Editorial Review

It was the best of ideas, it was the worst of ideas. Perhaps the most revolutionary technological concept to emerge in the super-heated days of the internet investment bubble (with apologies to one-click ordering), the peer-to-peer .mp3 file transfer system developed by barely reformed computer hacker Shawn Fanning fueled a company that at its peak claimed 70 million users and ranked as the fastest-growing company in history. Not bad for the out-of-wedlock son of the guitarist for a Boston-area Aerosmith cover band still in his teens. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars All the Duplicity
Here we have a voluminous history of the Napster phenomenon, but only from a certain jaundiced angle. As a critical outside journalist, Joseph Menn was unable to directly interview some of the principal players in the saga, and often relies on legal documentation. In turn, much of his research is based on secondary sources and hearsay from people not directly involved in the events described. This all taints many parts of the book and reduces its believability. We do get a good rundown of the genesis of Napster, as teenage computer whiz Shawn Fanning and some ambitious hacker friends had a brilliant idea about music file sharing, which then got far more monstrous than anyone could have ever expected. Menn then spends most of the book describing the byzantine investment deals and corporate wheeling and dealing to launch the doomed Napster corporation, in ways that were preposterous even during the dot-com bubble. In the end, enthusiastic people with great ideas tried to cash in, and watched forlornly as others let everything crash and burn.

Tried hard to finish this, but couldn't.This is significant because I hate wasting money - and therefore, usually slough through to the finish on even the most unbearable works. But here in Jo Menn's "All The Rave" I found it was everything BUT Interesting and had to throw in the towel after the first 100 pages.1-0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment - Uncritical & Lacking Analysis
Before buying/reading this book ask yourself if you want to invest the time/money reading what the author promises goes below the "surface" on all previous Napster reporting when most of the book's focus is sugjugated on events/descriptions like:Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pirates Life For Me
This book is a description of controlling a barrel of monkeys. The authors tackle the complex and almost untamable world of intellectual property piracy. To their credit this is a very accessible book, they left the detailed legal opinions on the cutting room floor. They also cover the subject in a rather even handed way.At first they were falling onto the side I fall onto, that any of this downloading etc is stealing plain and simple. They end up with a far more mellowed view and they almost convinced me along the way.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Complex Problem Indeed
In Pirates of the Digital Millennium, co-authors Rochester and Gantz tackle a subject with many far-reaching facets, and artfully illuminate the players, their motives, and their means.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, balanced perspective
The digital rights management problem is complex. Consumers have a right to own what they buy, and fairly use it. And commercial companies and artists have a right to make money on products that consumers are willing to pay for. Finding the right balance is complex, and that's what this book sets out to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Through a Complex Area
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, espec. with CD
This has all the basic forms you need.I had them on the CD and was able to "fix" them up to fit my needs more precisely. It was quick and user friendly. When you give a person a contract to sign, you want it to look professional. When done, I removed everything from my computer, and thereby, didn't use up memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Fill-in Test?
The most difficult part of filling-in forms is understanding the questions. Attorney Tad Crawford not only provides the forms you need, he explains your choices for each line. He begins with a discussion of contracting. Then he provides each contract with a discussion of that agreement and a negotiation checklist. Read more

Mr. Hitchcock's book has made my life a lot easier. All the info you need is right there. I'm sure you could take the time to look some of it up, but there are a lot of techniques and tricks that I never would have thought of. I especially like the Searcher's Secrets that are highlighted throughout the book.

With the constant improvement in computer resources available to the inventor who wants to do his own patent searching, an updated version of this fine book is a welcome sight. Observe the dates on reviews of this book to see that those citing a need for an update are old and should be dismissed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One patent book that is worth the money
There are too many books about patents these days that are written by consultants (including lawyers-turned-consultants). Most of them are fluff that try to promote some new buzzword, like "intellectual capital management." There's nothing wrong with having a broad and managerial view about intellectual property, but unfortunately most such books are filled with useless consultant-style diagrams and vague notions such as that intellectual asset managers' duties include "sharing best practices", "leadership", and of course "career development for IAMs."
5-0 out of 5 stars Nice and friendly thinking about Patent
For most persons, patent or trademark, such verbs of IPR, are almost veryhard to be familiar with. However, after reading this book, I got used andinterested in reading related articles or jounals.Sometimes, I even enjoydiscussing such matters with others. What is more is it is surelypractical and useful for managers or business persons. With theprogressively trend of IPR, getting a opning book to enter this new worldis so critical and having no choice. However, we could be a littlefrustrated with some tricking or unfamiliar verbs while reading somerelated IPR writtings.Fortunately, I got this book and really enjoy it. I fully am sure to recommand this book for the above-mentioned reasons.Inaddition to me, most of the classmates in the university could enjoy it andfind much instriction or delighting in this book. From then on, we havestarted to research such knowledge.Even, I back to office-career now.Myboss have told me to read this book to improve self-knowledge to be a goodrole in our technology market. This book is just so fancy. And everyonewill be very enjoyed it with reading it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars General review about the same
The book is execellently drafted, edited. the intellectual property is an indespensable asset for any firm and the said assets needs protection from infringement and recognition not only in the domestic market but also in the international market. The trade mark, copyright and patent is the most worthiest intellectual property and runs the show of the company in this competitive market. Patent is granted to the product aswell as the process/method of product. the value of medicine are going to shoot up if the product is patentable. If the product of the foreign goods are patented than monopoly is created and in our country (India) where only the process is patentable and product is never patentable, if the foreign goods which are patentable comes in our economy than such goods will be expensive as no other similiar/identical goods of our country can sell such goods. It may create unneccessary concentration of economic power. Trade mark is granted to the mark, logo, symbol while copyright is granted to the exclusive work and patent to the invention. Said law of all the country should be in one line then and then intellectual property can be protected in one another country.I have not purchased the said book but i have gone through the same i feel very interesting and its very pragmatic and visionary for the coming days. The same was not available in our city (Ahmedabad) in the state of Gujarat INDIA. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction for Everyone in the Pharmaceutical Business
I read the Generic Challenge in one evening. It is easy to read, anecdotal and short (100 pages). My favorite portions of the book were Chapter 2 (pharmaceutical patenting strategy) and Chapter 7 (drug life-cycle management). It is hard to believe that so much information and seasoned advice is packed into this little book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on intersection of patents and drug regulation
The book is concise, witty, understandable by lay and law people alike, and helpful in understanding the difficulties that innovative drug companies face as well as how generics keep the innovators on their toes. Not designed as a treatise (thankfully), it is helpful for someone who wants a quick and readable overview of patents and drug laws and regulations in the U.S. and elsewhere, and how they affect the incentives to develop new drugs. This is well-suited for people who work at drug companies (whether innovator or generic) and among the professionals that serve those companies, not to mention politicians and others who make or influence policy, or anyone who wants to be informed about the facts and policies that underlie the "generic" debate that plays out in the press.

