1-0 out of 5 stars Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability
Not at all helpful if you are filling out an application for SSDI benefits.More than 3/4 of the book is on the appeal process and social security system jargon. You can tell it is written by a lawyer, its worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nolo's Guide to Social Security Disability by Iii MD et al.
This book is invaluable for anyone contemplating a disability claim or for anyone seeking to preserve benefits. The authors explain the elements of a claim; namely the severity of an impairment and its impact on the ability to function in a work environment or setting. The MINE claims are predefined by the law. These are "Medical Improvement Not Expected". i.e. a number of debilitating arthritic diseases or diseases of the musculo-skeletal system
5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book overall
This is an excellent book of the whole area of Social Security Disability benefits and how to fill the forms out completely, when to seek an attorney for appeals etc, and a rather extensive section on what the term disability means to Social Security and what diseases, conditions etc qualify and which do not.The only area lacking was disabled spousal Social Security Disability coverage, which a spouse under age 50 with no minor children must file for in the same way the working spouse who becomes disabled would have to do.I plan on donating my copy which I bought via Amazon.com to my local public library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Primer For Family Law Clients, Courts and Academics
As one who has read a number of books (both academic and popular)about custody, divorce and family courts, I found Andrew Schepard's book to be a unique and important contribution. It is both a comprehensive, well researched scholarly work and a clearly written and accessible primer for those new to the topic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Child Focused Family Courts
This book does a great job of pulling together, in a very clear way, all of the important issues facing families and the courts that must address their problems. It is concise and accessible but also contains a wealth of cited resources for additional information. It provides the model for what a child focused Famliy Court should look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Meeting of Minds and Disciplines
Schepard does what many professionals before him have only endeavored to do; he integrates the fields of law and psychology in one comprehensive resource written at a level accessible to the masses.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ for anyone going through a divorce
At 32 years old, I'm the first one of my friends to go through a divorce (after 5 years of marriage), and while my girlfriends were tremedously supportive of me, none of them have ever gone through something like this and there are some things that only someone who has survived a divorce can understand. This book was like an old friend, comforting me, guiding me through the process, assuring me that everything I was feeling was normal and to be expected.A year later, it still sits on my nightstand, battered and highlighted in yellow marker, being read and re-read whenever I need support.Of course, this book is not substitute for therapy, but I don't think I could have gotten through this past year without it. I would recommend this book to ANYONE going through a divorce.I've also seen some reviews on here by someone who finds the book to be "pro-divorce", and that is not the case at all.The authors merely acknowledge the fact that divorces happen, provide comfort and advice without passing judgement on the how and why, and help those of us who are going through the process to make the best of the situation and feel somewhat hopeful about our futures.

5-0 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind
This book is not for people who are not sure whether they want a divorce. It will not suggest that you work harder on your marriage, and it will not tell you that you are making a mistake. It will also not give helpful advice on how to save a marriage.I think the title should be sufficient warning of its target audience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce in your 20s & 30s!
I went to the bookstore to pick up a book on divorce - what I found was books that were either very heavy on the legal end or books for women with children. There was nothing out there for books for 20/30 somethings going through a divorce within the first 5 years -that spoke to me, not my mother.Someone recommended this book and I ordered it within the first 3 weeks after the big break-up.I was looking for something that spoke to me, in a girlfriend type of tone, not a preaching tone and this was PERFECT.It took me through what to expect in the beginning, the cycle of what would happen, how to tell people (or not tell people), and what to expect. It had great vignettes within it that illustrated situations similar to what I was going through and served as a general companion that helped me get through the healing process in the first six months. It was exactly what I needed.I would strongly recommend this to someone in their 20s/30s, first marriage, no kids - its right in-line with the chick lit out there and laughs and cries with you.Without this, I don't think I could have handled everything as well as I have.A must read over all the other books on the subject out there! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Made a difference
My divorce was handled via mediation and ended up being (relatively) civilized (though still painful), in part because of the advice in this book.As the commenter from Boston noted it does take two rationale people to make this occur, and I was fortunate to be in that situation. But in many ways it was because of this guide that I approached the situation more rationally and in the end that helped make a difference.

