5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing hypothesis
This is certainly a worth-reading book. Its application of Durkheim's and Merton's anomie theory to the crime dynamics of American society is tightly reasoned and very appealing. The thesis that unusually high crime rates inthe US are the dark side of the success promoted by the American ethosseems to account for many of the observed facts. The book follows anexcellent logical development and provides appealing explanations for theetiology of the main American nightmare. Unfortunately, it lacks a trulycomparative perspective, since it practically ignores crime in theunderdeveloped countries. Compariong with Western Europe is hardly enough. And the last ten pages, where the authors provide their recipe forcombatting crime, are, to say the least disappointing. By proposing actionswhich are obviously non-viable, the authors transform their whole argumentinto an interesting, even fascinating, but useless academic exercise. Onefinal point: The tendency of the authors to add "politicalcorrectness" to citations is unforgivable. What an author saidanywhere between 150 and 80 years ago, should be cited as he/she wrote. Thus, in page 105, the introduction of a"her" in a citation ofMarx is unnecessary and smacks of opportunism. The same can be said of thecitation of James Truslow Adams in page 106, where the authors introduce a "and women". And before I forget, the table on page 103 placesAustralia and New Zealand low in homicide but also low on decommodification(monstruous word!), whereas Finland is higher in decommodification than theUK, but also higher in homicide. Don't these contradictions fatally weakenthe argument of this chapter?

5-0 out of 5 stars How True It Is
I was privileged to have Dr. Rosenfeld as a professor while majoring in criminology.I found his course and his research fascinating. This book is very well written and an interesting theory.Having recently become apublic defender representing indigents charged with felony offenses, Dr.Rosenfeld's theory is right on the mark.American crime is a seriousproblem, with its roots deep in american culture and expectations.Ihighly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the trueroots of american crime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting application of Anomie theory
This was a textbook in my university criminology class, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It applies the theory of anomic strain to the United States as a whole and proposes that it is the cause for crime and deviance. Many ofthe ideas and themes presented in it ring true with sentiments of Americanstoday, with the gap between the upper and lower class growing larger andlarger. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New Twist on the Simpson Case
Most everyone knows the details of the Simpson case and all the "major" books written about it.This one easily got lost in the shuffle.William Dear spent years researching the crimes, the victims and the suspect (Simpson) and his family. His book is well written, clear and concise. He offers up a new suspect, one never previously discussed before. His supporting evidence is good and it will definitely give you food for thought and pause about what you think you know about the Simpson case.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ear Witness
I am a 72-year old white woman who lived on Gorham Street in June, 1994, it being the first cottage you would pass when walking West from the Mezzaluna Restaurant. If you were to go by there now you would see that the five little cottages which once occupied a large corner lot have been replaced by a huge, ugly condominium.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Bundy Murders
Having just completed the book itself and having read or re-read the negative reviews here, I have to say that the absence of detailed criticism is not surprising.Examples are not given of mis-statements of fact or of specific instances of silly reasoning, and there is a good reason for this:the book does not have such flaws. Nor is there any mention in such reviews of specific evidence against O.J. Simpson which Dear neglects to address (and he does wrtie about the cuts to the outside of the O.J. Simpson's left hand in the book).

2-0 out of 5 stars Long Vehicle - Please Do NOT Pass
Unfortunately, Wadsworth editors allowed Andrew Karmen to turn what could have been a nippy little sports car into a 14-wheeler.The 370+ pages could have been edited to 200 had an editor removed the padding.Insteadof zipping along, readers have to drag both themselves and an articulatedtruckful of words behind them.No verb is left without an adverb andsynonym, no noun without an adjective and a thesaurus-full of alternatives, and no idea passes without a repetitive redundancy. Consider, just as anexample, the "media."No, you are not smart enough to know whatthe media are;Andrew spells it all out- "The news media -newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations -deserve...." (page 25)Gee, thanks, Andrew,I really needed thatpointed out to me! I won't bother with more.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Modern Political Philosopher
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) wrote "Leviathan" in 1651, it was his most important philosophical work.I think you should know something of Hobbes to understand how his thinking was influenced by his experiences. He was born 2 months prematurely on the day the Spanish Armada approaches the English coast. His mother's fear of invasion caused the premature birth.Hobbes remarked late in life, "his mother brought forth twins-myself and fear."Fear seems to be Hobbes life long companion and the key passion in his political system, which uses human passions as its foundation. He was a child prodigy reading Latin and Greek at the age of six years old.At fifteen, he entered Oxford University and hated his educational experience there. He thought the curriculum was too immersed in the ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle. He called them "erroneous doctrines," and throughout his life he railed against English universities for there stodgy curriculum.
3-0 out of 5 stars Who should read this?
It's a bit difficult to know who to recommend this book to.It's not that it's a bad book - it isn't - rather that it contains almost exactly the same arguments as Leviathan, only shorter and in less detail.Consequently they are more convincing in Leviathan than here, and I have to recommend Leviathan instead of this.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A returning student's review
This book was extremely enlightening and engrossing. It reveals many startling details about an assassination that in the public's mind is an open and shut case. This book will make you re-examine what you think you know about the murder of Robert F. Kennedy. It is a fascinating and disturbing look into the mishandling of the investigation as well as the trial of Sirhan Sirhan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surely Surly Sirhan
Klaber stands alone in his remarkable attention to detail and his insightful intuition as he dissects Sirhan, the assassination and all the people and events surrounding it.Investigative journalism at its finest; with no sides taken, no leaf unturned/unflipped/unanalyzed and certainly no minds unchallenged.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read

2-0 out of 5 stars Good For A Time
I don't always give low ratings. However, this book is long overdue a 2nd edition, and as it stands, it should not be relied upon as a "state of the art" book on childrens' eyewitness testimony.
5-0 out of 5 stars Data-driven and ethical forensic work
An excellent guide to the state of current knowledge about memory, suggestibility, and unsuitable vs. suitable information-eliciting techniques, with regard to children's testimony. This book is distinguished from others on the same topic by the scientific reputations of the editors and chapter authors, as well as the cautious approach.Fits in very well with current Supreme Court strictures on the admissibility of expert/science based testimony---Daubert, Joiner, & Kumho decisions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book in my libarary
This is the most important non-legal book in my library. Anyone who needs to evaluate the credibility of a child's statement should read this book. Even-handed in its approach, it points out those factors mostimportant to consider when assessing a child's accusations. ... Read more
