3-0 out of 5 stars A good start for analytical jurisprudence, but no more
Hart takes apart the legal positivism of Austin and acknowledges some validity in natural law theory. But Hart fails to connect the "minimum content of natural law" with his analysis of a "rule of recongition" that allows a legal system to exist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Obligatory reading.
One of the highest achievements in the history of jurisprudence. Simple to read, complex to thoroughly grasp, written in clear prose but full of ideas. Previous familiarity with Kelsen and Austin should prove helpful to extract the most out of this book. You can follow it by reading Dworkin and Bobbio (sadly unavailable in English - his Teoria della norma giuridica and Teoria dell'ordenamento giuridico are as obligatory as Kelsen and Hart).5-0 out of 5 stars a seminal text on legal philosophy and jurisprudence
One of the most important books written in the field of jurisprudence and legal philosophy.A must-read for anyone who wants to talk intelligently about the topic. Each of Dr. Hart's chapters has been the springboard for entire areas of discussion since its publication, such as law as a system of rules, the separation of law and morality, etc. After you finish this book, read Prof. Dworkin's critique in "The Model of Rules," 35 Univ.Chi.L.Rev. 14 (1967) (excerpted in "The Philosophy of Law") and Prof. Dworkin's "Taking Rights Seriously" to see how Hart's theories have affect jurisprudential scholarship since the publication of this text in 1961.Again, if one had to select the top thinkers in the field, it's Austin, Hart, and Dworkin. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst E&E Book Out There
This is easily the worst book in the E&E series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but the worst of the series
I've read 11 or so of the Examples and Explanations books while in Law School. For the most part, the series is great. The material is broken down into sections that make sense and the important points are made and remade with the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every teacher.
This book covers school law in a clear and concise manner. The language is easily understood and should be on the desk of every teacher who is concerned about the welfare of children.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book about school law.
I like this book very much because as the book says, it summarizes school law in a nutshell.I have found it very helpful to refer to while taking a school law class. It is any easy read compared to my school law text, and hits the main points of court decisions. ... Read more

I had Dr. Lyman in a class and I think he wrote a good book. He is detailed and provided me with alot of information. If you are into organized crime, not just mafia, get this book - it is a good resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction
This book is a good introduction to a difficult topic. The authors don't focus on just the traditional "Costra Nostra" topics that many authors fall prey too.The authors carefully blend National andInternational Organized Crime (OC)Groups, Theories of OC and methods forcontroling the spread and growth of the groups.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Reader-Friendly Casebook
This is a very good casebook on the law of war.The readings are up-to-date, the notes are astute, and the mix of law, history and policy is illuminating. Professor O'Connell presents all sides of the many controversies that roil this field, reprinting, for example, two contrasting legal opinions on NATO's bombing of a TV station in Serbia. She even includes representative near-gibberish such as the State Department Legal Advisor's attempt to justify the Panama invasion as an act of self-defense -- which may have been included to warn students about the ethical/intellectual perils of public service.(I work for the State Department.)Perhaps best of all, the length of the book is manageable -- law students weary of 1,000-page casebooks filled with small print will appreciate O'Connell's reader-friendly (and readable) approach. Overall, it's a neat book.Even non-lawyers and non-law students will get a lot out of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good effort
I just finished reading "Black's Law Dictionary," and I must say I disagree with many of the reviews on this board. I thought the story was fairly uninteresting and the characters one-dimensional. It started strong (the "animus capiendi" scene comes to mind) but it dragged in the middle and ended flat (too much time spent on the "year-and-a-day rule"). I will admit I thoroughly enjoyed the list of British Regnal Years in Appendix G. Good effort by the author, the up-and-coming Black, but just two stars from this reviewer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I have used this dictionary for many years while I worked in a law firm in Argentina with relationships with multinatinal companies. Now that I am practising on my own I needed this book for the correct use of English legal term in my contact with internatinal clients. Great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Current law student
I was not very impressed with this book. This is even more true as I continue my legal education. The advice for those thinking of going to law school seemed like common sense. Some of the 1L information was good but a lot does not really apply unless you are going to a school similar to those the 'mentors' attended.Other items that they say will help you get ahead just seem like shortcuts that will probably burn you in the long run.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beacon in the darkness
Law School Confidential is a must read for anyone considering law school. It's very helpful when you get there, too. The book is a beacon in the darkness of the first days of class. I consult it on a regular basis.

