4-0 out of 5 stars Still good in 2005
I used this book to prepare for the SFPD examination one week in advance. The question types outlined in the book were exactly the same type of questions in the examination.Knowing what kind of questions to expect and how to handle them definitely helped me pass the test. The book also has some interesting information about a career in law enforcement. My only qualm with the book was that the questions themselves were not challenging enough. The SFPD exam had more questions that the sample tests of the book. The SFPD exam questions were also a bit more difficult. There is a 2nd edition of this book out.I haven't had the chance to look at it but it seems that it is cheaper and may be a better preparation tool than the 1st edition.Overall a good study guide even though it was published in 1996.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where do they get this stuff???
I bought this book to review for the police exam and completely failed! The examples in the book didn't look anything like the questions in the actual exam.I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about, but this can't be the book that they're claiming to be good.It was a total waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of On-scene guide for crisis negotiators
Good 1st book to read on those wanting to be Negotiators in the Law Enforcement field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition To The Field
Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to providetechniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume isarranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part ofevery negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important pointsabout this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faceddaily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignoredin many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition, the entire book is an interesting read. His account of his involvement atRuby Ridge is fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone involvedin the field, police commanders and anyone interested in crisisintervention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Police Sergeant Examination Preparation Guide
I used this book to prepare for the sergeants exam. I did not have long to prepare (A couple of weeks), and it helped me to achieve a strong score on both the written and the oral tests. I would suggest you buy this book. It is one of the reasons I'm a sergeant today!

I bought the book on Feb 3 and received it on Feb 24. Other than that everything was great. Book was great. Anet

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.
I found this book to be very useful while studying for the Police Sergeant examination. While I did not use the written test section, the section on supervisory theory was useful. However, the oral board section was what made this book an essential part of my study materials. Nowhere else did I find so much useful material on oral boards in one place. I credit this book with helping me attain the high score that I got. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for the Library of both Professional and Layman
The Executive Protection Professional's Manual is an excellent read both for those involved in the profession and those of us who have been on the periferal of such work. Dr. Holder's unique perspective may stem from his extensive martial arts training, his considerable life experience, or analysis of human behavior.5-0 out of 5 stars EPP from the worlds best!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellant
I wanted to prepare as much as possible when it comes to becoming a cop. I had got this book because I wanted to learn more and know what I would be getting in an exam. When I flipped through this manual I was in total shock. I have never seen or read so much detailed information in my life. You can't go wrong with this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars VERY Informative
The best thing that you can do for yourself is find out what is on the test that you'll be taking. I used this book to study and the test i took couldn't have been further from the topics discussed in this book. It is a great way to get yourself to study better and think more bout the answers you give.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good preparation - even more than necessary
I used this book to prepare for the LAPD application process, and while the practice questions are great in getting you in the cop-mindset, many of them are much more detailed and police-oriented than the real thing. There's a good section that gets you ready for the oral interview, though, which adds value to the book. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Dull
I am a Criminology and Criminal Justice student finishing my sophomore year this month. I have taken 7 different CCJ classes so far, and this textbook ranks among the most dry, dull, and boring CCJ textbooks I have ever had the misfortune to read. Even my Criminal Law text was better than this book was.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dry, yet informative.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Start
I am a former Army intelligence officer and I think that this was a good first cut at the topic.I was enrolled in a Homeland Security class that used this text.We studied the system and response of DHS and then the following week Katrina hit followed by Rita. What should have happened and what actually happened leave much to be fixed. The description of terrorism was so lacking that the instructor allowed me to teach the class. The information on chemical and biological agents looked like it came out of a Hazmat class manual. To be a better book it needs to be updated and revised.FEMA has free online classes which the authors should consider in their update. This book was great as no other book attempted to put together the area of homeland security under the new DHS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor
This is an excellent book talking about the policies, organization, and functions of the Department of Homeland Security. The author's provide an historical overview of the terrorist threat which is concise and highlights the September 11 timeline. The life cycle of emergency managment is presented by introducing several case studies which provide incite into failures of preparedness and response to terrorist incidents worldwide. The importance of communications and technology is discussed to help prevent and deter terrorism in security organizations. It is a book that everyone in security management should read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The dynamic that is Homeland Security
Introduction to Homeland Security provides a comprehensive view of the dynamics of homeland security in the United States from the view of experienced emergency management facilitators. This is accomplished by providing a historical overview of the terrorist threat which culminates with the September 11th terrorist attacks and thereafter the various legislative, executive orders and organizational actions which lead to the largest re-organization of the federal government in recent history which results in the formation and creation of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).An in-depth discussion and view of the pre-Katrina DHS are provided with applicable questions regarding the functionality and capabilities of this new department.Homeland security hazards are discussed with emphasis also placed on the safety and security of various aspects of the infrastructure of our society. The text also discusses the addition of prevention to the comprehensive emergency management life cycle of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The book concludes with a discussion of the importance of effective communications with special emphasis placed on risk communications; the various types of technology being employed and various technology players and their activities; and, provides a discussion of the future of homeland security.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power and corruption with a bullet
Having read this book was quite more of an eye opener than I would have liked to think in regards to what takes place in the hip-hop realm. It is quite unfortunate to read about what goes on with many of the hip-hop artists from an insider and investigator's point of view. The self-perpetuating, and often self-fulfilling lethality of hip-hop is something one could only hope would one day cease to exist. The corruption within the police force...I suppose when one can genetically remove human nature then this could end that.
4-0 out of 5 stars NYPD Blue in a book
Parker is a true character, and he and Diehl really make this book into a conversation between him and me (or you, when you read it). I appreciate the attention lavished on the old-school (Jay bookends the story) and the explanation of the continental divide that started in the 90s.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, not definitive
Unlike one of the other previous reviewers, though I am generally a conservative, I would agree with this book's primary conclusion: the NRA has had a disproportionate impact on the politics of gun control.
1-0 out of 5 stars Politics of Gun Control - Another liberal hatchet job
I read this book because I was required to in College. It is painfully, obvious that it was written from a predetermined conclusion. The history of the NRA is especially vicious. The author chastises the NRA at several points for the NRA early support by Government by subsidies, use of Nat'l parks to train WWII soldiers how to shoot, etc. The author essential argument that anyone that has ever received support from Gov't has duty not to ever to oppose the government in anything. In the beginning he points out that this book he will not examine gun control polices in foreign countries, yet on several instances he cites them (Canada for instance) to make his point, but nevertheless totally neglects gun control failures such as England and Austrailia (See London Times 1/16/2000 for details on this) . He quickly glosses over concealed weapon laws citing statistics showimng their failure, when a number of policy studies have concluded the opposite that Concealed weapon laws do in fact reduce crime. If you want one-sided reading of gun control this is your best bet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not For Those Who Have Already Made Up Their Minds
I wonder if the reader from Glen Ellen CA and I read the same book? That review seemed to my mind an excellent example of tediously shaving facts to fit one's predilections- much more so than the actual work in question.Read more
