5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for the beginner
This book covers a broad array of topics by physical evidence type, listed alphabetically. It is very easy to use and a good starting reference for determining how a particular type of evidence should be (or should have been) handled. A good reference for any attorney or investigator.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick Reference
This book is useful as a quick reference for attorneys and others with little to no forensic science backgrounds. It is not an in-depth text.It offers only the briefest of explanations and descriptions. Most information is presented in outline or listing forms only. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Analyze This
This book is not particularly well-written. It's somewhat cobbled-together, a Frankenstein creation of mismatched parts.
5-0 out of 5 stars evidence ofinnocence for Scott Peterson
At last, a book based on professional forensic evidence on the Scott Peterson case. This perspective, coupled with the book, Presumed Guilty, by Matt Dalton, create for me a more level-headed portrayal of facts, painting a clearer picture for the truth.Wecht's one piece of evidence for me, is the caffeine found in the toxicology test from Laci's autopsy.I have learned elsewhere, that Laci did not drink caffeine during her pregnancy. She clearly left her home alive, then, and was not drugged by Scott, as the prosecution suggested. She most likely was forced to drink caffeine under duress, suggesting the likelihood of an abduction.I do believe Scott will win his freedom, with a chance for a fairer trial.

5-0 out of 5 stars From high-profile forensics cases
Dr. Cyril Wecht is one of the most sought-after forensic pathologists in the world: his expertise lends to providing proof that runs counter to popular opinion and his scientific expertise reads well for lay readers fascinated by true crime investigations. TALES FROM THE MORGUE: FORENSIC ANSWERS TO NINE FAMOUS CASES tackles high-profile cases from Scott Peterson's murder of his wife and unborn child to the assassination of President Kennedy and the death of Marilyn Monroe. Dr. Wecht reveals methods, evidence, trials, and pathology techniques in a lively discourse which reads like a thrilling murder mystery of nine famous cases. Fascinating reading and a lively writing style lend to TALES FROM THE MORGUE 's appeal to a wide general-interest audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
The text provides excellent introduction into the crime of money laundering...very easy to understand and at times comical. Although the book is a bit dated, its concepts remain the same and I would recommend this text for anyone interested in understanding the role of money laundering.

1-0 out of 5 stars author is excellent at public safety
being the same field for over 30 years, i found the book lacking in real facts.......but an excellent effort for 76.00 dollars

1-0 out of 5 stars Money Laundering for the Stupid.
Do not waste your time or money on this book. The book assumes that all readers have the financial literacy of a high school student.Of course, the book was purportly written for police investigations so maybe the authors dummed it down so their fellow law enforcement friends would be able to understand it.For example, the book goes into painly silly details about what a balance sheet and income statement are all about and how to read them properly.(ie the section on debit-credit was particularly useless)My personal favorite was the filler section on how to buy real-estate or securities. The book only really gets to the interesting(and the most imporant aspect of a book on money laundering) "how to" structures of money laundering operations in a couple of chapters. One chapter is basically dedicated to simple structures like using smurfs so that is essentially useless. BOTTOM LINE: if you are at all familar with money laundering, financial statements, bank secrecy act, tax rules, yadda yadda, then this book is a waste of your time.If you know nothing about the above, then you may find the book useful. ... Editorial Review

The Innocence Project is a pro bono civil rights organization that helps innocent people who have been unjustly imprisoned win their freedom through DNA testing. Run by Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld (known for their roles in the O.J. Simpson murder trial), the project has thus far managed to free 43 wrongly convicted people and has taken on the cases of over 200 more. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A scathing verdict on the U.S. criminal justice system.
"Our procedure has been always haunted by the ghost of the innocent man convicted." -- U.S. v. Garsson, D.C., 291 F. 646, 649 (1923) (Judge Learned Hand)
5-0 out of 5 stars True Crime Stories
"Actual Innocence" is a legal term that refers to the wrongfully convicted. Being 'actually innocent' is not grounds for a release from prison in the criminal justice system without a new trial (Sheppard vs. Ohio). This decision must be made in a court of law, not in some laboratory. The 'Preface' tells of the beginning of the "Innocence Project" which uses DNA tests to free convicts who were innocent (p.xiv). This has "exposed a system of law that has been far too complacent about its fairness and accuracy" (p.xv). It can be due to: mistaken eyewitnesses, racism, rigged lab tests, inattentive defense lawyers, lying prosecutors. [We know how DNA evidence can be forged or fabricated, like fingerprints. There is no limit to human error.] But DNA tests only work with biological evidence, and they wonder how many were wrongfully convicted in other crimes? "Eyewitness error remains the single most important cause of wrongful convictions. If the prosecution holds back the evidence for DNA tests, a conviction prevents the right to have them done" (p.xvi). William Rehnquist agreed! Government statistics do not keep track of the number of innocent persons who are convicted (p.xvii).
5-0 out of 5 stars Unjustly imprisoned
Actual Innocence is a very deep and detailed book that i am sure anyone would enjoy reading. We are talking about real cases of men who were put in jail for many years, being accused of crimes that they never did. Some were even send to death row, luckly the innocence project was able to help these men by testing their DNA. Reading these stories made me mad because how can someone be left in jail for so many years when they are innocent. I learned that many of these cases occurr because of mistaken eyewitness. The victim will accuse someone else that they think is the one. I really liked the book because i lets you know many things that go on in these types of cases. The best part of all is that now there is DNA that can prove someone guilty and hopefully this injustice can end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Doing Time
Long-time correctional administrator Jim Willett and his college roommate, Ron Rozelle, have produced an exceptionally interesting book on prison life from a very personal perspective.Drawing on Willett's distinguished career with the Texas Department of Corrections that spanned three decades, the authors bring to light aspects of a prison employee's life that rarely find their way into print.
5-0 out of 5 stars A look behind prison walls
Jim Willett was what some people might think of as a contradiction in terms--a compassionate prison warden. He did his job, which included giving the signal for executions to take place, while inwardly questioning the humanity of capital punishment. This is a fascinating story of a man who began his career in the prison system as a part-time guard, trying to earn some money for college. He fully intended to leave after graduation, but somehow he never did and as the years went by and the promotions came, he continued in the work for which he seemed so well-suited.This book is written in the first person and this adds to the immediacy of the description of prison life and the relations between prisoner and prison employee. The stories which are told in this book show the depths to which human beings can go and also the common humanity which binds us together. This is a fascinating and well-written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read
Rarely is a 'civilian' afforded the opportunity of viewing the prison system from such an honest and insightful perspective.Messrs. Willett and Rozelle have succeeded in creating a compelling work of non-fiction that reads as well as a good work of fiction. My appraisal of Mr. Willett is that of a totally dedicated, honest and compassionate man who did an outstanding job--few men could have done better. This book will remain a permanent part of my personal library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wake-Up Call
We have failed to measure the true cost of our policy of incarcerating offenders and Nell Bernstein describes the costs that we have yet to pay. The damage done to a whole generation of young people who have grown up without their incarcerated parents are coming of age, and we need to recognize and address the problems that the punishment policy has caused.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Parents, for policymakers
The SF Chronicle says it better than I could so I am pasting part of their review below:
5-0 out of 5 stars a great book for anyone concerned our contemporary America
Its always easy to blame individuals for society's ills, it's been the American way for at least in the second half of the 20th Century.
