Too much money for too little information
I agree with Michael Troyanski's review.This book is way too basic and, at least to me, seemed very repetitive.The author spends too much time promoting the assessment center process rather than giving the candidate needed ideas and strategies. The pages are double spaced and the book has the appearance of being made on a copy machine.I was let down, given the astronomical price of the book.If you are new to the assessment center process it will give you a basic overview.I felt better prepared with materials and conversations I obtained from other folks in my agency that have already been through the process.

An Excellent Book For Preparation of Assessment Centers!
When our Police Department announced that the testing process for the two open captain positions would be changed to an assessment center, everyone began a search for the best approach to prepare for the process. Dr. O'Leary's book is the one I chose. The guidelines and sugestions were excellent. I finished first on the oral board component and second in the overall scoring. Today I am a Captain with a major mid-western police department. Without the PROPER guide for understanding and preparation of assessment center testing, I would have been lost! This book is written in simple text and is easy to follow.

Very Helpful and Easy Read
This book is very helpful with practical advise about how to live in a cop's family.It deals with the day to day realities as well as the traumas that go along with living with a cop.It was an easy read that didnt give a bunch of doctor jargon.I highly recomend this book to anyone that lives with a cop, is a cop, or just wants to understand what its like to be a cop.

What a wonderfully put together book on cops. Very useful book
I was assigned this book to read in one of my AJ classes and I'm really glad I did. I will be the cop in my family, not the spouse, but there are still important things to think about for the cops themselves. My husband has started to read it to know what he should be prepared for.

Great read
"Detective" belongs on the same shelf as Robin Moore's "French Connection" and Peter Maas's "Serpico." Kathy Burke's career with the NYPD was exciting, contentious, tragic--yet ultimately groundbreaking and triumphant. Burke battled crooks, killers, corrupt cops, nasty superior officers, and her own demons. That she had the guts to deal with all that--and more--is the fuel that propels this compelling book.

Wrong answers on obedience research
Alfred McCoy's A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror, is a timely and informative book. The CIA's recent and ongoing use of torture, with George W. Bush's support and encouragement, is one of the most outrageous aspects of the so-called "War on Terror." I assume that much of the book's history of CIA torture techniques and practices is accurate. But I am personally familiar with at least two strands of that "history," and McCoy's discussion of those strands is wildly inaccurate.

...And justice for all
What an amazing read; I had this book saved on my wish list entirely TOO LONG.I was intrigued when I first heard of the case on ABC's 20/20 program and Nate's book was a sparkling expose.
A good book
Nate Blakeslee's "Tulia" tells the story of the small town of Tulia, Texas, where one white man was able to arrest over forty black men (and women) with almost no evidence and no documentation of their alleged crimes.

I found this to be riviting reading. The writer gives us a glimpse into the lives of many people in Tulia.After reading the book, we feel that we know these people.A good job of covering the whole story.

A must-read for every Security Manager/Executive

When William Bratton was a year and a half old, his mother caught him directing traffic in the street out front of their Boston home. From that moment on, it seemed destined that he would become a cop. In this book, Bratton and his coauthor, Peter Knobler, chronicle Bratton's career, focussing particularly on his efforts to revitalize Boston's and New York City's police departments. Bratton rose quickly through the ranks of the Boston Police Department, where he pioneered community policing and cleaned up the city's subway system. As New York's transit-police chief, he cracked down on minor offenses like turnstile jumping on the theory that the people who commit more serious crimes underground also commit smaller ones. It worked. Finally, Bratton realized his dream of becoming America's top cop: the New York City Police Commissioner. The city's crime rate dropped over 10 percent a year during Bratton's brief tenure as top cop, until Mayor Giuliani's administration forced him out of the job in 1996.Read more

Better than Giuliani's Book
This reviewer has no insight into how much of the book was written by Bratton and how much was written Knobler.Regardless, this book is a quick and delightful read.The language is rough and informal as one might expect from a police chief turned author, but is written with enough balance that it could be used a textbook for a criminology class.Assuming that Knobler had a major hand in this book, this reviewer intends to seek out his other books to see if they are as excellently written.
A New Paradigm in Police Leadership
I have been teaching college level police management courses since 1976.I began to cite Bratton's tactics and leadership style in my lectures after he appeared in TIME and predicted that his name will be in police text books in the near future along with other heavyweights.Sure enough, in John Dempsey's "Introduction To Policing" (second edition) Bratton's COMPSTAT efforts are cited on pages 24-25.What is surprising to me are the negative reviews posted on this Amazon review section.They apparently have no clue on the nature of social disorder fostered in the "Broken Window" syndrome embraced by Bratton and integrated into his crime-specific targeting tactics of COMPSTAT. And yes crime did decrease in the nation during that period but that had nothing to do with targeting the notorious "window wipers" and recently paroled ex-cons (read the book to learn about these police tactics). I wonder if the negative reviewers are part of the traditional set that resisted needed change in how police do business?But I respect Bratton for his leadership style.Talk to New York transit cops who got new radios, Glocks and black leather jackets.Those little things mean a lot to street cops and that's what bonds them to their leaders.And, after being on the job only for a few weeks, he goes into the NYPD precinct to personally supervise the arrest of the cocaine cops then faced the cameras holding up the badges telling the city that the badge numbers will never be used again forever. It is a leadership paradigm that others wish they had thought of first.Of course, his detractors will call it grandstanding.If they know so much, how come they never got to be top cop of Boston, NYPD or LAPD?

