3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for intro class
I suppose the most important question is why are you interested in this book.It would make a good textbook for an intro type class in this area or would be good for someone who doesn't know DNA analysis, but is involved in criminalistics. The level of detail is insufficient for anyone who actually understands the molecular approaches. It spends a fair bit of time talking about cases and HOW this particular approach was once useful. These are interesting little stories, but the book really didn't give me what I wanted.I have a background in molecular genetics and was interested in making a career shift to DNA forensics. There was little of value for me because it never really got to the details.I think it would be good for a class because it provides historical perspective on the now outdated techniques that would be important background for someone who never knew anything about the development of the previous techniques and only learned what is current today, but to someone who has that background...seemed like it just added a new chapter to an otherwise outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for the beginner
Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself.Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR.A word of caution to the amateur, however:make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence."My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA.It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

3-0 out of 5 stars vivid introduction to forensic genotyping techniques
Nice figures, photos, schemes, and U.S. tables; lively comparisons show that authors are good teachers. Though technical part of the book outdates fast necessarily (acronym SNP has not been coined in 1996 yet), it is a shame that an interpretation part of the book neglects the current knowledge. Bayes theorem is known since 1763 and, nevertheless, likelihood ratio is not even mentined in the book! Books of Evett and Weir or of Robertson and Vignaux cannot be substituted by this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful guide
During the extreme stress of preparing for a deposition,my lawyers prepared me for the facts, but not the technique. The examples and philosophy and clarity of writing in this book were INVALUABLE to me.I also found it to be helpfully in dealing with the tremendous emotional impact of the litigation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and readable
As an attorney who has represented clients on both sides of the proverbial isle, I plan to have my clients read this book before any deposition.Dr. Uribe sucessfully demisifies this process for the non-lawyer and makes it understandable to those who do not think like us.I believe this book gives several useful tools to help those not trained in the law navagate a difficult and stressful experience.Excellent work!

1-0 out of 5 stars Outright ripoff

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant & Useful Tool
Adverse Events, Stress & Litigation, A Physician's Guide, is the latest contribution by a pair of professionals who have spent the last three decades shedding light on a previously unmentioned subject.Sara Charles, MD and Paul Frisch, JD partnered to provide the most comprehensive and thoughtful review of this complex topic. This book explores adverse events and provides practical tips on how to disclose unexpected occurrences to the patient and/or family. The authors skillfully corroborated to provide the reader with a clear understanding of the litigation process.Numerous caveats are included that will assist defendants as they deal with the demands of litigation. To further add to this well-written text, numerous poignant case vignettes are provided.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pertinent and Substantive!
Adverse Events, Stress and Litigation: A Physician's Guide was recommended to me by my daughter in pre-med. As an emergency physician with 30 years of experience in healthcare, I found this book a welcome addition to my continuing medical education. The authors provide an in depth synopsis of a topic which is fraught with anxiety for all physicians, medical malpractice. The book's unique strength lies in both content and format, setting it apart from other literature on the same topic. What it is NOT, is a sterile, didactic review on medical litigation.Rather, it walks the reader through the mine field of a claim or suit.It shines a light through the fog that is the legal process (and the associated attorney jargon) inherent in this stressful situation.Further, it provides the reader with tools to successfully navigate the system. Real life examples are integrated throughout, adding interest and even comfort.Every physician and physician-to-be should include this in their mandatory reading. I was surprised to find hope and solace in a book that is thoroughly informative and relevant. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evocative, exceptional, and enlightening!
As a pre-med student I found this book incredibly informative. It provides a balanced and unique perspective on a very important issue. The use of real life situations makes the book both poignant and approachable to the lay person or professional.Every pre-medical, medical student and resident should read this book in preparation for their career. It adds depth and scope to ones understanding of the importance of patient safety, quality of care, and risk management. This book not only can help one avoid liability but can also provide a guide through the difficult and often foreign legal system surrounding medical malpractice. ... I like this book. It is very informative, comprehensive and well-researched. The manner of presentation is well-organized, the language is easy to understand. The information, relevant to the current issues of this decade and past history. This is a very good reference for those who are taking health care infrastructure, especially nurses; or for those who want to learn the history, evolution and course of health care in U.S.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the honest physician/medical student.
As a current medical student and son of a malpractice lawyer, I found this book intriguing and insightful. His cocnlusions are sound and based on reputable studies conducted by MEDICAL SCHOOLS and PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS with strong ties to healthcare (such as the New England Journal of Medicine). He in no way attacks physicians as a whole. In fact, he devotes a good portion of the book entirely to reform that would PROTECT physicians. His book represents an easy-to-read, fair treatment of malpractice in healthcare. For the open-minded and honest physician/medical student, this book will help you rise above the malpractice myth that is almost universally held by physicians/medical students and completely contested by malpractice attorneys.Very objective and data centered.

1-0 out of 5 stars lawsuits do not prevent anything
As a physician, I completely disagree with this the author of this book. In fact, how can an insurance professor comment on the complex world of medicinal practice? Lawsuits do not prevent mistakes. On the contrary, they invite mistakes by forcing physicians to order more tests, and be unnecessarily agressive in working up any symptom. If I have a kidney patient whose potassium is on the high side, in fear of lawsuit, I may be more aressive and admit them to the hospital, order EKG and other tests and cost thousands of dollars, or in the ideal world, just change some medicines and follow as an outpatient, which costs a fraction of hospital admission.
5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and enlightning
As a personal injury attorney for the past 34 years I was delighted and relieved to read Tom Baker's The Medical Malpractice Myth. The fact that there is no Medical Malpractice litigation crisis was not news to me, nor was the fact that there is a substantive malpractice crisis - although I was not aware of its extent.

this book is very poor. do not purchase. I am an intern pharmacist and it is in no way applicable to the practice of pharmacy. Having used this book, I have no better understanding of pharmacy law. I recommend the Weisman text for CA law, as it is a better book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps to "Appreciate the Complexity" : Law is not a DIY,
This is a compilation of topics by a large number of health care lawyers. Each section is "peer reviewed" by another attorney for accuracy. Definitely not a "How To Do it Yourself" book. In fact this is the chief message of the book: doctors tend to be overconfident of our skill, and health care law is a complex field in which even general practice attorneys often stumble. Just as we should not operate onourselves, weshould not assume expertise in corporate organization, asset protection, labor or contracting.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very little substance
This book contains many topics important to physicians. However the substance for each topic is minimal. It does give some helpful tips for dealing with each topic it covers, but will certainly not be good as a sole reference on any of the topics. The question and answer format is difficult for me to follow.I would recommend getting books specific to the topics you need, as you would likely get more for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and helpful
Clinicians in Court is a clearly written, practical guide for therapists who find themselves drawn into the legal system. It provides a map for clinicians navigating the potentially risky terrain of the courts. The book cuts to the chase and provides much needed "how to" info in a manner that is very accessable to those who never intended to spend their time testifying in court, but find themselves in that position.
