1-0 out of 5 stars Info reasonable (if dating quickly), but twisted by anger
While much of the info is correct (if changing quickly, thanks to the rise of shared-custody arrangements), the tone perpetuates the stereotype of raging ex-husband who demonizes the wife, and aims to "win".There's no winning with an attitude like this. And I see this attitude leaving woman after woman feeling like she has to simply shut down any attempt at communication and relationship-building with her ex.
4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic
this book is informative. It shows you what you might expect. For me, it was a review of what has happened and a quick look at what I might have to look forward to.It was a good book.It showed me that my illogical, so to be ex-wife, is not the only woman out there who cares more about herself than the best interests of her child. When do we, as a society, get real about this and do something about it?Keep in mind that the best way to divorce (even with children involved) is to be able to discuss things with your spouse and to work them out amicably. If that is not happening please, for the sake of yourself and your children, do not just roll over and let her walk over you.Read this book or a book like it, and seek out an attorney who communicates and has experience with what you are going through. It will cost money but it is well worth it.Most of all, your child will appreciate the effort you put forth to continue your relationship with her (or him).

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book and read it, take notes, study it, and then file for your divorce.
This is one of the best books I've found on divorce and/or custody issues. It is easy enough to read for the novice, yet is packed with information to be valuable to an expert. Get this book and read it, take notes, study it, and then file for your divorce. It will be some of the best money you will spend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone even thinking of getting a divorce!
I bought this book and even though I used a lawyer it was great.I totally understood everything to expect and it did not seem so confusing.I really liked seeing what the forms are.The info about mediation would have helped me a lot if I ordered the book before we went to the lawyer. The advice about custody was so right.

2-0 out of 5 stars divorce is STILL too difficult even with this book..
even with the book, i feel like its too much of a maze for us.. we might have to get a lawyer after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and very helpful
This book was so helpful. It explained the laws and my alternatives. Even though I ended up getting an attorney because my case was reallycomplicated and nasty, I used the book to answer questions that came up.Being able to look at the forms in the book really helped me to understandwhat my attorney was doing ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Data from a Terrible Professor
I am a current graduate student of Professor Weitzman. My classmates and I are extremely disappointed that our university has employed Weitzman--for hundreds of reasons. As for this book, though... The book says that women and children see a 72% drop in their standard of living while men's increases 42%. Weitzman blamed the error of 72%, which should be more like half of that number, on her research assistant. Did Weitzman not check the data analysis? Why did she base an entire book on her inaccurate numbers? This book was once considered groundbreaking, so much that it influenced policy at least in the U.S. and Canada, causing millions of divorcees to pay more spousal and child support than they should have. My rating is really ZERO stars. If you want to know more about this book, simply Google Weitzman's name, and you will find at least 700 websites dedicated to criticizing her.

