5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading For New Or Future Cops
I am a graduate of a criminal justice program and was recently was hired by a small city department and expect to head off to the academy soon. I came across this book and decided to buy a copy to further prepare myself for the job. Given my interest in law enforcement I found it very interesting and I think it will be a good preparation for both what I will learn "hands-on" at the academy and what I will actually face as a police officer. Each chapter talks about a part of the police officer's job like responding to alarms, filing reports, and dealing with the community. A large section of the book is dedicated to traffic stops and related situations, such as searches, sobriety tests, etc., which I thought was good because it is what a lot of officers do in most parts of the country. For each topic, there are several scenarios with questions asking what you would do. Theses are probably meant for a criminal justice class with others to discuss answers with, but even on my own I thought they were fun to read and a way of envisioning what I would do the first time I face something similar. Overall, I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to be or is going to be a police officer. It offers a good look at what situations officers really face and the scenarios even give you a preview of the important decisions officers have to make every day.

I'm up to page 200 and while I usually wait for the end of any book to write a review, I felt compelled to write one now.-----------
5-0 out of 5 stars Recognize Deceptive Signals in Speech & Body Language
This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Principles Of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation
Being a Stan Walters devotee I was pleased to find yet another rivetting publication by the guru of kinesics. Stans writing is refreshing and makes for interesting reading. The content itself is on the button. Excellent reference material for those in the business of detecting deception. I integrated the techniques described by Stan Walters with Statement Analysis techniques and find that I am now far more successful at what I do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible editing, but there isn't much else out there to use ....
Horrible editing that SHOULD embarrass the company.Watch out for the typos and some logic errors, but there isn't much else out there to help you so ... this book is probably your only choice.Don't buy it, just use the copy from your local library or the copy at Barnes & Nobles / Walden's so you don't have to waste your money on it.Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get this book for the new ICE test.....not the TEA book!
I took this test in Philly a few monts ago and passed!I owe my passing to this book.I would suggest you study the that came with the packet. The math was like that, but much harder. Review the math in the arco book. The logical reaoning was very easy (because I read the logicals in this book and thought they were tough! The math was the hards, so just study the book. The last section of the exam is very easy...grammar and spelling.Use this book and good luck@

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Prep
I just took the test today and I wanted to write this while it was still fresh in my mind. This is a very good book to prepare you for the exam if you have a pretty strong math and reading background. If this is so, this is the only book you will need but be careful of the typos. There were many typos and when they appeared in the math section, they obviously create real serious problems. My advice, if you don't have a strong background like me, is to buy this and the Learning Express Book. Read my review on that book as well. GOOD LUCK! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clean, Concise, Competent
A lot of books on terrorism response have been written by 'experts'; fine folks who understand the theory, but in reality lack the practical experience. This book is NOT one those.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Text with Great Application for Field Response
After having to climb through so many books looking for the information I required to understand the issues and response to terrorism I came across Understanding Terrorism by Maniscalco & Christen. What a relief to find a comprehensive, cohesive and no nonsense book.5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Common Sense Presentation
The authors of Understanding Terrorism have done a great job with presenting complex and difficult material in a manner that is easy for all responders to understand.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A deeply dishonest book by an of-so-trendy academic
This book is about the "broken windows" model of policing, which was put into action by Bill Bratton in New York City.Despite the fact that the crime rate in New York City has plummetted after this new style of policing was put into effect, Professor Harcourt hates broken windows policing. He tries to get you to agree with him by making two arguments, which contradict one another.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volume demonstrates why idiots so often disregard academics
B. Harcourt is an expert who debunks myths in law enforcement. His findings are against common sense and may sound ridiculous to readers (and policymakers alike) with an IQ below 70, yet he has a point and makes it in a clear and well written style. Unlike superficial studies, his book goes through substantial analyses and details, which are necessary to document the case he makes. A recommended reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars DISPELLS the MYTHS ASSOCIATED with the CURRENT DOCTRINE ...
This work may be best suited for students of Criminology who are required to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in conducting their own research somewhere along the continuum from Community Oriented Policing to Intelligence Led Policing. The highly academic style is replete with methodical concerns, including the value of empirical evidence, and research jargon such as regression analysis, correlation of variables, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Must-Read
Like the 9/11 Commission Report and books such as Imperial Hubris, Defeating the Jihadists is another must-read for anyone wants to better understand the threat a terrorism and just how our government may be mishandling the entire situation. Two chapters in particular stood out for me:Chapter 4:A Country-by-Country Approach and Chapter 5: Partnering with the Islamic World.Chapters 4 lays out in detail the conditions in five nations (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan and Iraq) in which terrorists, or as the authors call them "jihadists," are seeking to replace existing governments or have already succeeded in installing a fundamentalist regime.Of particular importance, I think, is the discussion of Pakistan (a nuclear country) and the failed policy in Iraq. Chapter 5 discusses how we can partner with Islamic countries to promote ideas like democracy, civil liberties, nonviolence, and protection of noncombatants. This is a dry volume, but that doesn't reduce its importance.Every library in America should have a copy of this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
The Master The Police Officer Exam does an excellent job.The tests are very helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars In a class of its own
I closely scrutinized a half dozen cop test prep books and purchased another besides this one. 'Master the Police Officer Exam' is significantly above the others. Its greatest strength is that it seems to be written by someone who knows specifically about cop tests- not just tests in general. There is above and beyond detailed information not just on the many aspects and types of written exams, but also the different video tests. In addition, its many practice tests are authentic and are from different sources (NYPD and NCJOSI). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If only our government had listened...
This book first came out in the mid-1990s. If only the U.S. government had listened to the Israelis and the author, who increasingly had warned the U.S., or tried to, of the growing jihadist threat, not just around the world, but also inside the U.S (the Israelis had known of Islamic terrorists in places like Oklahoma city, etc. in the 1990s). At one point in this book, the author states that the threat is growing and "it is only a matter of time before they strike the United States, from within". Very true, unfortunately. This book costs less than $ 20, and yet, the CIA could have learned more from it than the billions they spend every year "monitoring" terrorists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Volume Deserves Ten Stars
As you read this book, you will appreciate just how prescient Benjamin Netanyahu was. There is no doubt that Netenyahu's theses, penned in 1995, now inform the War on Terror, which began taking shape only after the attacks of September 11, 2001. There are no wasted words in this slim volume. Yet, it is comprehensive with respect to the subject of radical Islamic militarism. The author provides a modern history of terrorism, and dissects with a sharp scalpel the errors of Israeli and Western governments that tried, and failed, to tame the forces of terrorism through appeasement. If there is any bright side to the horrors emanating from the failed Oslo accords it is that they illustrate just how NOT to fight terrorism. Netanyahu has a solid grasp of history and international relations. He prescribes our next steps and explains how to defeat terrorism. He is clear-eyed and sober.I hope the leaders of the world will pay heed to his words.