1-0 out of 5 stars In a better world maybe...
This book assumes you do not have a spouse who wants nothing other than to cut off your balls and take everything you've got and/or that she is willing to act with some degree of rationality.Well...guess what. That is simply not the case all the time.Maybe if I had the sense to start my divorce several years earlier, it would have been possible to utilize the very sensible advice in this book.Unfortunately, this advice was of no practical benefit in my situation and no amount of understanding or common sense on my part would have changed the situation.
3-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate title
The title of this book should be: "The wealthy, middle-aged man's..."The book has good information, but none of the men in any of the examples in this book make less than $100,000/yr, and all of the advice is geared towards men in their late 40's earning 100K+.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed!!
Helps you to understand the complexity of marital debt/assets.In doing post-divorce mediation, the aftermath is worse than the initial filing of the divorce petition. Here we have two consenting adults reigning over the financial thrones of the other.Leaving their financial future in the hands of someone bitter will only gain negative results. What makes one think the court order will enforce resolution? The other party may not feel the urge to pay out of malice. This can lead to foreclosures, collection calls, garnishments, jdgements/liens, (ALL in YOUR name!!!) and frustration.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book did what it set out to do
This got us started on the road to our new biz, but what it lacked was real help filling out the State forms.Nolo has another book that does just that (and I recommend it if you are really looking for help with forms). If you are still in the decision making process as to which type of business you want to have (e.g. partnership, LLC, corporation types) and what it takes to run an LLC, this is one to keep on your shelf. My favorite part of this book, Nolo's Quick LLC, is a great chart delineating the differences between different types of businesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great LLC Premer
This book and the accompaning book entitled "Form your LLC" are the best books that I have read on the subject. I was able to put an LLC together, run it by my attorney, and using the info for filing, set up my own LLC.Especially good are the suggestions for finding an attorney and tax man that will help you stay out of trouble.I recommend these books to anyone looking to set up an LLC.The publisher, NOLO PRESS, does a good job on all sorts of legal self help books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nolo's Quick LLC
Left a lot of questions unanswered.Gave reference to find more detail answers to questions about LLCs. Was hoping book would be an answer to all you ever wanted to know about LLC, but it wasn't.While it was helpful, I still had to get answers to some critical questions.I finally hired a lawyer that speciallizes in LLCs, Corporation, and Real Estate. ... There are no accidents: I met the author of this book when she had just received her first copies from the publisher; I was floundering trying to get accurate information about what to do, when and how to do it.Lawyers, legal referrals, community organizations and friends were trying to "help" by offering advice, much of it well-intended but inaccurate and COSTLY, both in the short- and long-term.5-0 out of 5 stars UNIQUELY EFFECTIVE TOOL

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.....
This book is a must-read for anyone who has read and successfully applied, "How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men". The tips in here can be applied to dumping girlfriends and brides alike, and are essential to recovering mental health!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Covington covers a lot
Yes a woman named Lee wrote this book. She was on the radio talking about it.I had thought it was a man.My ignorance.I am the first to admit that divorce is horrible but sometimes necessary.Ask any loving man that has a self absorbed wife.Men get the short end of the stick in divorce and this is the one book you will find that addresses how you can get out with more than just the shirt on your back which she (and I mean her lawyer not her) will still try to get.The main thing is planning. If you plan ahead you will make divorce as painless for you as possible. If you are a woman reading this and think god how could someone write about this, take a look at the number of books written on the reverse side that show how to squeeze a man until he cries like a choir boy.Ms. Covington does say that you may have to pay and in some cases you should pay but the lawyers are the ones that will pressure your dear wife to nail you for everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yess! You gonna need this book.
