Extremely helpful guide
During the extreme stress of preparing for a deposition,my lawyers prepared me for the facts,but not the technique.The examples and philosophy and clarity of writing in this book were INVALUABLE to me.I also found it to be helpfully in dealing with the tremendous emotional impact of the litigation.
Informative and readable
As an attorney who has represented clients on both sides of the proverbial isle, I plan to have my clients read this book before any deposition.Dr. Uribe sucessfully demisifies this process for the non-lawyer and makes it understandable to those who do not think like us.I believe this book gives several useful tools to help those not trained in the law navagate a difficult and stressful experience.Excellent work!

Outright ripoff
I am a plaintiff attorney and read this book out of outright curiosity. It got stars across the board, so I figured it was worth 50 bucks. I could not have been more wrong.Read more

For the honest physician/medical student.
As a current medical student and son of a malpractice lawyer, I found this book intriguing and insightful.His cocnlusions are sound and based on reputable studies conducted by MEDICAL SCHOOLS and PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS with strong ties to healthcare (such as the New England Journal of Medicine).He in no way attacks physicians as a whole.In fact, he devotes a good portion of the book entirely to reform that would PROTECT physicians.His book represents an easy-to-read, fair treatment of malpractice in healthcare.For the open-minded and honest physician/medical student, this book will help you rise above the malpractice myth that is almost universally held by physicians/medical students and completely contested by malpractice attorneys.Very objective and data centered.

lawsuits do not prevent anything
As a physician, I completely disagree with this the author of this book. In fact, how can an insurance professor comment on the complex world of medicinal practice? Lawsuits do not prevent mistakes. On the contrary, they invite mistakes by forcing physicians to order more tests, and be unnecessarily agressive in working up any symptom. If I have a kidney patient whose potassium is on the high side, in fear of lawsuit, I may be more aressive and admit them to the hospital, order EKG and other tests and cost thousands of dollars, or in the ideal world, just change some medicines and follow as an outpatient, which costs a fraction of hospital admission.
comprehensive and enlightning
As a personal injury attorney for the past 34 years I was delighted and relieved to read Tom Baker's The Medical Malpractice Myth. The fact that there is no Medical Malpractice litigation crisis was not news to me, nor was the fact that there is a substantive malpractice crisis - although I was not aware of its extent.

a must have
Concise review of medical legal issues facing physcians today. Most complete guide to understanding medical legal processes
This book is one a kind...it offers the most clear and concise guide to understanding how the medical profession functions in a legal environment.The author very clearly has a vast knowledge base from which to draw upon. The book starts with an overview of the laws and the court system.It then covers important topics such as physician licensing, regulation and discipline, the priveleged doctor-patient relationship, informed consent, maintaining medical records and releasing medical records. Specific scenarios are reviewed for the private practitioner, hospital based practitioner and managed care settings.Of particular interest to me was the section on physicians as expert witnesses and testifying in depositions, hearings and in court.My medical school and residency training provided no education on these subjects or any of the mentioned topics.Sample medical malpractice interrogatories are listed in the book so that you may have an awareness of the types of questions and information that is sought during a deposition. The book also covers the subject of medical malpractice insurance and the process of filing a malpractice claim.After reading this book, you will feel much more confident about how you practice medicine and will experience peace of mind in knowing how to conduct your career within a legal framework.I highly recommend this book to all physicians, residents and medical students, and all individuals who work in the medical field.How did we ever get along without it! ... A Much Needed Text for Contemporary Social Work Practice
I'm a licensed clinical social worker in hospice, with a private practice in money therapy (working with clients on the psychological and spiritual issues underlying their money problems). I speak on the subject of spirituality in social work practice, and was delighted to come across a reference to this book while doing research. It addresses the ethical and legal issues social workers need to consider if they plan to utilize a spiritual or complementarycontext for, or interventions in, their work (I prefer Edward Canda's alternate term, "cultivations"). This is the only text of its kind of which I'm aware, and it's helped me to deepen and solidify the ethical component of my presentations. I especially enjoyed the discussion on the First Amendment and the idea of an "ethical ecology" (which I teach, but do not express in these terms; nevertheless, it's a concept with which I agree completely). I plan to encourage my students and hospice coworkers to read the book (I also highly recommend another book by Bulllis, "Spirituality in Social Work Practice"). The only complaint I have is that this edition (Paperback, 2001) was poorly edited -- too many typos and phrasings that should have been caught by an editor prior to publication. This makes for uneven reading in many spots, but still doesn't obscure the value of the content. ... Read more

Yerrid reels you right in, detail after vivid detail.You get inside his head and to the heart of the common thread in all his cases -- the nearly indominable strength of the human spirit.Not only is it fascinating how his clients' heart-wrenching stories came to be his legal cases in the first place, but the way he builds and executes his strategies lets you see firsthand the way a top gun lawyer thinks and maneuvers.There are poignant parts, whole sections that will compell you to read on faster and faster, and Yerrid's verbatim closing remarks are phenomenal -- expressive, emotionally charged... just brilliant.Read more

Power and law in 19th century medicine
DeVille looks at the development of professional medicine in the 19th century from a legal standpoint. Malpractice directly relates to power and disciplinary structures effecting decision making and the practice of medicine. DeVille touches on pain, but ideas about pain might be better integrated into the legal context this book provides. The narrative is a bit dry, but the information is worth a look as there are few works on the emergence of the medical profession in the United States that focus on how malpractice influenced behavior and policy. ...
