5-0 out of 5 stars Real History
When Ronald Radosh and Joyce Milton began the research for this book, many people across the political spectrum became uncomfortable. That is because this is an actual work of history, rather than an ideological screed masquerading as history.Radosh and Milton have been faithful to the historian's profession:they have interviewed, they have researched, and they have made an honest, ethical attempt to answer the crucial historical question:"What really happened?"
4-0 out of 5 stars Stop apologizing, start reading
The Rosenberg case has faded with time and turned into a diffuse urban legend.Facts are rarely possessed by those who are most vehement about the case. This book puts an end to the hodge-podge of information that led some people to believe the Rosenbergs were innocents framed by the government. The truth is that they were spies, they were communists, and they engaged in treason. The Soviets would have acquired The Bomb with or without the Rosenbergs. That doesn't mitigate their guilt for hastening the information to our enemy. The Rosenbergs weren't tried for what they believed. They were tried for what they did.And they were killed for what they did not do--which was recant.Sworn communists, they chose death instead of life.A selfish, stupid choice that placed a worthless ideology over the needs of their two young children, who have written worthwhile books about growing up as orphans of two of the most infamous American traitors. This book ends the speculation that they were innocent, that they had no chance to save their lives by recanting. Here are the latest facts and the fullest account of a chapter in American history that continues to be a vital flashpoint for people on either side of the political spectrum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read both this book and The Brother by Sam Roberts
The Radosh book concerning the Rosenberg case is a much fuller and more comprehensive treatment of the case than is the more recent book, The Brother, by Sam Roberts. The Brother is based on the current recollections of Ethel Rosenberg's brother David Greenglass who fingered both Ethel and Julius in testimony.David also served a number of years for espionage, himself, as part of same case.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Serious Omissions in the First Edition
"Homeland Security: A Complete Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Surviving Terrorism", contains two chapters addressing the Islamic aspects of the current era of terrorism and jihad activity: Chapter 4, "The Mind of the Terrorist: Why They Hate Us", and Chapter 5, "Al-Qaida and Other Islamic Extremist Groups: Understanding Fanaticism in the Name of Religion". Each chapter is complimented with endnotes (29 for Chapter 4, and 19 for Chapter 5) and the absence of a bibliography suggests that the endnotes comprise the primary sources for each chapter. There are no Islamic sources.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not as convincing as others.
Having already read Dan T. Carter's masterful Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South, I already knew the story of the Scottsboro boys and the miscarriage of justice that happened to them. I hoped to get more insight with this book. Unfortunately, its unclear style got in the way. I would guess that someone who was unaware of this case might love this book--but if you are looking for more than narrative, get Carter's book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A forgotten embarassment
One of the more controversial events of the 1930's took place near Paint Rock, Alabama when nine Negro youths were arrested for the rape of two white women on a freight train. The nine were quickly tried and found guilty. Before the death penalty could be administered, appeals were filed with the aid of the US Communist Party.Thence ensued a lengthy series of trials and appeals that lasted from 1931 until well into the forties. It was a legal battle between White and Black as well as North and South with the battlefield always under the control of the White Southerners.Today it is an incident lergely forgotten by succeeding generations.Yet it is an excellent example of the the state of race relations in the South (not that there are too many surprises there), the role of moderate judges in reconciling racial injustice, the influence of the Communist/Socialist Parties in the 1930's as well as a number of other splinter stories.Therein lies the excellence of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!!
I started reading this book with very little knowledge about the Scottsboro incident. This book does an amazing job of portraying the different sides to this tragic story. The chapters are short enough for those of us with short attention spans. However, each chapter grips you with why those particular people feel and think the way they do.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for criminal procedure.
