An excellent & handy resource for beginning law students!
Gilbert's Pocket Law Dictionary is a professional, succinct, and handy resource for beginning law, social studies, and government studies students. Its small, handy format makes it easy to have ready in any class, and provides professional and easy to understand definitions for the layman. There haven't been very many terms that I haven't been able to find in this professional yet affordable resource.

Whata great surprise
I have practiced law in New York City for 23 years and I ordered this bookfor my secretary to help her with the spelling of legal terms. I took alook at it before giving it to her and was amazed at the quality of thisdictionary. Very complex legal ideas are reduced to common sensedefinitions. The definitions cover virtually all fields of law. This bookeven has an attitude; I especially enjoy lines like "In the manystates where fornication is still a crime, there are a lot ofcriminals." Not very useful
As an in-house translator at a law firm in Tokyo, I find this dictionary to be pretty useless for most practical matters. Plenty of legal vocabulary is missing and plenty of not-very-legal vocabulary is included. I'm not sure why it includes English and Japanese versions of the U.S. and Japanese constitutions, either. WWWJDIC and ALC, both available online for free, are *much* more useful for everyday legal translation. ... Read more

This is the secret dictionary used by US Supreme Court
I'm not a lawyer but I play one on television. If I was going to throw the book at someone, this is the book I would want to throw. I mean, it's a really BIG dictionary! Lots of words, but, unfortunately, no pictures. Iespecially like the definition of "wharfinger," also"Herkemer."

Only English law dictionary helpful on civil law matters

Good, But Unnecessary for Most Readers
Oran and Tosti do a nice job of defining legal terms for the nonlawyer. As a professional who needs to understand legal terminology, however, I have found this book unnecessary. I bought "Law Dictionary for Nonlawyers" before I acquired "Black's Law Dictionary." The latter is so complete and has such clear definitions that I rarely even bother to use "Law Dictionary for Nonlawyers." Read more