3-0 out of 5 stars average
This book contained a few moderately useful lists, but for the most part contained little of particular value. It is too superficial to be of much use to a large firm merger, and bears little relevancy to the needs of a small firm merger. The most useful part of the book is not the book itself, but the accompanying forms disk, which can help provide a little structure to your thinking when evaluating and planning a law firm merger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too short and superficial
Too short and over priced.I bought this book in March 2005 for the list price, now that the price is reduced, it might be a better deal.Still expensive for a paperback of only 208 pages, almost half checklists and exhibits. It is authored by Hildebrandt International, which provides consulting advice to merging law firms.I felt I was reading a promotional brochure for the consulting service. There is some useful insight but at a common-sense level, not so much that is penetrating insight.Obscure topic, so if you want information you might have limited choices, hence my purchase.Another book (not purchased by this reviewer) Law Firm Mergers : Taking a Strategic Approach is also by Hildebrandt; why do they have two books on the same topic? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Contracts in a Nutshell
Thank you so much for a nutshell version of contracts! It's all beginning to make sense now!I believe this book was key in helping me to pass this, not so much fun, class!

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life!!!
Some time around mid-semester, I was hopelessly lost and confused in my contracts last. In my despair, I bought this book. It opened up my eyes and lifted the fog of contracts for me. My final grade in the class was much better than I hoped for and I have to partly thank this book for that. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that it is useful for bare bones knowledge of contracts, and shouldn't be used to replace attending class and taking good notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This book is as simple as it gets. Contract law is one of the more complex subjects in law school. Any material that adds complexity to an already challenging subject has little value especially to 1L's and even bar candidates. Understanding the basics of the subject is crucial. That is why this book stands out from the rest. I have read the casebook, a hornbook in this jurisdiction as well as various textbooks in a foreign jurisdiction. "Contracts in a Nutshell" gives the simplest explanation of the law by far. It is a must read indeed! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Warning! Portions out of Date
I am generally quite a fan of the Examples and Explanations series and this is generally true of PR. The book provides a good overview of the various topics, including a integration of appropriate concepts from the Federal Rules, common law, the Model Rules and the Model Code. In terms of overall concept-based teaching, the book does a fine job.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep for the MPRE!
I took the MPRE in NY (where the minimum passing score is 85) without having taken a course in Professional Responsibility either through law school or one of the bar-prep companies. I read this book once, took a practice examination available at the MPRE website, and scored 108. As with most of the Aspen E&E series books, this is a great introduction to an area of the law that you have to know. It is easy to ready, and works well for MPRE preparation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good, but the only thing out there
This book, like most of the other nutshells I've read, is not particularly helpful. The organization is confusing, and not enough attention is devoted to major topics, as the format is primarily just a recitation of cases. A study guide is supposed to provide a concise synopsis of the law, not merely throw a bunch of conflicting cases at the reader. Steven Emanuel has the market for law school study aides cornered, with the Examples & Explanations series a distant second. Unfortunately, this is the only major study guide that exists for employment law. Thanks to Rothstein's worthless and maddening casebook, learning employment law is neither interesting nor fun. This nutshell will provide some relief, but not much.

1-0 out of 5 stars did you read the footnotes?
Having never actually subjected the book to scrutiny, albeit rather an exageration, it comes as no little surprise that i discover both the writing style and the general cognitive processes of the authors, in addition to the lack of well-placed commas, to be, without equivocation n.1, the most obtuse, murky, singularly unreaable n.2 display of textual acrobatics i have ever, whether in or out of school n.3, had the distinct displeasure of having to plod through in one day - notwithstanding a few notable books i've also had to accept into my overstuffed head, lately.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well . . .
Well, Judge Posner calls this (in its first edition) the greatest casebook, and surely it is that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard class, horrible book
Federal Courts and Federal Jurisdiction is generally recognized as the hardest course in law school. After surviving the course myself, I can attest to this fact.Unfortunately, my course used this text which was useless in imparting an understanding of the material, and in fact did more to confuse my peers and me than anything else.Learning this material is already difficult enough, so it is extremely unhelpful when your text makes the subject even more mystifying.Read more
