5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful indictment of the death penalty in America
This book, written by a Catholic nun, is a powerful indictment of the death penalty in America. She describes in vivid detail her role as "spiritual adviser" to two death row inmates, and in graphic detail, describes their deaths at the hands of the state.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Dead Man Walking
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth considering
Sister Helen's case is a highly serious and convincing one, and she has bolstered it by the results of detailed and careful investigations which she has incorporated on top of her experience as a spiritual adviser to delinquents, whose executions she watched in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading For New Or Future Cops
I am a graduate of a criminal justice program and was recently was hired by a small city department and expect to head off to the academy soon. I came across this book and decided to buy a copy to further prepare myself for the job. Given my interest in law enforcement I found it very interesting and I think it will be a good preparation for both what I will learn "hands-on" at the academy and what I will actually face as a police officer. Each chapter talks about a part of the police officer's job like responding to alarms, filing reports, and dealing with the community. A large section of the book is dedicated to traffic stops and related situations, such as searches, sobriety tests, etc., which I thought was good because it is what a lot of officers do in most parts of the country. For each topic, there are several scenarios with questions asking what you would do. Theses are probably meant for a criminal justice class with others to discuss answers with, but even on my own I thought they were fun to read and a way of envisioning what I would do the first time I face something similar. Overall, I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to be or is going to be a police officer. It offers a good look at what situations officers really face and the scenarios even give you a preview of the important decisions officers have to make every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recognize Deceptive Signals in Speech & Body Language
This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Principles Of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation
Being a Stan Walters devotee I was pleased to find yet another rivetting publication by the guru of kinesics. Stans writing is refreshing and makes for interesting reading. The content itself is on the button. Excellent reference material for those in the business of detecting deception. I integrated the techniques described by Stan Walters with Statement Analysis techniques and find that I am now far more successful at what I do. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Children Held Hostage
Children Held Hostage is the very best book for help in understanding and identifying PARENTAL ALIENATION.It should be in the hands of every Lawyer, Guardian ad Litem, Psychologist and any one working with children. It, also, is very beneficial for parents to read, who are suffering from this disorder.Parental Alienation is cruel and breaks the bond-of-love between a parent and child. Before allowing a Guardian ad Litem or others to intervene, he/she should read this book. I cannot praise it enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for the hopeless
This is the most in depth book on the market for someone in a hostile custody battle involving parental alienation syndrome. The authors have addressed significant issues in great detail. They have provided useful tools to combat the issues at handand given hope to those embroiled in the battle.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delusion of Satan
This book is anything, but a delusion. If you're like me and"The Crucible" is only literature about the Salem Witch Trials that you've read then this is the book for you.It clearly tells the story as it unfolded never loosing sight of the personalities involved or the tragedy of the whole thing.I came away with a much clearer picture of not only this sad event, but of Puritan society in Mass. in general.Don't hesitate to pick one up for your self.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy if you like your stockings blue
Grade inflation is making it harder and harder to choose a book at Amazon these days. But to add a lonely dissenting voice to the Amen chorus: don't rush into buying this book if you love social history. The author is a feminist and Puritan-hater, which tends to limit her ability to write a satisfying account of life in a pre-industrialized Puritan community. First, the idea that all Puritan households were dour and repressive is a bit hackneyed. Weren't we taught not to generalize? Oh, I forgot--these are dead, white males. Next, it is misleading to impose a modern feminist framework on a time when almost everyone lived on a farm and men and women were full partners in running the homestead. Finally, there is no need to invoke "hysteria" to explain the behavior of the girls. They found a way to have fun and make themselves seem important at the same time. The more pertinent question is why their parents indulged them. Here we are left to chew over the possibility that they were paranoid because of Indian attacks, precipitated, of course, by the evil Puritan patriarchy. Doesn't it seem more likely that the trials were a rear-guard action of the Puritan elite as it saw its covenant community being watered down by immigration and generational change? But that's just a theory, too--and theories don't tend to facilitate well-rounded stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, well researched and quite insightful!
In this re-thinking of the Salem witch trials, Hill doesn't just report facts but rather analyzes the social, religous, economic, environmental and political forces in place at the time in order to come up with a plausible theory regarding the psychological mindset and motives of the parties involved.

