besides enjoyment. He was also the organizer of the Dull Men's Club, a regular meeting group for argument and drinking that often became similar to the Austin BBS Users Reading Group. helpful overview on law for the lay businessperson
_Internet_ fills a much needed void in providing a succinct overview of intellectual property and libel liability for the lay public, particularly as it relates to the electronic dissemination of information.The hypothetical examples (familiar to law school students) provide illustrations of what potential carelessness could cause in a humorous yet only mildly farfetched style. Pretty Well-done book on IP
Overall, I thought this book was pretty well-done.
Top case-book on IP
The authors are luminaries of Boalt, UC Berkeley. The book is for students, and therefore concentrates on precedents. For European lawyers, better versed in commentaries and systematic works, this always is a problem. As such the work is the best, talking of high tech and intellectual property law.Do not forget "Software and Internet Law" by the same authors + Pam Samuelson. This book is an excellent text dealing with multiple aspects of American intellectual property law.As a Canadian law student I found its approach of using first principles to introduce readers to the basics of intellectual property law very useful.From the first principles of copywright, trademark and patent law the book proceeds to give an insightful exposition of the developments of each of these areas of law in response to recent developments in the sciences.While some attention is paid to biotechnology in the patent section of the book, most of the work focusses on the impact of developments in intellectual property law as a result of information technology.Not only is this book timely but it also gives a very in depth analysis of these timely issues that I have not come across in other texts on the subject.I have just completed my LL.B at an excellent Canadian Law school.I specialised almost entirely in intellectual property law and found this to be my favourite text. Law and the Internet provides the meat for the debate.
In the emergent new forest of cyber law there is a growing need for collective works on this subject.There are many issues, which face lawyers as a result of this new technology.
