5-0 out of 5 stars This got me through my evidence exam
Very good book on the subject, the best I've encountered in regards to Evidence and the FRE.I scored very well on my exam, despite slacking throughout the semester and skipping most of the readings. This book made the difference for me, and for a few of my friends who also got copies before our test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous.
This book is absolutely fabulous. It presents the difficult subject matter in a clear and concise way.Everyone I know is using it for finals prep.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help in Evidence class
This book is set up great. I like how there are cases, but no little like "notes" at the bottom of the pages. It explains the specific area of Evidence well in relation to the cases and gives good problems to work out so you can make sure you understand the topic. Great book!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Excellent start for novice or those interested in CSI"
Mark R. Hawthorne's "First Unit Responder," CRC Press 1999, ISBN 0-9493-002-1, is a 6 chapter 98-page guide book for uniformed officers working in the field who frequently are the first to arrive for a potential crime scene investigation(CSI). 5-0 out of 5 stars Rookies or veterans, Cops to firefighters to EMT's
As a law enforcement instructor at a police training facility, I found this book to be fantastic for the new recruits we train. As a retired police officer/Crime Scene Analyst, I also realized it would be great for some veteren officers and non-law enforcement personnel to review. Mark Hawthorne has kept the technical information on an easily understandable level. He has covered, in 90 pages, what would take hours of personal instruction. I found the test questions and answers extremely helpful in preparing reviews. This book can be picked up by the patrol officer, and if READ, could furnish much of the information to properly document most any crime scene. I would recommend this book to any basic law enforcement instructor or new police officer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest Bloodstain texts I have read. OUTSTANDING!
This is one of the finest reference books I have had the pleasure to read.It is easy to understand, no far out explanations.I believe this bookshould be on the shelf of any and all investigators, new or old.The tableof contents was very informative. You are taken from the history of thisdisipline, all the way to case study.Nothing is missed and you can carrythe book by yourself!!Credit was properly given to those that were first, there was no attempt to make one believe the editors were the"first" to discover this disipline.Photos often assisted text. I believe this is necessary for those investigators who do not see this asmuch as others. There was even a glossary !! EXCELLENT WORK !I lookforward to treating my eyes to the next book by James & Eckert

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in Criminal Law and Enforcement
Anyone involved in law enforcement or Crimial Law will cherish this informative, well written text. It takes a very complicated, mind numbing subject and pilots the reader in an organized, comprehensible manner to awell rounded understanding of the subject. This one should be requiredreading for all law students and Criminal Law practitioners. AMasterpiece!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best evidence lecture I have ever heard
I'm writing this review in response to a couple of negative reviews.I'm listening to the lecture right now and it is the best, most understandable lecture on evidence that I have ever heard.Better, in my opinion than the evidence lecture put out by PMBR for the MBE (law graduates will understand those acronyms).Believe me, I had a horrible visiting evidence professor (luckily for others she lasted only two semesters) who couldn't explain hearsay from naysay. It is a great lecture!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Veryfasttalkingprofessorthatyoucannotunderstand
I know what the first guy was talking about. I'm in my last semester and evidence is my last exam. I have always used audio lectures to prepare for exams and the Sum & Substance series has always been good. But this one is horrendous. This is not a professor giving a lecture, this is an auctioneer selling cattle. I never imagined someone could speak so fast. Sometimes his talking becomes just a rapid-fire spurt of syllables and he sounds much like a machine gun. There's no time to take notes or think about what he's saying. Avoid these tapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is GREAT
I don't know what the last guy is talking about-- I bought these tapes because Evidence was my last exam and driving home for Thanksgivings I felt like it would be a good time to spend a little time on it. Because so many people had rec'd these tapes I bought them on my way out of town. I'm not into booktapes, but after it got through the first 10 minutes and picked up a little--- everything fell together! I wouldn't necessarily say listen before you have a grasp on anything. But I think that its a GREAT review for exams!! It made so many things make more sense and clarified a lot of issues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book!
