5-0 out of 5 stars unplugged: reclaiming our right to die in america
unplugged delves into timely and essential subject matter with an entertaining, informative, wondrful style of writing.colby's insight to this pertinent topic is beneficial universally, as we all must confront these circumstances at some point in our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The right-to-die debate is once again tackled
The right-to-die debate is once again tackled; this time by a lawyer who represented Nancy Cruzan in the first right- to-die case heard by the Supreme Court. While Nancy Cruzan's struggles were chronicled in a prior book by Colby, Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right To Die In America offers a broader perspective on the topic, moving beyond Cruzan's struggle to offer answers to legal, ethical, medical and personal issues involved in the debate. Court records, interviews and the authors' own experiences lend to the discussion of current laws, proposed changes, and their effects on society.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Everyone
"Unplugged" is a book everyone who is going to die should read.It tells you what you need to do to make sure your wishes are respected when it comes to end-of-life decisions.Doing that will spare your loved ones unnecessary anguish. This book, believe it or not, is an engaging page turner and my 90-year-old mother just read it.We took its advice, talked about her wishes, and she now has a notarized health care power-of-attorney, giving us both much peace of mind. All this thanks to Colby's wonderfully written, timely, important book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Law in Medicine
Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances. It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization. He has taken a topic thatit difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading.Studentswill find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information for those new to health care law.
This book was very useful to me. I am a health information management student planning to enter a graduate health administration program. I took the class and this particular book was the text. Our instructor is a lawyerand runs risk management at our university hospital. The text furtherexplained basic legal priciples and related them to health care. The textis easy to read and gives several references to actual documents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read, for Nurse Practitioners & students
Great book which provides definitions and state-by-state breakdowns of important concepts, such as collaboration, prescriptive authority and SCAs.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd edition
I found Carolyn Buppert's second edition of Business Practice and Legal Guide to be very helpful. The additional chapters are useful for my practice and for research on a state wide level. I would recommend this book to nurse practitioners and students of the profession. It is proving to be a valuable resource for improving NP practice in Alabama. Be sure to get the second edition (2003/2004)as the first was published in 1995.

1-0 out of 5 stars Information is outdated
As a grad student interested in starting my own practice upon graduation, I found this book to be useless. It has been reprinted by another publishing company and its original copyright date is 1999. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Earth to the Expert Witness
I'm farily judicious relative to giving a product 5 stars when providing reviews however, HOW TO EXCEL DURING DEPOSITIONS (HTEDD), is incredibly deserving. While this is certainly a niche book and one very few in the Amazon world will read, for those few who are professionals, whether in the litigation consulting arena or not, this text provides an over-the-top treatise on the right and wrong ways of providing testimony under deposition. Further, regardless desire, chances are that many professionals will be called upon to give a deposition at some point in their professional careers given the litigous society in which we live. HTEDD is a small investment that will pay off in spades.5-0 out of 5 stars How to Excel During Depositions
This book touts itself to be an excellent resource, and it is. It is a follow up to a previous legal resource book entitled How to Excel During Cross-Examination. The authors discuss numerous subjects that are germaneto expert witnesses. Subjects included in this book range from answeringquestions correctly to how to set your fee schedule. In addition toproviding helpful information on the aspects of the expert witnessprofession, the authors have included a deposition checklist, 150 examplesof questions and answers from depositions, and select Federal Rules ofCivil Procedure. It is a must for the beginner as well as the establishedexpert witness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for all LNCs regardless of business experience
Betty and John Joos have created THE BEST marketing book for Legal Nurse Consultants ever written! The book is an easy read packed with real-life answers to real-life marketing questions. It is a practical approach to what really works, coupled with humor.Unbeknownst to them, they have become my business partners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every LNC should have this book!!
Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant is the most valuable book in my library! The Joos' walk LNCs through the world of marketing with ease.I've been lucky enough to have met these fine people in person and attended their marketing seminars. Here again, this is a "must do" for the independent legal nurse consultant. My cards and brochures went through major overhauls with their help and my business has prospered!Thank you both, John and Betty, for all you do!I'm looking forward to purchasing your next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Answers to your LNC marketing questions
All the accolades that have been written about the Joos' book are true! This little jewel of a book is one I know I will keep referring back to in the years to come. The marketing plan and suggestions are aimed specifically at legal nurses which makes everything in this book usable and practical. "Marketing for the LNC" is an invaluable source of information not only for nurses at the early stages of setting up a new consulting business but also for those that have been at it for awhile and are wanting to expand. Betty writes as one who has an understanding of the fears that most nurses experience who are marketing themselves for the first time. This is one of those "must have" books for "newbies" and seasoned LNC's. It explains what is needed to promote yourself and explains how to effectively do so in a professional manner without spending a small fortune. After reading this book, marketing started to feel like less of a necessary evil; although it's still not my favorite way to spend my non-billable hours....I now have a much clearer idea of the message I want to send to my prospective attorney-clients and I have the tools to help me get my message across. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Detecting Lies & Deceipt
I found this book to the most informative and useful reference of all those I have read regarding the subject and techniques relating to detecting deception by means of statement analysis in it's various forms. Easy to read. Easy to understand. It will remain a guide to forensic investigators, polygraphists and the like for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of psychological literature on deception
This is an extraordinary book, a well-written and clear survey of the psychological literature on deception written by one of the leaders in the field.Extremely thorough, and although sophisticated enough for professionals it is nevertheless useful for students and non-psychologists.As a lawyer and academic who writes on psychology and the law, I found it enormously helpful in preparing an article on the admissibility of expert testimony on lie-detection techniques.Having written on the subject before, and being more adept at legal rather than psychological research, I was thrilled to find such a clear and thorough collection of sources and commentary on the myriad social science research on lie-detection, and have already used the book's index to locate and look up numerous studies with which I was previously unfamiliar.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK ON THE PSYCHOLOGY OF LIE DETECTION