This supplement is a must.It will save you time and energy. Bloom and Brodin give clean definitions for 4th amendment, 5th, and 6th. A friend of mine who passed the July 05 CA Bar (on the first attempt), used this book as her sole preparation for criminal procedure essay section. The checklist located in the appendix will ensure that you will not miss any issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great supplement but bad teacher
I just used this book to help me study for my CrimPro exam.I thought it was very, very helpful, but only because I had read my casebook and attended class all semester.Unlike Glannon's CivPro E&E (which is a MUST-BUY for any 1L), this book would not have been valuable if I had opened it during the semester; it was only valuable before my exam as a review. It does not provide insight into why the Supreme Court decided certain things; it simply gives us the rules the Court spat out with a miniscule amount of justification, if any.Your casebook and professor would likely discuss the reasons why the Court decided the way it did and why the concurring or dissenting justices reasoned the way they did.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful study aid
This book was a real disappointment compared to others in the examples and explanations series. Most of the examples were simply cases that if you had studied at all you would already know.If you didn't bother to do the reading for your class, then maybe it would be helpful. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In 1979, Lesra, a 16-year-old African American boy from an impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood, befriended three thirtysomething Canadians in the borough on business. The boy, whom the Canadians flew to Toronto to visit them, had led a life so far from the comforts of nature that he stumbled trying to walking on a lawn. Charmed by the exuberant and obviously intelligent Lesra (Lazarus), and aware that without decent health care, a safe environment, or an education he would have little or no hope of success in his dangerous neighborhood, this exceptional group of people invited him to live with and be educated by them. Lesra thrived under their watch--but the story of Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Story ...Told Not So Well
I really enjoyed the Ruber Carter biography The 16th Round. Carter is an amazing writer and he has an amazing life story. I figured this book would be sort of a follow up to his book taking us from incarceration in the end of 16th Round to freedom in Lazarus...
3-0 out of 5 stars Fair treatment of two great stories
This book is not as well-written as some of the other books out there, but the stories it tackles are certainly interesting.
4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Lives
Two stories in one book, the first part about a young man named Lesra (short for Lazarus) and then the full history of Rubin Carter known as the Hurricane, a black American framed for a crime he never committed and wrongfully imprisoned.A third influence which shadows both stories is a group of people known as the Canadians, their motivations are not revealed to the reader yet without the actions taken by these Canadians the stories with happy endings told in this book would not have been possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars a succinct introduction
First off, I'm not a lawyer. I needed a book on whitecollar crime in US and I had to search intensively. For one reason or another the books on the market and in law libraries are for US lawyers which means that you don't find a full treatise on the subject but starting points that you have to develop by yourself. This book is the best I could find in an atrophic market. So if you are a novice don't expect very much but a short introduction on theoretical concept. One question I had in mind was how harsh was the punishment for such crimes and how precise and effective was the contour of the crime. Well, the answer is not here. If I had to rely on this book for an anwer I can infer that there is some punishment in theory for a vague crime. Unless you know well and by heart the US Sentencing guidelines and the rest of the US crime law, you end up with more questions than answers. It's more on the elements of the crime (willfulness, mens rea, a scheme to defraud etc.) than on the actual behavior the laws are meant to cope with. So read this book and be ready to do your own research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good fast read was better than a dense textbook.
I don't have the opportunity to take a law class on this topic, so I bought the nutshell. This was a very interesting read, just hitting the basics, and didn't take too much time out of my study schedule.Highly reccommend if you think you are interested in this type of law but don'thave time /opportunity to take the class. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I find it interesting
People who complain about the truth never have any facts to back it up. Womnder why? Those Facts do not exist. If the David Barrett report is ever realeased...Hillary and Bill will be in line for a prison term.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lazy Clip Job
Well of course this is biased nonsense. What did you expect? That's not my trouble with this book, as I expect nothing less from Rush's little brother. What did depress me was how lazily thrown together it was, like maybe Rush had a few of his interns dig up some Washington Times articles for David to weave together into a partisan rant. Also a tad distressing was the lack of any sort of historical perspective, on say what Ed Meese got up to let alone Nixon's crook Mitchell. (Though again this is standard party trick of right wing hacks so no surprise.) I am vaguely interested in whether David actually believes this stuff, as "The Legacy of Corruption" has the whiff of utter cynicism and making a buck off the rubes...

A fascinating survey of techniques used by consumers to defraud business; a reverse of most fraud books.Frauds identified range from acts that are unethical (e.g. is it really fraud to lie to a used car salesman? Negotiate price based on dealer financing, then switch to cash ......) to the undoubtedly criminal (e.g. false insurance claims).

