2-0 out of 5 stars Prostration at medical litigation-on-demand
This book is a thinly-veiled attempt to defend the status quoof litigation-on-demand - "better the devil you know than the oneyou don't." Essentially, it advises physicians to accept the system and conform to the rigors of legal imposition when caught in the net of a medical lawsuit. It defends contingency fees, the system which allows the attorney-litigators to keep as much as 40% of the malpractice award and in the end leaves the injured plaintiffs with only 20-30% of the original award. Contingency billing is something which is unethical for physicians, and erstwhile was frowned upon by the legal profession. Today it is the rule for big-bucks litigation. The book also defends the obfuscation of collateral sources which allows for double and triple-dipping by injured plaintiffs.4-0 out of 5 stars good basic review
This book, written by a judge and a urologist, is a good basic review of the judicial system as it may be encountered by a physician. It is divided into two parts, first the doctor as defendant. Each chapter deals with adifferent aspect of the process of a lawsuit. The best being the third, asuit is not a shroud. The second half of the book deals with doctors asexpert witnesses. This book is a good introduction to the legal processand would be of most benefit to medical students and residents. The onedown side is it is not more case oriented with specific examples.Thewriting is clear, concise, and very readable. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Is he kidding? I wish I could give zero stars!
He, Jeffrey MacDonald, John Orr and Diane Downs should all be roomies.
2-0 out of 5 stars still guilty
An interesting book because of its author; a convicted murderer. Marshall and his late sister did a good job with the writing, but fail to answer too many questions. Why Marshall spent thousands supposedly hiring private investigators from Louisiana to check on missing money in his Harrah's account, something which is central to the story, is never really cleared up. Nor does he address why even his two eldest sons concluded that he was guilty -- not by itself proof of guilt, but worth wondering about. As literature andas debate material, ultimately disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Man Is Innocent!
If you have read the book Blind Faith you MUST read Tunnel Vision also.Robert Marshall gives you a look into the truth about his story. He tells you what really happened when his family was tragically torn apart by his wife's murder. In his book he is able to clear up many untruths that were published in the book Blind Faith.I was amazed at how "uninvolved" his trial lawyer was with his case.To Robert's great unfortune he had the wrong man defending his life.I HIGHLY recommend this book, it is well written and will give any reader great pause.I hope Robert finds the justice he deserves and is released from prison. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
This book has some useful concepts but most of it pretty much useless."If they can't find you, they can't sue you" "open accounts in fictious name, movie stars do it"
1-0 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money
I purchased this book in an effort to educate myself about private practice and the legal pitfalls. I am not sure what M.D. helped write this book, but I am appalled. The presentation and language used, in addition to the numerous typographical errors made the text seem extremely juvenile. Many of the suggestions are completely unrealistic. I was offended as a medical professional and an english major at the frivolity of this book. Do not waste your money or time.

5-0 out of 5 stars No physician should dare be without it
Finally, an effective response to the malpractice lawsuit crisis that's damaging the profession. Extremely readable and is the definitive guide to asset protection.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars First, Do No Harm. The Cure for Medical Malpractice
This book really drives home the issues associated with the "dark side" of healthcare.Whether you term the issue medical negligence or malpractice, it's real and this book does a good job of discussing the subject. The use of real-life examples is excellent.Dr. Williams' practical, no-nonsense approach would seem to go a long way in solving medical malpractice. This book was quite interesting and a quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will buy it given Dr. Van Pelt's scathing comments
I was debating whether or not to buy and read this book until I saw Dr. Van Pelt's comments and then I was sure that I wanted to read it.Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.I will let you know what I thought of the book after I read it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ignorant and Arrogant
I was very disappointed by this book as it really has nothing new. Identifed on the cover as "Dr. Ira E. Williams," the author is a DDS oral/maxillofacial surgeon who has obviously had "turf wars" with MD head and neck surgeons, and seems to have a lot of sour grapes. It is clear to Dr. Williams that he is the superior surgeon, and if he had been consulted could have solved most of the MDs' mistakes. He complained to the local Peer Review Organization about some of his colleagues, and they gave the opinion there was "no substandard care." He concludes that peer organizations have no teeth, and are run by good old boys more concerned with protecting their buddies than in good patient care. In fact, peer review organizations I have been involved in operate almost exactly like the IRPR he ends up recommending in his last chapter, and are staffed by diligent, caring people who honestly want the best for patients, though usually are less arrogant about being sure their approach is the only right one. Meanwhile, he ignores or belittles new approaches (like the aviation model) that actually stand likely to reduce the frightening statistics on medical errors. He gives his prejudice away on page 138 when he states "...the only solution is to identify, control, and discipline negligent practitioners," ignoring the fact that most errors are committed by competent, careful, and up-to-date doctors who are not perfect. Chastising people again and again to never make a mistake and punishing them when they do can never create faultless people, but has created the defensive-medicine mess we're in today.