1-0 out of 5 stars based on flawed research and mathematical errors
Weitzman falsified data and made numerous mathematical errors and faulty data gathering techniques to make her case that women and children suffer much worse financially after divorce than do divorced fathers.Feministpropaganda at its finest, which has been used to hurt many children andfathers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a difficult situation
While going through a divorce can be difficult, this book shows that there are real, concrete ways to make it less so.The book is well organized.Written in plain English, it's also easy to understand. It offers good tips and links to other valuable resources. The book provides important guidelines for managing finances, preparing and filing legal papers, dividing property and more. The author continually stresses the importance of taking the high road, which helps keep the flame low on a potentially volatile situation. When both parties are in respectful relationship to each other, she writes, it helps ease the process and make for a smoother transition after the divorce, which is especially important when there are children to consider. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me
Well, I did my own divorce in 2000 and I used this book. It can be confusing if you are trying to do a more involved divorce. Mine was a simple agreed divorce, with no kids or property to split up... So if you got more things involved, you might want to use a lawyer or do as much as you can by yourself to save you money.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very expensive mistake
This book does not cover some extremely important issues, such as appeals, appeal periods and motions for new trials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mother's best interest or childs?
I have news for Deedra, it is just as humiliating, infuriating, and degrading for a father as it is for a mother. If women spent more time meeting the short and long term needs of their children they wouldn't be so wounded. Mother's start out on top with the legal system and usually end up on top. Deedra and the other women are heard by the legal system even when they whisper. It doesn't need to be a fight if everyone is concentrating on our children. Children need a mother and a father even if those people live in different homes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Most Inspirational Book for Women!
This is the most inspirational child custody book I have seen. The 8 pages of Index allow women to find thir way through the legal and emotional battle. Personally, I think that custody is more of a parent's issue than a men against women issue. Although this book does not deal with unsual situations, it is worth the $10.00 price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool, calm, professional advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Leading Judge's Insights into California Divorce
As presiding judge of Silicon Valley's Santa Clara County Family Court, Judge Stewart has made decisions regarding the dissolution of literally thousands of California marriages. He knows what he is talking about, and in this fascinating account he provides the strategies to enable people to come though the process with as little damage to themselves, their children, their spouses, and their finances as possible.Anyone facing divorce in California, or elsewhere, for that matter, should buy this book and study it carefully.5-0 out of 5 stars Divorce Handbook for California: How to dissolve your marrig
I found Judge Stewart's Divorce Handbook for California to be not only incredibly thorough, but also quite easy to understand and free of condescending "legalese". In fact, there is an extensive glossary of terms that I could quickly refer to if I was at all unsure of a legal concept. This book is superior to the "do it yourself" variety, because it illustrates a variety of legal options for the reader, including how to hire a competent attorney and yet protect yourself financially. Because divorce is such a complicated and emotional process, it is reassuring to have a clear and comprehensive resource to turn to for info on a variety of legal issues, such as spousal support, division of property, custody, attorneys etc. I enthusiastically recommend this extremely useful book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best resource on divorce in the market!
This book is arguably the most respectable and comprehensive guidebook on Divorce out there in the market place. The book draws on literally thousands of important and current research studies and synthesizes the information in a balanced way, pointing out inconsistencies in the research and highlighting clear trends in the data. It addresses all major questions anyone might have about divorce, its causes, the process, and its consequences. As a legal professional I find it answers many of the questions that I am often faced with and have never found a clear answer to. Elsewhere one finds loads of unqualified opinions, but solid research based information is hard to come by. I don't have the time to review thousands of studies and to compare their results. So having this book is in incredible help. The authors have done a great job toning down professional research jargon. The book features case studies that highlight certain points and give the book some flesh and blood among the wealth of facts and statistics. I have a library of divorce books but none of those other books covered divorce from start to finish as well as this one did while supporting all points with up to date research.

5-0 out of 5 stars transformative reading
Pauline Tesler is able to combine thought-provoking theory with practical process advice. This is an indispensable tool for collaborative practitioners as well as fascinating reading for anyone who is concerned about the emotional and financial toll of traditional divorce.Working with attorneys as problem-solvers, rather than adversarial litigators, is a revolutionary concept whose time has come. This book provides expert guidance for professionals and the public about the collaborative option.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Collaborative Bible
As an attorney engaged in collaborative practice, I make more use of Pauline Tesler's book than any other practice resource. Beyond explaining the basic collaborative philosophy in clear terms, her book provides the practical, step-by-step tools that a practitioner needs to get through the challenging parts of the process. 5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource
Pauline Tesler's book, Collaborative Law, is an outstanding resource for attorneys interested in transforming the litigious divorce process into a client-oriented, principled, and efficient way to solve the problems associated with ending a marital relationship. It not only explains the principles of collaborative family law but provides substantial guidance in making the paradigm shift to this innovative approach and comes with a disk with a core collection of forms needed to get started as a collaborative lawyer. As a family law attorney for over 27 years and a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers I found this book to be invaluable. Nonlawyers will also find this book helpful in finding a better way to divorce. Collaborative family law is growing throughout the U.S. and Canada--and Pauline Tesler has played a leading role in this through her lectures and this fine book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars practical advice
I found this book very helpful and readable in the two months after I discovered my wife's affair. The author writed very specifically to a female audience, but asserts (and I agree) that most of the advice is applicable to spouses of either gender.Harvey goes a long way to breaking paralysis and offering something to the agonizing "what do I do?".
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, practical advice
A few months ago my wife told me about her affair and desire to leave.Since that time, I've read a number of books telling me how to save my marriage and survive infidelity, even if my wife didn't want to stay married.I tried all sorts of things to keep our marriage together, some of them "guaranteed" to work.
5-0 out of 5 stars You must have this book
I read this book within a week after my wife left me, and it helped me tremendously. Donald Harvey maybe oversimplifies things, but when you are going through the crisis, you want to know why this is happening and what to do. Not all of the "why" questions will ever be answered, but this book helped me make some sense of what was going on, why a spouse leaves and what to do and how to do it. Most of the time if someone leaves a marriage it is the husband and just to make it easier to read he refers to the spouse that has left as "he" or the "husband".