4-0 out of 5 stars useful book on current healthcare economics

3-0 out of 5 stars Tort Reform Ignored
While I found Dr Cutler's analysis penetrating, I was disappointed that he did not discuss in any detail the large impact on medical costs of medical malpractice lawsuits. Not only do these lawsuits increase malpractice insurance premiums of physicians and health insurance premiums of patients, they lead to wasteful defensive medicine, as physicians do unnecessary tests and procedures in order to reduce the risk of malpractice suits. Tort reform is essential to control rising medical costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars compelling approach to fix the broken American health system
Forty million Americans lack health care insurance and costs leap three and four times the inflation rate yet few Americans feel the system provides adequate care.Harvard economics professor and health-care expert Dr. David M. Cutler believes that the problem lies with the inability for most people to understand opportunity costs based on choices that may not lead to an improved life quality. The government and medical leadership exacerbate the problem with saving money as their solution, ignoring effectiveness. He makes a strong case on how much health care has dramatically improved over the past five decades as dramatized by longer productive life spans.Dr. Cutler believes that more money should be spent on further medical advances and that universal coverage for all needs should be implemented so that the present day uninsured can afford care rather than drain at a more costly rate the system. The key is to change from a system that economically encourages doctors to choose techniques that are not always the best for the patient factoring in cost and life quality to a system that reimburses doctors for quality service (not as hard as it first sounds).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The committee approach
This is a book which, despite being written by a committee and showing it, has a definite point of view.It is somewhat superficial, but contains a fairly good review of the literature on medical error and some definiteideas about what to do.This is the book for policy wonks who areinterested both in health care and in government intervention.Thoselooking for more in-depth treatment of the subject would do well toconsider Human Error in Medicine, edited by Marilyn Sue Bogner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book
This eye opening book exposes the dangers of the medical health care system in the United States.Tens of thousands of people die and are injured every year due to doctors' errors, administrative foul ups, misdiagnoses, and incorrect prescriptions. The book gives generalsolutions for the system as a whole and advice to the individual to helpyou protect yourself when you are being treated by a doctor orhospital.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Markets : The Supply and Demand of Body Parts
This is very interesting reading.Being an avid reader, I am always browsing through books looking for something knowledgeable and different from my usual relationship topics. This caught my attention and I could not put it down.I would never expect a book of this nature to do that. This author did a fantastically wonderful job of shining light on a subject that is very important and does not receive attention.More importantly, it is written in a way that would engage the average person.Great job !!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely and Honest
I am incredibly impressed with this author.I participated in a conference hosted by her law school this past weekend. It was outstanding! She read from the book and the room was in complete silence. She is a brilliant author and professor. This is one of the few books written by a bioethicist that speaks to the public.I congratulate the author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Better Book By Far
This is a better book by far than the unfortunately better known INTERNAL BLEEDING.It is certainly more honest. It has the clear advantage of being written by people who know and understand the subject ,and unlike Internal Bleeding, it does not suffer the disadvantage of having been written by physicians who, purposfully or otherwise, seem very intent in obscuring the responsibility for medical mistakes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truth be told
This book is a well researched, well written must read for all Americans. The authors share their personal story as well as the stories of others who have suffered at the hands of a careless physician. While the stories will break your heart, they may also save your life, or the life of someone you love. While none of us want to believe that those we trust with our bodies and our lives would neglect a sacred trust, the fact is it is happening all too often. This book delivers the message without hype, fear or hysteria.Read it, share it and take it with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars First do no harm
If even one person dies, that is one too many. But it is not just one, not even 10 or 100 patients who are maimed and dying from health care mistakes. As Gibson and Singh reveal, the numbers are much much higher than that. And anyone of them could be you or your loved ones. Medical errors do not discriminate. Everyone is vulnerable even doctors themselves as patients. Read more
