5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Well written, easy to understand with loads of advice and comfort for those going through the challenges of a custody battle. The author shares some of her own experiences and leaves you with a feeling of hopeful optimism.I consider this a must-read for any parent going through a divorce.I thought that her comments on dressing for court and behavior during separation were common sense, but perhaps there are some readers who would need to understand better how their image and demeanor affect a judge's perception of them as a parent.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone trying to gain custody of their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce And Cusody
This is the most thorough and informative book on divorce issues that I have read.As a divorce attorney, I am always curious to know what other attorneys are thinking. Ms. Smith's perspective and commentary mirror much of my own experiences and conclusions. The book is easy to read and filled with relevant, realistic examples and practical advice.I highly recommend this book to both nonlawyers, who have a reason to learn about this subject and to lawyers so they can refine and expand their knowedge of the divorce process.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Two Key Books to Read if Contemplating Divorce
This book is one which I would recommend to any individual considering a divorce. One of the authors of the book, Stu Webb, is the "founder" of the collaborative divorce movement. The book should be read before selecting and going forward with traditional adversarial representation. There are several pros of the book are that it is written with one voice - despite being written by two lawyers. It is clearly written. The alternative book is the book with Pauline Tessler as co-author.This books is somewhat longer and more inter-disciplinary in its approach. The co-author is a psychologist. If you are looking for the book that is easiest to read yet, by this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide to a great process!

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource!
As a student who wants to work for agencies to prevent crime on the internet, I wasn't sure how much "Family Law and Practice: The Paralegal's Guide" was going to do for me.It turned out to be an incredible resource, not only of how the system works, but also of the workings of families in suboptimal conditions.5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Students and People Interested in the Law
This is a wonderful book for both students and people interested in family law.It covers everything from the history of family law to current events, such as Roseanne and Tom Arnold's marriage. The cases are more like soap operas than the dry cases one usually associates with law. These cases will inspire great conversation in the classroom and will hold the students' interest from start to finish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important book, along with...
Divorce is one of the most grueling experiences anyone can go through, and this book is a great guide for easing the challenges. The book is packed with information on the legal and emotional issues that are likely to arise -- and how to deal with them. The topics span the board, from making the initial decision, to preparing for trial, to how to talk with the kids about it all.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, but deceptively biased
After reading many, many studies on the subject of divorce, support and custody, and also personally being a single father for 13 years with sole custody of 3 children and also being a non-custodial parent of one younger child I feel I can comment objectively on this book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Extensive Information
This book is filled with extensive information. With over 60% of the population getting divorced, this subject should no longer be taboo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, just not if you live in certain states...
This book is great. It made me think about a lot of things, being unmarried to my live-in partner and having a young child. However, we are moving to Illinois soon, and this book does NOT apply to unmarried, heterosexual couples there.Illinois is one of a handful of states that has laws against cohabitation. If you live in Illinois or another state that still has these types of laws on the books, none of the legal documents that this book helps you prepare are going to hold up in court.I think it's great, however, that a book like this exists and is so detailed and helpful.Cohabitating couples, especially those of us who have children together and plan to buy homes or own property together, need to know the legal issues as individuals and as a couple.I highly recommend this book, though it probably isn't worth your time if your state still has the anti-cohabitation laws.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't live with someone unless you've read this book
Readers should note that this book was written for unmarried opposite-sex couples only.Same-sex couples should instead read _A Legal Guide for Lesbian and Gay Couples_ by Hayden Curry and Denis Clifford, also published by Nolo.Although many of the issues overlap regardless of sexual orientation, this book considers specifically the concerns facing unmarried male-female partners.5-0 out of 5 stars Get It In Writing!
As Judge Judy points out to her audience, there are no courts that protect couples living together.People who decide to live together, need to set up a legal contract. When things fall apart, the last thing needed is the distress and lawsuits that don't have any validity of who or what is owed.In a society that pushes marriage on men and women, it's refreshing to know that there are people who choose to be happy with an alternative lifestyle. When the marriage falters, couples have to seek legal assistance to end their marriage. And divorce drags on for years because the courts fuel the fire which drains both parties emotionally and financially. And children are caught in this mudslinging.Perhaps an alternative to marriage may change the divorce laws in this country. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Reviews encouraged it, so I bought both...
