No better guide to today's health news
Health news today is increasingly dominated by legal issues - pharmaceutical torts, end of life lawsuits, Medicare and Medicaid reform efforts, etc.This book will educate you to the level of expert - feel disdain at the idiots discussing tort reform!Laugh at ignorant talking heads who seek to sway you with their flash-card analysis!Seriously though, this one volume will teach you more than a lifetime of Linda Greenhouse columns.

This book is the best of its kind in describing the new terrain covered by the intersection of modern medicine and complementary therapies from a variety of traditions. It should be on the bookshelf of every doc and every CAM provider.

Review from the Integrative Medicine Consult: In this compact and lively analysis, Michael Cohen sums up the history and current status of the legal underpinnings of complementary and alternative medicinevis-a-vis conventional medicine. His language is moderate, falling intoneither the caricature of the strident establishment nor the dreadedflowerchild-like New Age interlopers. Cohen covers the areas of regulation,scope of practice, informed consent and malpractice, and describes some ofthe more widespread alternative providers and treatment. A comprehensivenotes section gives the inquisitive reader an in-depth resource of casestudies and related literature. Cohen argues that the challenge to thecourt system is to regulate providers of medicine and healing treatments,protecting patients from unscrupulous practitioners, and yet giving enoughleeway to preserve an individual's freedom of choice. Laws and regulatorybodies governing medicine in the United States are geared to the reigningbiomedical model, which views the human body as an elaborate machine thatoperates with many distinct functioning parts. Alternative medicine adoptsa broader definition of disease, one that is more holistic. Rules now inplace tend to favor conventional medicine and punish other healingpractices. A wonderful resource
This comprehensive text provides a thoughtful overview of most of the major issues in bioethics that intersect with the American judicial system.The legal citations are scholarly and the organization allows both the student and practitioner (legal or medical) a logical approach to a myriad of thorny issues.

Review of Law in Medicine
Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances.It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization.He has taken a topic thatit difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading.Studentswill find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts.

Brilliant out of the box thinking
I read this book cover to cover in two days. It is a brilliant piece of deep out of the box thinking expressed lucidly; even a layman like me could understand it without having to read again and again.