1-0 out of 5 stars Remembering Denice
Denice and I grew up in the same small town in Oklahoma. It is of the utmost importance to understand how those of us who knew her were profoundly affected by her death. This heinous crime not only shook Ada, but also shook those of us who grew up with her in Purcell,OK. Denice was a sweet girl who had a smile that would light up the room. She was a year behind me in school. I recently pulled out a old High School annual. Looking at her photo brought back a rush of memories. Memories of a beautiful, innocent young woman who's life was ended in the twinkling of a eye. As important as it is that justice has been served in this case, it is even more important for all to understand that we will never forget Denice.
5-0 out of 5 stars NOT GUILTY
Tommy spent many nights, days weekends with my sisters and mother and is not the type to do harm to anyone. He has even slept across my sisters feet in the winter when the electric was turned off, just to keep her feet warm. I have seen and spoken to him many times since then and eventhough he has been convicted of a crime he didn't commit, he is still a caring person. His only crime was to DREAM or in this case have a nightmare. He will eventually be setfree.

5-0 out of 5 stars I knew Tommy & Karl and I have read the book...
I read this book well over a decade ago when Tommy told me about it in a letter.I knew both of these men fairly well and spent a great deal of time with them in the year before this crime occurred, particularly Tommy.Karl was a little "different" (mentally slow) but he was always kind to me and Tommy somewhat protected him because of what Karl had been through with his mother's death. They had many opportunities to hurt me as they spent a great deal of time in my apartment and I had been over to Tommy's mothers' home a couple of times and his brother's home on several occasions - I moved away from Ada just a few weeks before Donna (who I did not know) was killed.I also knew (or knew of) most of the other individuals in the book...and if I had to choose who would be most likely to commit a murder, Tommy would have been the last one I would have ever chosen. When I knew Tommy he was one of the gentlest souls I'd ever known - I can still see him talking and playing with his pet bird and how obvious it was that he valued life, even that of a a small creature.I don't believe he did it and I will never believe it.This book will keep your attention...and it will capture your heart as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "...A trivial thing full of humbuggery and hyprocrisy"
The Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925 combined two great American virtues: 1.) Individual Rights and 2.) The need to make a quick buck. One of the aspects of Larson's book that really comes through is how staged the whole trial was. From the initial meeting of the town fathers with Scopes to convince him to be a Defendant, to the State's decision to nolle prosse the conviction after it was overturned on a technicality, most everything was merely thespian. One of the most insightful stories that Larson relates is when the team of ACLU defense lawyers arrived in Dayton for trial preparation, a young man started to help them with their luggage out of the trunk. One of the lawyers shouted: "Hey boy, what are you doing with those suitcases!"Little did the lawyer know that that boy was John Scopes, the teacher that was charged with teaching evolution in a Tennessee public school. As Larson writes: "The defenders, along with everyone else, had forgotten the defendant."The author writes in this great concise book that the Scopes Monkey trial was less about Scopes, Darrow or Bryan and more about emerging fundamentalism versus a growing American concern of individual rights and liberties. As such, Dayton and John Scopes were essentially bit players in a staged battle between forces that still determine how Americans feel and think to this day.Not only does Larson concern himself with the broader sociological effects of the trial, he also talks about the ACLU's and the prosecutions trial strategy, which, as a lawyer, I found fascinating.Contemporary history has interpreted the Scopes Trial as the high water mark of Fundamentalism, being that the Butler Act and other similar legislation has been struck down as unconstitutional."Summer" makes this very plain that this in fact was the opening salvo in the Fundamentalist battle and not the death throes. It is not a stretch to argue that the beginnings of the Mega-Church and the Fundamentalist college movement began in Dayton in 1925.Thus, as H.L. Mencken wrote that year: the fundamentalists and "Bryan started something that it will not be easy to stop."

5-0 out of 5 stars truly a beautiful work
Public figures and interests can only hope to receive fair treatment in the historical record. To that end the mold from which Professor Larson was wrought should be exercised many times if that would result in more erudition of this quality. This book is the product of a remarkable breadth and depth of research, investigation and fair and balanced treatment of a subject that inherently evokes personal bias. And yet it is concise in its presentation, and is thoroughly readable and engaging. It is truly a beautiful work.