5-0 out of 5 stars Dressler is a fantastic presenter
Dressler presents Criminal Procedure (and Criminal Law in his other CD set) with style and an obvious interest in the subject.I have listened to a number of other CD sets on various subjects in the law and this one ranks at the top (along side Mary Cheh's Con Law and Finz' Torts.)I recommend this for law school, bar review, and practioners looking for a nutshell account of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Careful, unbiased review of the evidence
There is nothing casual about this book's consideration of racial bias in the criminal justice system. The authors offer a very careful, balanced and thorough evaluation of racial bias in the various stages of the arrest, sentencing, incarceration, etc. based on a comprehensive consideration of the evidence from numerous studies. What is so striking about this study is that the authors are able to describe this evidence in a very understandable way that should be accessible to the general public. They find that while some areas of the criminal justice system are racial discriminatory, others are not. An excellent book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative - YES; balanced and unbiased - NO!
I purchased this book as recommended supplementary reading for a college level criminal justice course. The book is advertised as "Comprehensive and balanced" and "uniquely unbiased" on the back cover.I was hoping for a book that honestly and objectively presented both sides of the debate regarding race and crime.I am not qualified to debate the accuracy of the data presented, or to argue that the authors are incorrect in their charges of discrimination in the criminal justice system. However, the book adamantly asserts that discrimination is responsible for the disparity between races in the crime data and casually dismisses opposing arguments. The authors presentation is neither balanced or unbiased. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Put This Book Down!
The story told within the pages of this book is one of the most compelling stories I have ever read.I could not put this book down!It reads like an episode of 48 Hours Mystery.Dean Kuipers starts off by telling you basically what happened on Labor Day weekend, 2001. Then goes back in time and not only fills you in on the history of the two main characters, Tom and Rollie, but also introduces you to a myriad of other very interesting people, all very real with their own stories to tell. Not only that, it also gives you an over view of just about every aspect of the movement to legalize cannabis, especially as it relates to the state of Michigan. His retelling of these events is exceptional, considering he culled all the information from interviews and documents collected over a 4-year period.
5-0 out of 5 stars Martyrs Who Should Never Have Been
It isn't explicitly in the Bill of Rights, but it ought to be: The Right to Be Let Alone. The story of two martyrs who died pursuing this right is told in _Burning Rainbow Farm: How a Stoner Utopia Went Up in Smoke_ (Bloomsbury) by Dean Kuipers. The story of Tom Crosslin and his partner Rollie Rohm never got all the attention it deserved, since the dramatic climax happened on the Labor Day weekend just before 9/11.Kuipers brings it back, a detailed and intelligent look at the way the War on Drugs has been waged within our borders. You don't have to be in favor of legalization of drugs or even decriminalization of marijuana to realize that this sad battle which reflects badly on all participants never should have happened.
5-0 out of 5 stars Up in Smoke: Kuipers Explores a Utopia Gone to Pot
Surrounded by forces in blue, and most every other color of uniform, Rainbow Farm blazed in a fury of flames while guns were trained on the two owners as they emerged: first, Tom Crosslin, 46, then his much younger lover, Rolland "Rollie" Rohm, 28. Crosslin was shot through the forehead by a FBI sharpshooter. Rohm emerged into the open field 12 hours later and, after setting fire to the farmhouse where he had lived with Crosslin since the early 90s, was hit by the bullet of a Michigan State Police sharpshooter. The bullet first split the butt of Rohm's rifle before entering his chest, splattering him with blood but leaving him on the ground still alive. Or so some say. After that, questions arise, still unanswered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail is Important
Attention to detail is important in almost all areas of endeavor, but especially so in forensic science. This book violates that fundamental in the first chapter. In describing the trial of Theodore Robert Bundy for the Chi Omega Sorority murders, it refers to the testimony of a certain forensic odontologist, and says that as a result of the testimony of the forensic odonotologist, Bundy was executed. This is incorrect.Bundy was not executed for the Chi Omega murders, but for the subsequent murder of a young girl.Forensic science figured prominently in that conviction also, but it was microanalysis and shoetrack comparison, not forensic odontology, that was instrumental in sending Bundy to the electric chair.
