3-0 out of 5 stars Not too helpful
The title made buying the book interesting, but I was kind of disappointed when I purchased the book. For someone with a good quantitative background or some real experience dealing with real options and monte carlo simulation, this book would prove to be frustrating. It takes shortcuts by using (to the point of promoting) the Crystal Ball software by Decisioneering.Unfortunately, the book doesn't come with a trial software of Crystal Ball like some other real options books, so you only have to rely on the pictures in the book.Aside from this, the discussion of many topics is very watered-down.The author doesn't go in too much depth, and there is not much takeaway from this book.I suggest buying a different book for your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Results-Based Approach
While preparing for a negotiation the objective is to identify risks and rewards. The point of the negotiation is to capture value while finding terms value-enhancing to all parties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material - decent "entertain level"
I've listened to about 10 audio CD's for law school courses.Either the speaker is absolutely dry as hell (to the point where the CD's should be outlawed in the car for risk of falling asleep at the wheel) or the material covered is extremely sparse, out of date, or outright wrong. This is one of the best.Covers the most important topics, is presented logically, he goes into some intersting cases. The best is that the CD's are very well indexed, so you can easily jump to a section. (Unlike other CD's which are one friggin track, so you have to listen to the whole CD straight through.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not much sum, no substance
I have purchased dozens of books and CDs from Amazon, a few of which disappointed me, but none has ever motivated me to write a negative review... until now. This is the third Sum&Substance CD set I've purchased.I was thrilled with the first two, filled with informative and even gripping, eloquent prose by professors who knew their subject so well they could speak extemporaneously about it for hours. This one, however, is unlistenable.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR SCHECTER & THOMAS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
John THomas ( co-author of the superbe Schecter & Thomas - IP casebook/treatise ) has done an absolute masterful job on these CD's. One of the problems with an IP Overview course is that 1) the topic is vast & 2) it is usually presented in an illogical sequence ( for exam problem solving ). Here, Thomas presents the topics in a logical "problem analysis" flow. His discussions were incredibly succinct - like a laser. He encapsules 1 hour of classroom discussion - into mere minutes. Better, THomas's lectures track his book & he even uses the case squibs as discussion points & examples. He presents this material much like the old "Audio Text TOur" law series - which are now unfortunately out of print. I kicked ass on very challenging comprehensive 3 docrine final exam. I COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT THESE CDS!! I CANNOT RECOMMEND THESE CDS ENOUGH! - THANKS JOHN THOMAS !!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Non-Quantitiative & of Limited Value
For individuals actually interested in quantitative measurements of intellectual property value, this book is largely a waste of time. The text is full of a lot of business school "value creation" idealism and has little practical value in my opinion.Indeed, for those really interested in valuing intellectual property and intangible assets, see the associated book by Gordon V. Smith and Russell L. Parr. This text has everything you are looking for and this book is unnecessary.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good quick Introduction
This book has its good points and its bad points. The good thing is that it is very well written, concise and easy to read. It brings important points to light and is a good start at dealing with a large complex issue. The bad aspect is that the book tends to rely on the experience of the author in developing the models that are at the heart of the book, rather on validated and tested truths. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable introduction to IC Management
"In 1999, CEO Magazine and Arthur Andersen hosted a roundtable luncheon for CEOs interested in discussing intellectual capital (IC) and its impact on the firm as we know it. The luncheon drew 17 CEOsrepresenting both manufacturing and service industry companies. All wereintrigued by the potential hidden value that the intellectual capitalperspective suggests lies untapped within their businesses, but none knewwhat kinds of value they could obtain from their company's intangibleassets or how they might go about it. They just knew that there was hiddenvalue in their companies and that it was somehow wrapped up in thethoughts, skills, innovations, and abilities of their employees. Theywanted to learn more about this value: how to harness it, direct it, andextract value from it. This book is written for those CEOs and for anyoneelse who wants to know how to extract the hidden value that resides withinthe firm's intellectual capital. As of this writing dozens of firmsactively engage in extracting value from their IC. The people directing theactivities for these firms have formed a community(called the ICMGathering) to share their ideas and success stories. With the expectationof a very few proprietary bits of information that could be useful tocompetitors, these firms are willing to share their knowledge, and thisbook draws heavily on their experiences. The purpose of this book is tohelp businesses profit from one of their most important assets, theirintellectual capital" (from the Introduction pp.3-4).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is the Internet Doomed?
Yes, if principles outlined in this book are not heeded.Strangely, the fundamental economics of copyright intellectual property have been glossed over by many eBusinesses seeking to grab "eyeballs" instead of dollars. No wonder so many "content sites" are failing. The selection of articles in this book is first rate and should be read by anyone in the publishing, music or software businesses. There is some advanced economic analysis with a fair bit of math, but the articles are quite accessible to non-economists like myself. You have just read a review of a book.Is my review "worth" anything? What did it "cost?"Will all books eventually by digital? Read this book to find out. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars taken from Journal of Law, Economics & Policy Volume 1, Number 2 (Winter 2005)
"The knowledge which can be gained from the study of this text is found in the placement that Solove's topic has within the broader debate surrounding the role of knowledge in society.Solove's points chime in right around the time we recognize that computers have great potential for advancing the spread and use of productive information.Computers provide tools capable of tapping into dispersed knowledge; but, we must simultaneously recognize that they are not miracle cures to be implemented from central positions of authority. The knowledge which they coordinate is valuable only in so far that it is dispersed and subjective. The hazardous notions of knowledge, in the Hayekian sense, would be those which claim to be more complete and universally applicable than they actually are. When based upon such false notions, actions stand to be erroneous, misinformed, and the host to unintended consequences."

4-0 out of 5 stars good overview of DRM ideas
Van Tassel gives an overview of current DRM methods. At a level understandable by a non-engineer or programmer. She describes why DRM is so important to many media companies. Or, in fact, to any company that has assets in digital form. If you've never dealt with DRM, her book is a useful introduction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Make your agent read this...but you should read
This is a great resource for dealmaking, but most actors and writers that I know aren't negotiating their own deals. The trick is to get your agent to work harder at creating opportunities, so that they actually have deals to make. Yes, your agent should read this book ... but for myself, as an actor/writer the book HOW TO AGENT YOUR AGENT...is my bible. It helps me kick my agents in the butt ( without them knowing)and I get results...they're working harder and I'm getting work. Also I liked that book with all the casting directors pictures...just in case you see them in Starbucks and want to say hello.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME RESOURCE FOR ANY BUSINESS AFFAIRS EXEC!
Best book I ever bought dealing with the industry, bar none!I can't believe it's under $20!