... both "Divorce & Money" books, that is, one by Smith and the other by Woodhouse. And I have to say, while this book DOES have a lower price, in this case you get what you pay for.
5-0 out of 5 stars IN YOUR HOUR OF NEED
Recently, I purchased Gayle Rosenwald Smith's DIVORCE AND MONEY, Everything You Need To Know, as I am starting divorce proceedings for the second time. I cannot recomend this book highly enough. I was confused as to why this informative, excellent book has recieved such negative comments by some of Amazon's reviewers. There is another book with the same title--but with a different sub-title, that was refered to as preferable; eventhough I found that Nolo Press book (which I examined) to be less informative, more difficult to comprehend and more expensive; $14.95 v. $34.99.
1-0 out of 5 stars This is the wrong book!
I got this book on accident after my friend recommended the Nolo book by the same name. I was really not expecting much and this book lived up to my expectations because it kept saying "Go see a lawyer! Go see a lawyer!" Then my friend saw I had the wrong book... Part of the reason I picked up this book was all the good reviews, but then I see that many of them come from Philadelphia, where this book's author is from. Coincidence? Probably not because all their comments don't seem to match the contents. Do yourself a favor and get the Nolo book, it's really much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" resource for every practicing attorney whose work takes him into the sphere of bankruptcy law
"Attorney Liability in Bankruptcy" is a "must-have" resource for every practicing attorney whose work takes him into the sphere of bankruptcy law. Filled from cover to cover with up-to-date (as of 2006) critical letters and forms needed to comply with recent legal changes and the imperatives of the new bankruptcy law, Attorney Liability in Bankruptcy covers everything from dealing with creditors' lawyers to bankruptcy ethics issues to reaffirming debt after bankruptcy and much more. An accompanying CD-ROM with letters that can be quickly modified to suit appropriate situations and jurisdictions, Attorney Liability in Bankruptcy is easy-to-use, utterly invaluable resource, and also recommended for lay readers seeking to brush up on legal changes before consulting an expensive bankruptcy attorney. No general practice law office can afford to be without a copy of "Attorney Liability in Bankruptcy" in their professional reference library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers Many Topics
This book hit on many topics and is a good reference book to use throughout the various stages of your divorce. Touches on a wide variety of things and generally answers some questions you might have. Some advice in this book I did not see in other divorce books such as what to do about debt in both of your names. Outlines what to do about credit card debt in both names as well as mortgage debt in both names. Mortgage debt is harder to get out of your name even if your spouse is awarded the asset. You are both still liable for mortgage debt until it is paid off or refinanced. Even if your divorce decree says that your former spouse is responsible for paying it. Book tells you how to communicate with credit card companies in regard to protecting your credit.
5-0 out of 5 stars thorough, reliable
Divorce for Dummies is a thorough overview of the divorce process and ways to make it easier and less expensive. I know the authors from interviewing them for my Internet radio show, [...] and other articles, and I know they are very careful in the resources and information they present. I also believe they really do have the consumer's best interest at heart.

Anger and hurt tend to figure strongly in divorce, hand-in-hand with resentment, sadness, and fear about your future. And more often than not, these emotional woes all coalesce under the banner of money. Nolo Press is known for its thorough research and user-friendly approach to legal matters, and its book on

5-0 out of 5 stars Take it from me, this is the best book
All the dueling reviews below would have you wonder about the quality of both "Divorce and Money" books, so as an experiment I got both. It's pretty clear that this book (Nolo's) is the better one, hands down. The difference was evident in just minutes. Everything's presented in easy to read verbiage, the charts are easy to use, and the forms and checklists were really handy. Helped me and my ex make the split easier than I expected, frankly. Thank you for this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book!