I recently purchased the Shooting Incident Reconstruction book by Lucien Haag and would highly recommend it for every forensic scientist who may examine this type of evidence. University's offering forensic science courses, as well as all forensic laboratory's, should have a copy available to their students / practitioners. The book contains an absolute wealth of material concerning the subject matter. Jim Hamby, Ph.D. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars awful and outdated
I picked up this book and was shocked by the writing and research. Admittedly, this is a book based on science from ten years ago but some chapters are so bad I don't think the information was correct even then. Some chapters may be good, (fingerprints, questioned documents) but do not attempt any subject based on a real science- drug chemistry, DNA analysis, etc. As far as I can tell, these chapters were written by attorneys with no science training. They do not explain concepts very clearly I suspect because they do not really understand them. Save your money. With the current state of CSI madness there has got to be better "forensic science for attorneys/nonscientists" writing being published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect reference book
This book is a necessity for any criminal defense lawyer. This contains the information police use in their training and procedure, as well as what to expect from an expert witness. Outstanding references after each chapter on where to find additional information as well as your own experts. Not as many illustrations as previous editions, but much more up to date material such as DNA testing and the background information so any lay person can understand what the experts are doing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Aid
This lecture covers all the major topics tested on the MBE and most likely your Evidence course. Professor Rossi's explanations of the rules are clear enough to understand while driving your car.His hypotheticals to help explain the rules actually appear in a few of the practice multiple choice questions I did and may appear on your exam (as they did on mine). What's more, the hypotheticals truly develop the rules, and Professor Rossi makes them funny and strange so that they'll stick in your head come exam time. Actually, a few times I burst out laughing from the hypotheticals (guess it doesn't take much to humor a stressed-out law student). The more I listened to this lecture the more my understanding of the subject grew. Well worth the time and money spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars First-class evidence review
While I agree with first reviewer that more reference to FRE rules by number would be helpful, I think this gets 5 stars. Helping it all to come together. And this lecturer is mildly entertaining, so this is not QUITE as dull as it could be. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done, and interesting.
Overall, this set of CDs is well done. Professor Rossi is interesting, well-spoken, and keeps the listener interested for what can be a dry subject. He uses examples that are coherent and consistent and easy to understand and his pacing is well-suited to taking notes, though it would help if you can type--I can't.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for intro class
I suppose the most important question is why are you interested in this book.It would make a good textbook for an intro type class in this area or would be good for someone who doesn't know DNA analysis, but is involved in criminalistics. The level of detail is insufficient for anyone who actually understands the molecular approaches. It spends a fair bit of time talking about cases and HOW this particular approach was once useful. These are interesting little stories, but the book really didn't give me what I wanted.I have a background in molecular genetics and was interested in making a career shift to DNA forensics. There was little of value for me because it never really got to the details.I think it would be good for a class because it provides historical perspective on the now outdated techniques that would be important background for someone who never knew anything about the development of the previous techniques and only learned what is current today, but to someone who has that background...seemed like it just added a new chapter to an otherwise outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro for the beginner
Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself.Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR.A word of caution to the amateur, however:make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence."My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA.It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

3-0 out of 5 stars vivid introduction to forensic genotyping techniques
Nice figures, photos, schemes, and U.S. tables; lively comparisons show that authors are good teachers. Though technical part of the book outdates fast necessarily (acronym SNP has not been coined in 1996 yet), it is a shame that an interpretation part of the book neglects the current knowledge. Bayes theorem is known since 1763 and, nevertheless, likelihood ratio is not even mentined in the book! Books of Evett and Weir or of Robertson and Vignaux cannot be substituted by this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail is Important
Attention to detail is important in almost all areas of endeavor, but especially so in forensic science. This book violates that fundamental in the first chapter. In describing the trial of Theodore Robert Bundy for the Chi Omega Sorority murders, it refers to the testimony of a certain forensic odontologist, and says that as a result of the testimony of the forensic odonotologist, Bundy was executed. This is incorrect.Bundy was not executed for the Chi Omega murders, but for the subsequent murder of a young girl.Forensic science figured prominently in that conviction also, but it was microanalysis and shoetrack comparison, not forensic odontology, that was instrumental in sending Bundy to the electric chair.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals is easy to read but a wealth of forensic information
Forensic Scientists Max Houck and Jay Siegel have just released a forensic science text which is perfect for beginners but offers much for seasoned scientists. The book's thoroughness is revealed across its 672 pages. Topics include a discussion of criminal justice and forensic science, analytical tools and introductions to biological science, chemical science, and physical science. Forensic science's relationship with law is in the concluding chapter.
