As good as being in a class with Lilly
I'm actually not just saying that: I just finished taking Evidence with Graham Lilly, and his (excellent) book captures his lectures almost perfectly.I'm shocked that such a clear, lucid explanation of the Federal Rules of Evidence (as well as their evolution and major common law departures) fits in such a tiny, succint book.

Solid Book From A Students Perspective.
I found this book very useful both during law school and at my summer clerkships. While most states, or at least a good portion, have adopted something similar to the Federal rules on evidence, this book provides help understanding that tradition as well as the common law. This book does a really good job of providing a summation of either without proving too difficult to learn from or to sit with for extended periods of time. The only concern I would raise is if your state or the one you practice in goes clearly one way it may be better to buy the specific hornbook for your state. But for me, I'm not sure where I am going to end up for the bar so reading both sides has helped me tremendously. ... Read more

Excellent!
I don't feel the need to reiterate the praises that have been given this book as to its usefulness for latent print examiners. Ridgeology will change your life!
If you are a latent print examiner, this book is an absolute must have.Friction ridge skin is unique and persistent.Ridgeolgy will give you a better understanding of friction ridge skin. Rather Disappointing!
Dr. Lee's book begins with the well-known Scott Peterson and Elizabeth Smart cases.He details all the evidence collected (and sometimes not collected), and takes readers from the crime to the trial.Unfortunately, forensic evidence did not play a role in either case.In Scott Peterson's case, Dr. Lee concluded that it wasn't the evidence that did Peterson in - rather his post-disappearance actions and court attitude.On the other hand, it was interesting to not that the original jury foreman was removed (reason unknown) - since he was both an attorney and an M.D. the jury might have been led to a greater focus on the inconclusive evidence and the verdict turned out differently.

Book not consistent with evidence
I do not know about any of the other cases, but I know the Michael Peterson case well.The photographs in the book are not consistent with the photographs I have from the crime scene.The defense ridiculed the prosecution because they did not have photographs of the footprints in blood.So where did that photograph come from?Testimony in court indicated that the blood spatter was behind--not on--the chair lift as indicated in this book.The footprint in this book shows a foot clearly wearing socks.Those socks would be covered in blood.However, the socks in the crime scene photograph clearly indicate socks that are spattered with blood not socks that have walked in blood.Because of these inconsistencies in this one case, I view all the other material in this book with great skepticism. ... A classic text badly in need of editing.
First & second editions of this text have long been considered standards in the land surveying profession, but I was disappointed with this (the 3rd) edition.The material is all there, but badly in need of a careful editor.Errors in punctuation and typography were frequent enough to be a real distraction.I found myself pencilling corrections in the margins as I read! For instance, long quotations, not set with a change of fonts, or even quotation marks, made for difficult interpretation.I had the distinct impression that certain chapters were revised in a hurry, and that perhaps each author thought the other was checking the work. In at least one chapter, it appeared that two different authors took a stab at addressing a single subject and both were included in the book although in DRAFT form!The authors also need to update discussions of measurement methodologies to include electronic total stations, data collectors and GPS.Though I'm not a real big adv! ocate of gender-neutral writing, the next edition should totally expunge the term "title men", which must appear 15 times.Read more

Very helpful for the beginner
This book covers a broad array of topics by physical evidence type, listed alphabetically.It is very easy to use and a good starting reference for determining how a particular type of evidence should be (or should have been) handled. A good reference for any attorney or investigator.

Editorial Review

Two crusading journalists investigate the FBI's forensic crime lab and deliver a strong indictment against what goes on there. Federal agents regularly dupe the public into accepting "scientific" findings that aren't based upon science at all, they charge, and the lab is infected with a troubling culture where truth plays second fiddle to prosecutorial interests, with information potentially useful to defendants withheld. Extremely Well Done
"Tainting Evidence" is a book about the FBI crime lab.Stop wondering why the FBI always gets their man.They perjure themselves in court.
Excellent
John contributed a chapter to "Into The Buzzsaw". Exposes serious malpractice within the forensic dept of the FBI, how it's been compromised in some of the biggest cases, requiring them to be reopened. From the Oklahoma City bombing to the OJ Simpson trial. Even the FBI explosive expert on the WTC. John's a brave guy, find out why.

How many people remember when this report hit the news? How many people have thought about it since? (show of hands) Since then, how many times have we continued to seek justice utilizing this overblown, corrupt, self-serving organ of the Federal Government? Would you want their evidence at *your* trial, should you for some inauspicious reason find yourself at the wrong end of the military-industrial-prison-pharmaceutical-industry? Read this book and I'm sure you will say, out loud, in unison, with me -- I think not! Nothing has changed since that report hit the airwaves, the FBI continues to fly by the seat of its pants, making things up as it goes along, following orders in order to make sure the prisons are full of the candidates properly chosen by those it *is* accountable to...and it hasn't been accountable to the American people for a very long time. And to think we are basing a *war* on their "evidence" -- and it's a wonder I don't believe a word of it. Frankly, this book is only the tip of the iceberg in FBI complicity and complacence in a world that has gone crazy -- but it's a very important tip. This book is very thorough, documented, professionally written and very readable. A must for the library of any professed patriot. Read more
