A Thoughtful and Hopeful Approach to Ethics
Luizzi outlines a very sensitive and hopeful view of ethics in this book.He favors a pragmatic approach to ethics that makes room for a multiplicity of truths and ongoing evaluation of one's actions.He rejects the ethics that emerge from Kantianism and Utilitarianism because they are too rigid, and if they are to be followed as the standard of rule, they can lead to absurd ethical decisions.His pragmatic view is flexible and requires personal ongoing evaluation into what roles we play in our personal and professional lives.

Excellent reading
The reader of the cassette tape version of *Treatise on Law* does an excellent job--well-paced, clear, and natural-sounding (as natural as a medieval philosopher can be made to sound!).I listened to this a few times while commuting.That's not easy to do as the book is rather dense, and I would not recommend doing that unless you already have some familiarity with subject matter.There is one thing that makes putting Aquinas's *Summa Theologica* on tape particularly unwieldy: the objections are all stated, followed by the responsio, and then the replies.By the time you get to the replies you will probably have forgotten which objection was which, and the context of the replies does not always make this clear.I rate the production 5 stars nonetheless, because I think it would probably be taking too great of inappropriate editorial liberties to group objections with replies together--even though this would probably make them easier to understand.Obviously, you should have a copy of the text to refer to when you get home; then you can sort out confusions. A Seminal Work in the History of Natural Law
Admitedly a difficult work to read, Thomas Aquinus' Treatise on Law is well worth the effort. Its difficulty stems from the strictures of its genre-- the scholastic method of dispution, important in the devolpement ofmodern critical thinking. The treatise is a rich work that seeks to probethe limits of human ethical knowledge. He asks us to consider the questions"what are my rights, how can I know and guarantee them, what are thelimits of the state in relation to the individual." If you've everpondered the meaning of the words "we hold these truths to beself-evident" in the Declaration of Independence, start with thisbook. Aquinus has few peers in his understanding of what it means to be ahuman-being. Agree or disagree with him, Aquinus' vision of a universewhose very fabric both constitutes and guarantees a moral order is deeplymoving and ennobling. No less a person than the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther Kingacknowledged in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail his debt to the Treatiseon Law. If you love freedom, read this book!

Must-Read for Lawyers - get a happy professional life.
This book is many things - 2 books in one; a hothouse of numberless surveys; sourcebook for further research. It is factual, dark, frightening, compelling, objective, a must-read. It is hopeful, optimistic, wholesome.
Is it time for a revolution in the legal profession?
Professor Daicoff has written an important and pivotal book in "Lawyer. Know Thyself."This book really has two audiences, the legal profession and the rest of us.She has managed to present a very scholarly work in a manner that the lay can easily understand and appreciate.She identifies three critical themes of the American legal system as is presently practiced, i. e. low level of integrity of lawyers and judges, low public opinion of the profession, and low level of job satisfaction.She has presented this work with a very human and distressing vignette of a fictional lawyer in the preface, a very readable body of the book (peppered with lawyer jokes), and voluminous notes at the end of each chapter.These notes are conveniently left out of the main text and allow one to read through without interruption. Yet, the notes reveal not only the depth of the research, which is profound, but also therein is a second book for the educators and scholars.The notes commonly include Professor Daicoff's comments and opinions of the cited work.There is a final chapter suggesting a "cure" for this malady.She suggests a Comprehensive Law Movement encompassing ten vectors of compassionate and humanizing forces.Read more

Illuminating!
One other example for reality (truth - considering the author!)being far more riveting than fiction!The decay of american Law (and society, for that matter) is traced back to how a profession betrayed itself! The"Miranda" debacle of Bobby K. started the real breakdown.
