5-0 out of 5 stars Why modern intellectual property rights are in a big mess - and how to fix the problem
MATH YOU CAN'T USE: PATENTS, COPYRIGHT, AND SOFTWARE uses the author's experience as a programmer and an economist to describe why modern intellectual property rights are in a big mess - and how to fix the problem. MATH YOU CAN'T USE could also have been featured in our computer section, but is highlighted here for its wider-ranging interest to any college-level collection containing not only legal and computer books, but holdings considering intellectual property rights, issues, and development protection.

MATH YOU CAN'T USE
5-0 out of 5 stars a book you can use...
Klemens has a knack for bringing humour and spirit to a subject most people might be inclined to regard as dull (i.e., software patent policy) - as well as explaining why addressing that subject is crucial. His background as a trained economist and practicing computer programmer gives him inside understanding of both the theoretical policy debate as well as its practical impact on the work of coding. The book is an invaluable resource - and you'll love the banana protective device diagram. ... Editorial Review

There was a time when cryptography--the making and breaking of secret codes--was of interest only to spies, diplomats, and the occasional eccentric. Those days are over, and the reason, as Diffie and Landau explain, is that secret codes have become the key to preserving traditional notions of privacy at a time when technology is rapidly altering the nature of human communication.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom is Privacy-based
For those out of the crypto loop, the lead author, Whitfield Diffie was co-developer of public key encryption technology at Stanford several decades ago and stands as one of the most knowledgeable figures in the field of cryptography. Though the public policy aspects of cryptography are an important part of what this book is about, it is really a book with much broader implications, especially with the passage of the Patriot Act which strips U.S. citizens of any meaningful court oversight in the search and surveillance arenas. Now that the justice department has unleashed the Magic Lantern trojan horse on the public, the warnings found in this book pale by comparison since it was written before 9/11 events. The author delineates the many rationale for why respect for privacy is a good idea and how arguments to the contrary are basically flawed. Those in law enforcement and national security roles cyclically lobby for totalitarian capabilities, get them, become insatiable with MKULTRA type scenarios, get discovered, get their hands slapped and start over again when the headlines subside. Meanwhile taxpayers take a beating in lost jobs, ruined reputations, unwarranted jail time, suicides and the like. Since it is obvious that lawmakers have been delinquent in learning these lessons, what will happen when someone detonates a nuclear device in a large city and the justice department introduces legislation for mandatory implants? How will you be able to turn back after that? Tick, tick, tick...5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book
During the civil war in Beirut some years ago, Life magazine ran a photoessay of people lounging around a hotel pool, ostensibly oblivious to thehostilities around them. 3-0 out of 5 stars More of the Same From This Author
Previously, I have reviewed "The ePolicy Handbook: Designing and Implementing Effective E-Mail, Internet and Software Policies" and "E-Mail Rules - A Business Guide to Managing Policies, Security, and Legal Issues for E-Mail and Digital Communication", the first two books in a "trilogy" by Nancy Flynn of the ePolicy Institute. As I have mentioned in recent presentations on developing effective information technology policies, it is not realistic or recommended to adopt policies without taking a holistic view of the vulnerabilities, threats, and risk appetite of the organization.
2-0 out of 5 stars Timely, but thin on content
This book is very timely given the growth of IM in the workplace. However, I found that it is very wordy, with minimal content.Could have been condensed into a short article. On the other hand, if you are new to IM or security, the book will be a good introduction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars well-written and nearly comprehensive
Benjamin, Lichtman, and Shelanski have written an excellent book on U.S. telecommunications law.The book provides a glimpse at the early history of U.S. radio telecommunications and brings the reader up to fairly recent developments. Explanations of the spectrum, arguments of why broadcast media have been regulated (children's tv, indecency, Fairness Doctrine, for example), selected court cases and FCC actions are provided."Notes and questions" are provided at the end of segments within each chapter and help the reader anticipate issues addressed subsequently. The book is well written and the authors have an enjoyable sense of humor. While the book does give attention to the Internet, readers might want to supplement the book's coverage by reading Sharon Black's "Telecommunications Law in the Internet Age" published in 2002 by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book introduces basic concepts about how the government regulates broadcast television, radio, cable, telephone, and Internet service. It includes easy-to-read discussions and also excerpts of important documents and cases.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial
I surprisingly agree with the other reviews.I would not agree that this is a good law school text book. The text - for a legal scholarly work - is largely devoid of citations. Thus the book as a secondary source recounts history almost as hearsay without an ability to get to the primary history. In addition, the subject matter is superficial and insufficiently developed. The Kingsbury Commitment, a huge moment in telecommunications history, is given one paragraph. There is little new here that is not in other books. There is content that is missing. The author discusses Computer I and Computer II, but not Computer III even though that proceeding took place well before the publication of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars One Star is Generous.
The "Book" was a let-down.It failed to satisfy even my most basic expectations for this subject matter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehhensive text on telecommunications regulations
Considering that this textbook was intended primarily for law school students, it is equally applicable to telecommunications graduate programs. The material presented is both interesting and helpful in understanding thelaw and regulation of telecommunications carriers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource--easy to understand and smart
I heard about this book from a friend in business school who said it was on the recommended reading list. I bought the book and now I understand why it is considered one of the most useful books of the type. I'm persuaded by the writing, the examples, and the presentation. Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge waste of time and $$$
If it was allowed I would give this book a big fat zero. Alas, one star is as low as it gets. It skims over everything. Nothing practical in here. If you feel compelled to get this book buy a used copy. I am in the process of reading "Start Your Own Business" By Rieva Lesonsky which proves to be a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful and Interesting!
I found this clearly written book to be helpful and even sort ofinteresting to read. It covers various aspects of setting up a business that uses a website and also setting up the website as well.(I didn't realize that many legal issues could affect your website, such as copyright issues and other publishing laws.)It also provides some fundamentals about contract law and system development you need to know in order to put a website in place. It is a good practical mix of legal and business advice. The sections on how to go about actually building your site, what functions and what content should be on it, are informative and full of issues that I would not have thought of on my own.The book is in a handbook format, and I will probably also refer to it with various questions as I go forward with the process. It also has forms in the back that I can fill in to create a budget. My business is a start-up but it seems like this book would be helpful for anyone who needs to know the legal and practical issues surrounding their business's website. ...