1-0 out of 5 stars Aleatory in form and content.
Pages 1-40 disclose some background information relating to patents. Here, the author is plainly uncomfortable with the topic. Pages 41-107 describe various regulations relating to FDA submissions. Here, the writing is somewhat more assured.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory primer
This book gives a short history of copyright, the reasonings behind it, its manifestation, implementation, and enforcement throughout the last 500 years with emphasis on the English-speaking world; i.e. England and now the US.It is written in a style accessible to those without legal training, and serves as a good introduction to this aspect of intellectual property. The book provides many useful pieces of information such as:
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the more important books of our time
"The Illustrated Story of Copyright" may be the most important book I read this year.It traces history back to duplicating the printed word, and covers presses, copiers, the Internet, and computers. Also covered is Fair Use and Patents. The book is written so that non-professionals and non-students can understand it, yet I believe that it would be an asset to any attorney's office or to any law curriculum.5-0 out of 5 stars Copyrights made easy

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good project templates... but seek out legal advice as well!
This is a well crafted introduction to business forms, proposals, estimate sheets, and contracts; and I'm impressed that there is finally a publication specifically for industrial designers. The only apprehension I have is in the patent/trademark/copyright section, where the DIY form approach might not be the best idea, and actual legal help will be essential. These documents are a very good foundation, but a book alone cannot (and is not intended to) guide you in customizing forms to your own process, clients, or property...The companion CD is a huge plus with this book as well! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for today's business world
What I found most helpful was that Einstein in the Boardroom featured multiple case studies around commercializing IP with a rare peek behind the scenes of how companies are doing business in this area today. For example, there is an entire chapter about the dramatic culture change that occurred at P&G that has led to the company being "open for business" through its Connect + Develop initiatives (which was recently featured in March's Harvard Business Review), willing to collaborate and work with other companies. The examples provided are tangible, leading edge, and relevant.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful practical advice from industry leaders
The authors have identified key elements missing from previous discussions of the general topic, and have performed a very useful state-of-the-art survey and synthesis of the practices of leading-edge companies that are seeking to extract value from their intangible assets.Though I'm not a big fan of their "I-stuff" terminology (it's a bit too "cutesy" for my pedestrian tastes), the authors have clearly identified the ways in which the more traditional terms "intellectual property" and "intellectual capital" are too narrow to capture what is at stake.

The topic of this book is incredible. Hard to beleive it's gone this far. It boggles the mind.
4-0 out of 5 stars Exposing copyright bullies
I've recently begun reading up on the subject of corporate efforts to take control of our culture,. While the material here may be familiar turf to many , it was eye opening to me. I had no idea that copyright law had been distorted and bent against the interests of those it was meant to serve: the public (for it's a bargain between the creator and the public, not simply a property right interest, as many people commonly assume).
5-0 out of 5 stars Take this book seriously
Take what this writer has to say seriously, All the branches of intellectual property law (copyright, patent and trademark) are in a dreadful mess, driven that way by the usual suspects--powerful interest groups and greedy lawyers. Heck, even the fact that I just used an expression from the 1942 movie, Casablanca, "usual suspects," could get me sued. Someone lost a copyright dispute because they used two wordsof business jargon someone else claimed to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, informative, funny-- what more can you ask for?
I was afraid when I picked up _The Biz_ that it was going to be a dry read-- legal aspects of any business are not known for being a scintillating read. However, I am happy to report that it was not only a quick and interesting read, it was a genuinely funny one. Moore had me laughing out loud on several occasions.
5-0 out of 5 stars How hot is "the Biz?"
One thing about Professor Moore: the man rides motorcycles and has more energy than a 6-year old. He's not the average UCLA professor.5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook for Entertainment Lawyers
Mr. Moore teaches at UCLA, and his course is extraordinarily well attended. His book is considered a must-have for lawyers working in Entertainment, and although the focus is law, I think it would be a handy reference for anyone new to the creative side of Entertainment, especiallythose seeking to protect themselves and their interests when making dealsand such. ...