Get the book before your wife had put her hands on it all. You gonna need all advice you can get. You may save on a lawyer as well by reading it ahead! And on the doctor too.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What every family judge, attorney, and parent should read
The author, who happens to be a judge, writes from the unique point of view of the child's interest -- not the mother's, father's, attorney's or GAL's (the latter two who usually run the show in family court). While it's well-known that most divorces are won by whoever has the most money and the best-connected lawyer (still, about money and paybacks to courts and judges - yes, it's a fact!) -- it's wonderful to discover that there are still a few wise people out there who care about the children involved. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mason's book demysifies The Custody Wars brilliantly.
The thesis of Berkeley Law Professor Mary Ann Mason's highly readable and powerfully argued The Custody Wars is that the U.S. legal system fails to provide adequate representation and concern for the interests of childrenin custody disputes.Judiciously articulated irony abounds, as when Masonexposes the court system's vulnerability to the cynically utilizedself-interest of many middle/upper class fathers and mothers for whomparenting is on the back burner. On the other hand, it is equally ironicthat parents of both genders who practice self-sacrificism (not healthy, involved parenting) are sometimes the most childishly selfish in insistingupon their entitlement, regardless of the child's feelings. We learn ofchildren whose lives are ridiculously fragmented and enervated by jointcustody shuttlings, and yet we also hear of children who have benefitedfrom the arrangement, thanks in large measure to the parents' maturity. As evidenced by the specificity and nuanced analysis in her case studies,Mason's scrupulous fairness and flexibility in offering parameters ofjudgment about custodial fitness are rooted in compassion for the child'swell-being.She simultaneously seeks reasonably objective standards whilerealizing how difficult they are to determine, especially on ideologicalbattlefields.Hers is wisdom unavailable to radical relativists or thetheologically impaired. To note only two of many fine examples of her clearthinking about how the court system can be changed to make custodydecisions more child-centered, Mason proposes that judges be educated inchild development and that reviews of custody arrangements be mandated whenthe child is 7 and 12.Professor Mason has much of interest forvarious potential readerships. There are chapters on the unwed father, stepparents, domestic violence, gay and lesbian parents, and "testtube troubles."Mason's argument merits serious attention from abroad spectrum of policy-makers, academics, and warring couples andex-couples.In fact, as a friend of mine, a single mother faced withabsurd demands from a father with an abysmal track record, declared,"This book should be required reading for every couple consideringmarriage or children." ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice On Legal System, Thumbs Down On Lowdown Tactics
If you still love your estranged husband (or wife, for that matter, as the text is relevant to both sexes), toss this book, walk away and forget it has ever come into your possession. "Divorce War" is written for those who believe in getting even in the event of a separation, not least in their being awarded a huge financial settlement at the time of divorce. If you see yourself belonging to this category, the book sets out to advance some 50 strategies, albeit vindictive ones, on how you could make the best of the situation when your other half decides to opt out of your life or vice versa. 5-0 out of 5 stars Know Thine Enemy
Men, hold your horses - you should definitely read this before getting married.Family Court is a franchised whorehouse in all 50 states, with the lawyers all claiming to be piano players and your soon-to-be ex-wives laughing all the way to the bank.In states like Colorado, you'll be paying out 40% of your gross income to the non-working party (read: wife/limpet) when your divorce gets started (it's a state law).In Massachusetts, you have a better chance of getting custody of your kids if you're a lesbian.
4-0 out of 5 stars must read for men
This book should be required reading for all males age 18-40 who are either contemplating getting married or making the mistake of getting married again. One must move beyond the shallow male vs female argument and focus on how marriage, while never being in mens interests, is now more than ever just a temporary business arrangement that should be avoided at all costs. This book will reinforce that modern independent males are powerless against the perverted religious and biased government interests that perpetuate the institution of marriage. Read it - then join the national mens marriage boycott. ... Read more