4-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of the controversy
There is probably one statement which both fans and foes of America can agree on; America is one of the most unique countries in this world. One way in which America is unique is that it is of the few countries in the world in which the theory of evolution is not widely accepted outside of the scientific community. This even though America has one of the longest histories of grappling with this scientific issue. This book provides a great introduction to this controversy within America, and focuses on the keystone event that brought evolution to the forefront of American politics; the Scopes Trial, that first great public trial of 20th century America.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pols Major
Brings up good points about various weaknesses and problems in preventing future attacks. Many of the included essays are redundant because the authors bring up parallel points making the book dry, especially after the first two or three chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take It From A Polisci Major
This book is most certainly an excellent guide to anyone who has the slightest interest in Militant groups. Terrorism may be a pejorative term, and this text attempts to take the reader beyond that and into an in depth analysis of trends, tactics and much more.Though I may be biased since it is required reading for my POLS376 class (Political Violence), it is most definitely not for everyone as it is not an easy read.Though the Cindy Combs book "Terrorism in the 21st century" may be the most definitive source on this subject next to Hoffman, I still must give credit where it is due. However, I did have one major gripe with this text. The coverage of terrorist tactics and training was lacking to say the least, so I recommend that you buy pick up the Combs book to complement this one.Wish me luck on my midterm! lol

5-0 out of 5 stars A textbook -essential for understanding current affairs
This volume of essays was written and compiled as a college textbook for upper level undergraduate and graduate level seminars on terrorism and counterterrorism. These essays were written on both sides of the 9/11 divide, as such some of them predicted the occurrence of (large scale)acts of terror on American soil while others prescribe strategies for countering the terrorist threat in the future. Readers other than college students will find the book of interest too. After all, members of the general public, not simply college students, have asked such questions as "Why does America inspire such hatred?" or "What strategies should the US employ in the war against terror?" This book addresses these, and numerous other questions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book you will use for years.
This is the book that I go to when people ask me about criminal law procedure. The text is comprehensive from investigation and examination to execution of sentencing. If your CJ curriculum uses this book and you are debating on whether to buy it, buy it. I have an earlier version and although it may be dated, it would be in case law only. Because of the breadth of information compiled in this text, I used this book alone for a ton of my classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Law Enforcement Basic Session Training
As the Training Program Assistant at the Calcasieu Parish Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy, I would like to express that this textbook is a wonderful addition to our facility during the cadet's fifty-two hour Criminal Procedure block of instruction. The attending cadet's have considered these textbooks as their bestfriend during their basic training sessions and have given high reviews. At this time we are currently looking into the possible purchase of the fourth or fifth edition of this textbook for our future basic sessions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
My book arrived within five days of placing my order, which was wonderful because I started class the very next day. There was some writing in it as described, but I don't care because it's a book, and as long as I can read the text, that's all that's really important. Anyway, the book was in great condition, it was the right edition, and it's easy to read. Thanks for the great service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reason It's a CLASSIC! (9th Ed./InfoTrac Incl.)
"Must-have" if you're interested in law or law school bound...Superb reference and learning book (there is also a Study Guide -- harder to find); you'll keep this book for years of use! If you take a Criminal Justice course, this is the text you should hope the prof demands. It is truly the best out there.Yes, it's pricy - but worth every dollar. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Grace is a loud mouth airhead.
The woman just yells and tells people they are idiots both in this book and on her CNN show, She offers no helpful suggestions, she is just a loud mouth airhead nothing else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh, boy. . .
She's opinionated, ignorant, prejudicial, arrogant, and, yes, bitchy.Nancy is PROOF anybody can be a lawyer; Nancy abuses the power of the microphone. If you want to see how the justice system DOESN'T work in America, this is a good read.If you want to see how the justice system DOES work in America, it is a good read.If you want to see WHY the justice system doesn't work, just look at the Author, here. . .

1-0 out of 5 stars Nancy is both ignorant and opinionated--an appalling combo
Nancy is so blinded by her agenda--attacking defense attorneys and defendants--that she manipulates or ignores facts that are contrary to her extreme views.I have rarely heard anything worthwhile come out of her mouth on CourtTV, and this book is no different.I hope readers (and CourtTV viewers) who are less informed about the judicial system (I am a lawyer) realize not to take anything she says at face value. ...