3-0 out of 5 stars In depth collection of essays on U.S. presidency
The Presidency and the Political Stream is a collection of twenty essays edited by Michael Nelson, who is a professor at Rhodes College. Each chapter explores a different aspect of the relationship between the presidency and the U.S. political system. This book is recommended to serious scholars of the U.S. presidency.

5-0 out of 5 stars It looks boring, but is isn't
This is a collection of essays on the presidency. It doesn't look like an interesting book, but many of the pieces are in fact quite interesting. The book covers many different aspects of the presidency, and one can learn a lot merely by reading this book. Although it is definitely an academic book, it is not so dry that it cannot be read by those that are not involved with academics.

I met Chris recently at a college reunion.I had not known him in college, but when I saw that someone from our small rural liberal arts college would discuss being on the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and more, I was intrigued. His tales were intriguing and I ordered up the book.Better still! For clearly this is a product of much thought, of much living even, and here is someone who feels like one of us doing things quite amazing, exciting, frightening, and sometimes very deflating. His prose is great, sometimes poetic. He weaves a tale in a wonderful way...as when his tale of his first killing, a New Hampshire deer, shifts brilliantly into a key moment in his role as a sniper. His reflectiveness is what grabbed me, as he has much depth of thought to add to some stark tales.I have read this book while walking, late into the night, and when I really should have been doing other things. And this despite some clear breaks between parts of the book.A rare gem.Wish I had known Chris better in college!

5-0 out of 5 stars Front row seating...
This book was awesome, and the whole time I was reading it, I felt as though I was journeying right along beside Chris. A definite must-read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could use some "meat"
This is an interesting read and Chris does mention several high profile incidents but it would have been better as a "this is my life book" as opposed to any real 'meat' but I don't think it would have done as well if he had so--hat's off....

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have for investigators
For those who don't know the name, Rossmo is the detective / mathematician whose pioneering work on criminal profiling in Canada has helped re-shape the way investigators worldwide track down serial offenders. By mathematically studying the location and distribution of crimes, Rossmo developed a way of pinpointing the most likely location of the offender's home base. This book explains his work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ground breaking and well researched
This book is a real innovation in the field of crime research. The area of criminal profiling is populated by no shortage of Walter Mittys with no empirical grounding, so is it refreshing to find a text that cements the theories of this complex and fascinating area with empirical analysis of real cases. The text is well written and opens up a new area of criminal behaviour analysis to students and police officers alike. This book will undoubtedly become a key text in the field of criminal profiling and a welcome replacement to the long list of dull criminal psychology books that do not tell you anything useful, because the ivory tower authors have no practical experience.