Okay I might be exagerating but I did love this book. A friend recommended it after my husband and I decide to "part ways." I accidently picked up the other book with the same title and was not so thrilled with all the Get A Attorney advice, but then I realized my mistake and got this version -- it's SO helpful. It almost took me by the hand and showed me how to be less emotional than I would be when making decisions affecting how to split our property and bills up, and how to figure out child support.

1-0 out of 5 stars My eyes glazed over.........FELT LIKE I WAS IN LATIN CLASS!!
Read both books and all the reviews of 2 books with basically the same name and if you want more information in a MUCH MORE user friendly, readable (in English) format at 1/2 the price buy the other book by Smith, Divorce and Money Everything you need to know.I read a review that the Smith book just wants you to hire expensive lawyers.NOTHING could be further from the truth. No matter what, you need a lawyer and this book tells you the same thing. It doesn't mean you have to be stupid! As a normal, middle class guy with a college education and MY OWN BUSINESS this book makes you feel like you are in Latin Class again.Do your self a favor and not only buy Smith's book on Money get her book on Children.......you will save lots of time and stress. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear explanation
Another clear, concise explanation book from Examples series.
2-0 out of 5 stars Worst Examples & Explanations That I Have Ever Read
As I read this book, I was under the distinct impression that the authors forgot about the deadline for completion and wrote it overnight. The editor of this book should lose his job.He should also be blackballed from the industry.I stopped counting spelling and grammatical errors within thirty minutes because I needed every ounce of concentration that I could possibly muster to read the unfriendly text.I have praised the Examples and Explanations series throughout my law-school career. However, I might actually be forced to burn this one and to pretend that it never existed. The authors omit important details and provide vague descriptions of important cases and points of law. Also, some sentences make no sense because words "switched positions are."The examples and explanations lack substance and imagination.Text explaining an aspect of law is immediately followed by an example and an explanation that repeats the text. Also, the authors used "P" and "D" as the names in almost every example.I am thoroughly disappointed with this book.I would suggest buying it only if you have no other options.I would wait for the second edition.Surely, Aspen Publishers cares about its reputation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a difficult situation
While going through a divorce can be difficult, this book shows that there are real, concrete ways to make it less so.The book is well organized.Written in plain English, it's also easy to understand. It offers good tips and links to other valuable resources. The book provides important guidelines for managing finances, preparing and filing legal papers, dividing property and more. The author continually stresses the importance of taking the high road, which helps keep the flame low on a potentially volatile situation. When both parties are in respectful relationship to each other, she writes, it helps ease the process and make for a smoother transition after the divorce, which is especially important when there are children to consider. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time/money - get a lawyer
I purchased this book to help file forms on a stepparent adoption.I submitted the form that was included on the CD "Petition to Terminate Parental Rights of the Alleged Father".To my dismay, they told me that I was using an "outdated" template, as the Civil Code 7409(a) that was referenced was repealed 10 years ago.I sought help from an attorney who told me that this is now under Family Code Section 7611.I do not trust the forms now, as I fear there may be other mistakes that I do not know of, as I am not an attorney.
5-0 out of 5 stars An easy and at times fun way to save thousands on adopting
This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to adopt their spouse's child and has the consent of the other bio-parent (or other stipulation such as the death of the bio-parent, etc.). It not only provides needed forms, butalso has word-by-word examples of the documents you will need to typeyourself (for me, that was actually fun!) Additionally, if you live in LosAngeles as I did during the process, it gives you special instructions forfiling in L.A. county - very helpful! I had to pay only a $700 assessmentfee and 2 or 3 small filing fees and the whole process, from filing theinitial petition to the final hearing (which is especially enjoyable) wascompleted in under 4 months! And the experience brought me even closer toour 5 year old little girl as well as my wife! A lawyer quoted me legalfees of "$2,500 to $3,000, not including filing and assessmentfees" before I found this book. You will not only save money, but comeaway with an amazing sense of accomplishment and a renewed appreciation foryour family. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more
