4-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, still one of the best references out there
Despite a boom in licensing and totally new markets exploding for licensed artwork and design (especially with opportunities for American and European artists, designers and industrial designers now working directly with Chinese manufacturers), this old tome is unfortunately still one of the better books available for the creative/businessperson. This subject desperately needs revising and updating... hello? Caryn R. Leland? We need you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Reader
Great introduction book for those wishing to enter the licensing market.very informative. Reviews and explains each paragraph and its significance in a Licensing Agreement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Copyright Is More Than Just About Profit
This book does not really explore aspects of copy protection beyond profit.Copy protection's original purpose was to protect others from taking your intellectual work and pretending to be theirs without giving the original authors any credit. So yes, copyright protection is indeed important, as it encourages creativity when implemented properly.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Defense of the Writing Style
I am writing this primarily to defend the style used by Dr. Vaidhyanathan in this book. The person who commented anonymously (as "a reader") suggested it was written at a second grade reading level. That was not a mistake.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Mess of Creativity and Ownership
This is an insightful though often quick and unfocused examination of the history of copyright law. Vaidhyanathan outlines the deceptively complicated realm of copyright law from its origins in medieval Europe to current issues with peer-to-peer networks and intellectual property. Through his sometimes creative use of legal precedents and historical trends, Vaidhyanathan reaches a few outstanding insights here, such as debunking the incorrect impression that the term "copyright" implies a right when it is actually a privilege; while modern crazes like hip-hop sampling and MP3 file sharing are not direct violations of copyright law but instead offer harsh illuminations of the gaps and inconsistencies in that law. Most importantly, the highly varied nuances and applications of copyright law in the past have been ruinously combined in recent years into the poorly defined, but disastrously applied, concept of intellectual property. Thus we have the modern corporatist view of everything as "property" that can be owned, bought, and sold, including ideas and expression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewel in the Crown of Technology Valuation Reference Books
Of all the technology valuation reference books I have read, this one is by far the best.Richard has compiled and condensed the most useful valuation techniques/methods into his book, and it's easy reading. However, if you're just looking for one tried and true, quick and dirty recipe to value all technologies in all markets and in all business conditions you'll be disappointed. Richard has provided an excellent collection of methods, however unlike many authors, he writes for the business professional and thus he requires the reader to use professional judgment, coupled with good business intelligence (information) to select and then apply the methodologies.Basically, there are rarely easy and simple answers when valuating technologies, however Richard's book makes it a heck of a lot easier and the results provide a more credible foundation for commencing valuation negotiations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Book for a Technical Subject
I enjoyed reading Dr. Razgaitis book on the Early -Stage Technologies. It covered the different basic approaches to valuation.I specifically liked his analysis of the 25% rule and the Monte Carlo method for valuations. These two methods are on opposite ends of the difficulty spectrum of valuations. The details mentioned in those two methods has allowed me to strengthen the valuation reports that we do at Inavisis, Inc.4-0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool

If you think peer-to-peer collaboration is the exclusive province of 21st-century computer nerds, this hefty anthology will open your eyes to its precedents among indigenous cultures and its growing offshoots in pursuits as lofty as genomics and as mundane as proofreading.

4-0 out of 5 stars IP in China, a primer
Andrew Mertha's book made my life harder. Deep in the writing of a paper on Chinese intellectual property, I received word that his book was available days before a deadline. That alone makes him a target of my ire. But ultimately, my research benefited from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An American vision
Intellectual property is a complex issue, and most books on the subject deals mostly on the legal practice or economic aspects of the matter. This academic-intended volume has virtually all basic texts needed to understand the core problems of the subject, and is a precious help to serious students and researchers. A treatment of the International problems related to the matter and some further discussion of the crucial theme of public domain would be recommended in a future edition. But, alas, it is a precious work, and I have included it and the basic bibliography of my graduate IP courses in Brazil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ars eligendi
The book edited by Profs. Merges and Ginsburg is, without being rethoric, simply an extraordinary reading, a powerful and very enjoyable tool that is to help all of us in addressing and discovering the most important literature on U.S. Intellectual Property in the best way. References on economic/market issues concerning copyright and digital technology are abundant and thought-provoking as well as the reported (and still open!) debate about the appropriateness of current patent, trademark and industrial design protection. I'm sure that everyone interested in improving his or her understanding on the complex world of IP may greatly benefit from the readings such a powerful guide provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stereotype buster about women for both gender in academia
I read this wonderful book quite some time ago and was so moved by all the info that i wrote an article on forgotten women of history for a community magazine (with examples from ancient Egypt, India and China. Wish growing up I knew all the great discoveries and inventions women did and are doing even today and not getting the recognition they deserve. [...]
5-0 out of 5 stars Uncovers unrecognized achievements of women
Many inventions and achievements attributed to men actually were first made by a woman! Some of the inventions and achievements profiled in this book I was aware of, but many were surprises. Men and women both would benefit from reading this book: Women-to see what women have achieved and as models for what is possible and men- for a wake-up as to the achievements and capabilities of women. Fortunately women are more likely to be recognized now for their achievements, but we still have a long way to go. When I authored a book on small businesses, I encountered many instances where women did not receive credit for their contributions which were often greater than the men in their business. This book is educational and inspirational. Give this book to a woman you want to inspire!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and little known contributions by women
The book can be read as an entity or read randomly as time allows because each inventor has a brief self-contained section in the larger chapters. The book is well-written and it is not an academic punishment to read. There is enough detail to set the reader into further research but it is light enough to provide information in an enjoyable way. The inventors often have insightful quotes. It should be required reading in schools to encourage more participation in science, math, computers and intellectual curiosity in general.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine for Survey Course
The previous review suggests that the casebook is not a good choice for someone wanting to focus in greater detail on patent prosecution or litigation. I imagine this is intended for use in a survey course, and think it's fine. It certainly does not teach the MPEP or prepare someone to take the patent bar, but that is not its purpose; I used the PatBar course for that. As far as patent litigation, I won't a course in that until next semester, but I believe this casebook did a nice job in surveying the important principles in litigation.

3-0 out of 5 stars standard casebook, no real fireworks!
This casebook contained all the usual cases that are typical in a patent law/intellectual property casebook. Unfortunately, there should have been more content which described the patent process as well as the patent prosecution procedure in order to allow the reader to fit the case law into the appropriate scheme of things. ...
