2-0 out of 5 stars This book was very unrealistic
Let me start by saying that I'm not in prison, and have never been in prison. I don't even expect to go to prison - I just enjoy reading about the sociology of prison culture.5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for soon-to-be intmates.
Going To Prison? is a unique and practical guide for the first-time offender to help ease the transition to prison life, answering all the questions that arise following the sentencing arising from a guilty verdict or plea. Going To Prison? is a practical compendium of valuable informationfor the family and friends of soon-to-be inmates as well. Going To Prison?is also highly recommended reading for clergy, social workers, lawyers, prison guards, correctional facility administrators, probation officers --and youth counselors working with "at risk" teenagers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting enough insights, a bit tedious to read
I've read just about everything by John Douglas and other books on profiling, and am a bit of a Court TV junkie. This book provides new information and insights into criminal profiling and certain cases than previously available, and for that reason, I'd recommend it for a true crime fan.It provides new information on the Paul Bernardo / Karla Homolka husband and wife serial rape "team", the Buddhist Temple Massacre near Phoenix, and the Waco tragedy. The fact that McCary presents fairly convincing evidence that Karla Homolka was hardly the "battered wife" she's usually presented to be in this highly documented case was the most startling to me.
2-0 out of 5 stars too simple
You can learn more in a one hour Discovery Channel special than you will in this book. The writing style is simplistic and tediously "Dragnet cute" which doesn't help. What the book needs is a real writer and someone to help organize the material better. Oh, yes, and an editor to cut out the many self-congratulatory asides that further weaken the project.

4-0 out of 5 stars shedding light on the darkness
McCrary and Ramsland recount several high-profile cases where psychological profiling has succeeded in solving the crime. All make fascinating reading, but what is probably the most interesting aspect of the book is his harsh assessment of the handling of the Waco standoff with Koresh and his followers.Like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, McCrary objectively analyzes the evidence and makes a conclusion. His analysis of the Sam Sheppard case has changed my opinion of who the real murderer was.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Research
ITS ABOUT TIME co-authored by Austin and Irwin, based on cutting edge research,5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book for the truth about prison.
At last I have found a book which takes a realistic look at the problems of crime and prison.I taught Texas inmates for eight years during the recent prison expansion.People were usually surprised when I told them how much I enjoyed teaching inmates. The longer I worked in prison, the more I became concerned about the misinformation, based on fear instead of fact, which the public had been receiving from the news media and politicians. In order for our society to survive, we must stop reacting emotionally and start thinking rationally about solutions which will make a lasting difference in a positive way.Prison expansion in the United States has cost taxpayers millions of dollars for the buildings alone. But the price inhuman terms is far greater. This book is essential reading for every citizen who is concerned about how our government is spending tax dollars. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Non-Specialist Reader
Daniel N. Robinson's Wild Beasts and Idle Humours (The Insanity Defense from Antiquity to the Present) sounds and looks more fun than it actually will be for the average reader without a sure grounding in legal, philosophical and psychological theory and history. The author does indeed cover the period from antiquity to the present, as per the sub-title, and provides many interesting ideas along the way, taking a rather conservative approach, but there are also many cases and people just dropped into the book without any explanation on the assumption that the reader will be familiar with all of these legal cases and philosophers from the past two centuries.A grounding in classical and medieval history (with luck I did have that) will help the reader manage the first part of the book. For students of legal history, this book could prove quite interesting and, perhaps, invaluable as the author makes a clever attempt to bring ideas of insanity as far back as the writings of Homer and Hesiod. For this poor soul, the book was a struggle with a few rewards along the way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The REAL truth behind the polygraph
I feel very strongly about this book because not too long ago a relative of mine was accused of a crime they didn't commit and was coerced by the local police dept into taking one of these tests. Fortunately, we were able to come up with many resources (including this book) to dispute the validity of the polygraph in court. Lykken's book isn't perfect by any means but it's one of the few honest books out there that explain how the mysterious polygraph works and the byzantine government reasoning behind using it. This is a book that the government definitely doesn't want you to read because it would invalidate one of their most effective "witch hunt" interrogation techniques.

1-0 out of 5 stars A very misleading book
Dr. Lykken contradicts himself through out the book. How can you say the polygraph doesn't work, and then promote the GKT for the detection of truth? His work research is indirect conflict with and has been discredited by other researcher such as Rakins, Honts, Kirscher and Abrams (and many others).Interestingly, since he first wrote this book, the Guilty Knowledge Test has been almost universally accepted as being worthless and little better than a coin toss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nails in the Coffn of the Polygraph Myth
The word science has been associated with all sorts of hogwash and chicanery, none more harmful than the myth that there is a machine that will reliably detect lying. I know of no better example of [pseudo] science than the continued use of the polygraph.Read more

Editorial Review

The hard-boiled, tough-talking homicide detective is one of the classic archetypes in contemporary American entertainment. TV and movies have always been loaded with trench coat wearing cops drilling suspects and catching elusive clues that crack the case. And while there is no historical shortage of fictional gumshoes, writer Miles Corwin shows us that the lives of real detectives, while perhaps not as glamorous, are infinitely more interesting. Corwin was given extensive access to one of Los Angeles' top units and provides fascinating insight into methods of evidence gathering, interrogation, and other facets of detective work. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Pacing....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent chronicle of a unique LAPD unit.
I will always find Los Angeles fascinating, and anything written about it is bound to be enjoyable to me.However, I had a very, very hard time putting this book down--not for its descriptions of Los Angeles and little vignettes of history as much as its ability to draw and keep you in its storyline. The events are all real--only a few names were changed to protect those most likely less than innocent. The backgrounds of the detectives are as fascinating as the suspects they chase.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Fiction In So Many Ways!
I live in the Los Angeles area and enjoy the mysteries of Michael Connolly, Robert Crais, and Paul Bishop, all set in or around the LAPD.This was a fascinating counterpoint to these mysteries, filling in details in some places and starkly illuminating reality like a Maglite at midnight.

5-0 out of 5 stars criminal investigation book
This subject is very interesting and the book go along with it well. The book is very interesting and is not boring to read. It has a lot of detailed pictures and information that goes along with it. Plus the reading is enertaining. This overall is a very good book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the book I was looking for
I bought this book because I'm interested in series on discovery such as: Forensic Detectives, Medical Detectives and The Fbi Files. This book describes everything(see table of contents) in detail, from the history of crime investigation till gunshots etc. After almost every subject, the book givesreal life examples and pictures.5-0 out of 5 stars The best in a long line of boring criminal justice books!!!
This book is by far one of the best of the criminal justice books that Ihave ever read.If it wasn't required reading for my CriminalInvestigations class, I just might have picked it up and read it on my own. This book is one of the most interesting and easy to read books that hasever been required reading. The photography in the text helps with thetopics in the reading much more than in any other books I've read.Thougha bit gruesome, the photos are of great quality and only help the book thatmuch more. ...
