5-0 out of 5 stars A bright light in the fight for effective autism treatment!
Parents of children who are affected by autism spectrum disorders are well aware of the need to serve as effective advocates for the rights of their children. Imagine the battle that needs to be waged when an entire government fights to withhold funding for the only empirically validated intervention for autism, applied behavior analysis (ABA). Freeman describes the events that occur when a lawsuit is brought about by a group of parents against the government of British Columbia. The lawsuit argues for funding for "Lovaas-style" ABA therapy. In an attempt to block the funding of ABA therapy, the government of British Columbia attempts to discredit Lovaas and ABA through a combination of distortions, selective reporting of the research literature, and questionable ethical practices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Do not miss this...
Every parent of every child with autism should read this book. It will open your eyes to the way governments use taxpayer dollars to cheat children out of the medical treatment they so vitally need...and it will prepare you for the fight for your own children's rights. Do NOT miss this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars an essential read
Another essential read from Sabrina Freeman.Any parent or advocate fighting for the necessary treatment for people with autistic-spectrum disorders must get a copy of this book.It is frightening to see how easily the science can be misquoted and misused in the effort by some to avoiding paying for scientifically-validated treatment. When you have to prepare yourself for the fight, this a resource you must have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A long-overdue legal reference book
Dr. Wear-Finkle has succeeded in creating an extremely well-written, comprehensive reference book of a generally unfamiliar and very intimidating subject to most clinicians. Her approach is impressive in both its clarity and organization. While it is an easy read, it goes beyond a "...for Dummies" approach. This excellent reference is worth the time investment to read in its entirety. After reading it, a physician has a greater respect, and less unfounded fear, of lawsuits. Dr. Wear-Finkle provides simple, common sense, and some not-so-obvious tips on avoiding litigation, as well as sound advice on what to do when litigation occurs. It is appropriate addition to any clinician's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tongue and cheek approach
A wonderful tongue and cheek approach to what is to often an after thought in the world of medicine.Whether you're a practitioner or an administrator you'll find this humorous little book a priceless guide to avoiding the day-to-day gauntlet of potentially disastrous medico legal risks.Wear-Finkle has crafted a tremendous quick read resource that will be invaluable tool for the beginner or even the most seasoned veteran of the healthcare field.A must buy!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful
Although Bruce J. Winick does not include a preface in THE RIGHT TO REFUSE MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT, it is obvious that the appropriate audience for this book includes judges, lawyers (both defense and plaintiff), psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and counselors. THE RIGHT TO REFUSE MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT can be best described as a comprehensive assessment of the decision making process regarding involuntary clients, patients and, of course, prisoners. With 20 chapters divided into three sections, it offers a significant contribution both to law and to clinical mental health intervention. The sections include:Read more

The text is somewhat dated both in terms of law and clinical practices.Lawyes will find the text narrow in scope, but it can be useful as a guide as to where to begin looking and understanding the legal doctirnes.Clinicians will find the text lacking in detail. The text is only an overview, with not enough specific depth of coverage to act as a refernece for the clinician nor the lawyer.Useful for beginners just starting out in their clinical practices. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Circuit Courts Get Their A-- Kicked Finally!!!!
The reality of the abuse of the ADA by our Federal Circuit Courts as it pertains to persons with documented grave mental conditions is finally brought to light in this well-written book by Susan Stefan. To think that a mentally ill worker has to prove that he is disabled (severely) but can do the job with little or no accommodations and is totally mitigated by medications to the point of being non-disabled is absolute foolishness by the current Federal Circuits. They claim to be under the responsibility of judging litigation on a case by case basis, yet have continued to make qualified mentally ill workers dance on prongs so small that Tinkerbell would surely fall! Ms Stefan SHOWS the disparity demonstrated by the Circuit Courts when dealing with mental disabilities and highlights the absolute redundancies in case law when dealing with bipolar illness or any other mental disability. The 5TH Circuit will soon get a case that they will be FORCED to be just...fair and equal under our laws...as my personal situation exceeds their favorite word "egregious". Let's all hope that the spirit of the ADA does not get trashed in political correctness and absurd logic...and the 5TH Circuit shows guts in recognizing the obvious fact that mental illness is equal to physical illness in disabling an individual in the work place. That the mentally ill need not be forced to endure harassment and disparate treatment at the workplace and employers are given a clear mandate to treat the mentally ill fairly and equally at the workplace. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Conundrum
Dr. Nurcombe has presented a compassionate, well-thought-out review of the relationship between mental health and the legal system. These two are often at odds with each other, though the ultimate aim is of course to protect both the patient and the public from his/her illness.I have worked with Dr. Nurcombe in Burlington, Vermont USA on the Vermont Infant Studies Project, and am aware of his sensitivity and kind heart. These qualities are evident in all of his work, and though I have not read other books to compare with this one, I found it most rewarding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mental Health is only Emotional Health
While we consider this little, the reality is that among the types of health, physical, economic, intellectual, and emotional or psychological, mental health is actually little more than psychological and emotional health. Where men deny their emotions, therefore, it is often conclusory that women are the ones upon whom mental health has been focused, leaving men once again in the desert of health issues. Where women regularly evoke their emotional needs, men seldom do, and society places numerous substitutes to deter, or defer, the issues that come automatically from being human, as if men were robots. Since men spend so much of their lives at work, this necessarily invokes the issues of healthful working environments that properly and appropriately honor the emotional lives of men, and do not treat them as robotic. Astute lawyers will begin to increasingly define the importance of mental health in work and employment issues as they have been forced to do for women (coming into the workplace with all of their emotional clothing). Having long denied males the same privilege, the integration of men and women in the workplace has the potential to overload the human resources department responsible for insuring the collateral issues that confront employees to insure productivity for the employer, and contented employees. Far from being "girlie men," the normal acceptance of human qualties is long overdue for men, and any company of social responsibility will jump at the chance to prove its image of "valuable work climates" for both men and women. This blossoming field of context in connection with both home and work environments, and the nexus of child raising must necessarily become the next giant step for corporations to address their corporate climate as worthy employers. Far from the hierarchial vision of the industrial complex, the 21st Century workplace that incorporates both men and women in positions of responsibility is advised to insure both physical health and mental health for its employees, as well as trying to handle the enormous task of diversity issue that have become one test of humanitarian excellence in a world increasingly complex and interdependent. For companies who ignore this vast area of health issues, they will continue to become the lumbering dinosaurs they must be in an integrated gender world where master/servant relationships and law have ignored the importance of human emotions as mental health. Correctly defining the existence of the whole human being was bound to come sooner or later. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Non-Specialist Reader
Daniel N. Robinson's Wild Beasts and Idle Humours (The Insanity Defense from Antiquity to the Present) sounds and looks more fun than it actually will be for the average reader without a sure grounding in legal, philosophical and psychological theory and history. The author does indeed cover the period from antiquity to the present, as per the sub-title, and provides many interesting ideas along the way, taking a rather conservative approach, but there are also many cases and people just dropped into the book without any explanation on the assumption that the reader will be familiar with all of these legal cases and philosophers from the past two centuries.A grounding in classical and medieval history (with luck I did have that) will help the reader manage the first part of the book. For students of legal history, this book could prove quite interesting and, perhaps, invaluable as the author makes a clever attempt to bring ideas of insanity as far back as the writings of Homer and Hesiod. For this poor soul, the book was a struggle with a few rewards along the way. ...