I agree with the above review
The authors of this book are truely using this "text" as a platform to preach their ideals.The authors about how unfair the U.S. system is and how it is going to change to conform to their views (this will never happen)is sickening.
Not as textbook, but a liberal manifesto
As a Criminal Justice instructor who has reviewed this text (and almost had to use it) I cannot recommend this book.It portends to be a book about solutions, when in fact it essentially attacks every aspect of policing and the criminal justice system as it exists today, and the only solutions it provides are from the left to far left.There is no balance of opinion, no counter-point, and absolutely no effort on the part of the authors to inform students that they are in fact only getting one side of the issue.Far too often do I see this approach by liberal writers and educators: attempting to pass off their out of the mainstream ideas as fact.College is a marketplace of ideas, discussion, and debate.However, this book turns the debate into a one sided discussion on how awful and wholly without merit the current system is.I am not one as a CJ educator that believes we are to be cheerleaders for law enforcement.However, we do need to present the good with the bad, and this book would do nothing but discourage would-be law enforcement professionals.If the goal is to make such persons believe the profession they are about to enter into is completely corrupt and without merit, this is the "test" to use.If forced to use this book, I would suggest supplementing it with articles or texts that offer a counterpoint.That is, if you are interested in giving your students both sides of the issue - which I believe we as educators are charged to do, not just simply indoctrinate them with the opinions of those with whom you might agree.This book is nothing more than an attempt to indoctrinate, not foster intelligent debate and discussion on the topics contained therein. A Brilliantly Reasoned Critique of the American Prison System
In "Are Prisons Obsolete?", Professor Davis provides a clear and cogent argument that prisons not only are obsolete but that they have always been and always will be ineffectual for any purpose other than to oppress an unfairly disfavored class of people.
Why Prisons Aren't About Justice
This book, while providing historical context, is not overly academic and is very readable. Davis presents some startling facts about the prison as a replacement for the plantation and about the intrinsic racism of capital punishment.
theory heavy; not a good intro to prison issues
This may just be the way I approach prison issues, but I believe that the current crisis in U.S. prisons -- overincarceration, privitization, horrific health problems, racism, inadequate educational programs -- do not necessarily need a wide historical analysis to call attention to themselves. I am, like Davis, a socialist, but I think the mess that is the prison industrial complex can be described in a way that will make liberals, not just radicals, agree that the system needs to change right away -- and I think that this is more important than focusing on the more abstract idea of prison abolition. When I heard her speak at a prisoner conference last year, she focused on the difference between being a prison reformer and a prison abolitionist: a difference that is addressed in this work. This book as a whole is an argument for prison abolition. But prison reform is more urgent, and more possible. I find it hard to focus on her arguments as a result.

Excellent introduction for security new comers.
The chapter on Crime Prevention by Environmental Design was worth the price of the book.Technical coverage of various physical design features (CCTV, alarms, lighting, etc) were sufficient.The book is an excellent reference for security new comers.I personally would like to see more specific treatment on various security scenarios such as warehouse, commercial buildings, etc.In general, I consider this a good buy.

Good introduction and reference to the subject
I'm not an expert in physical security--I like to think of myself in an expert in information security.An understanding of physical security topics is essential for an Infosec consultant, but consultants and CISSP test candidates looking for information on this subject don't really know where to turn.Read more

Some Serious Omissions in the First Edition
"Homeland Security: A Complete Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Surviving Terrorism", contains two chapters addressing the Islamic aspects of the current era of terrorism and jihad activity: Chapter 4, "The Mind of the Terrorist: Why They Hate Us", and Chapter 5, "Al-Qaida and Other Islamic Extremist Groups: Understanding Fanaticism in the Name of Religion". Each chapter is complimented with endnotes (29 for Chapter 4, and 19 for Chapter 5) and the absence of a bibliography suggests that the endnotes comprise the primary sources for each chapter.There are no Islamic sources.
A must read for everyone concerned with National Security!!!
Homeland Security (The Mcgraw-Hill Homeland Security Series) by Mark Sauter and James Carafano is an all encompassing work that is a must for students and Homeland Security professionals alike.It is a comprehensive account of the evolution of Homeland Security, and the cornerstone text for a series of our continuing education courses.

True Blue Shows Police Officers as Humans and Heroes!

A Mixed Bag
Like many story collections, this one is truly a mixed bag. Among the highlights are some delightfully funny annecdotes of crimes gone wrong and some heartwarming stories of police at their very best. However, there are also stories that are criminally mundane, and others so syrupy sweet they border on offensive. The extensive section of 9/11 stories is overkill. There is little there that hasn't already been said many times over, with the common theme being that we owe a debt of gratitude to those gave the ultimate service to their country that day. A noble point, but one that has been made repeatedly. Sutton offers nothing new about 9/11, its heroes or its victims.
