5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing hypothesis
This is certainly a worth-reading book. Its application of Durkheim's and Merton's anomie theory to the crime dynamics of American society is tightly reasoned and very appealing. The thesis that unusually high crime rates inthe US are the dark side of the success promoted by the American ethosseems to account for many of the observed facts. The book follows anexcellent logical development and provides appealing explanations for theetiology of the main American nightmare. Unfortunately, it lacks a trulycomparative perspective, since it practically ignores crime in theunderdeveloped countries. Compariong with Western Europe is hardly enough. And the last ten pages, where the authors provide their recipe forcombatting crime, are, to say the least disappointing. By proposing actionswhich are obviously non-viable, the authors transform their whole argumentinto an interesting, even fascinating, but useless academic exercise. Onefinal point: The tendency of the authors to add "politicalcorrectness" to citations is unforgivable. What an author saidanywhere between 150 and 80 years ago, should be cited as he/she wrote. Thus, in page 105, the introduction of a"her" in a citation ofMarx is unnecessary and smacks of opportunism. The same can be said of thecitation of James Truslow Adams in page 106, where the authors introduce a "and women". And before I forget, the table on page 103 placesAustralia and New Zealand low in homicide but also low on decommodification(monstruous word!), whereas Finland is higher in decommodification than theUK, but also higher in homicide. Don't these contradictions fatally weakenthe argument of this chapter?

5-0 out of 5 stars How True It Is
I was privileged to have Dr. Rosenfeld as a professor while majoring in criminology.I found his course and his research fascinating. This book is very well written and an interesting theory.Having recently become apublic defender representing indigents charged with felony offenses, Dr.Rosenfeld's theory is right on the mark.American crime is a seriousproblem, with its roots deep in american culture and expectations.Ihighly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the trueroots of american crime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting application of Anomie theory
This was a textbook in my university criminology class, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It applies the theory of anomic strain to the United States as a whole and proposes that it is the cause for crime and deviance. Many ofthe ideas and themes presented in it ring true with sentiments of Americanstoday, with the gap between the upper and lower class growing larger andlarger. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Long Vehicle - Please Do NOT Pass
Unfortunately, Wadsworth editors allowed Andrew Karmen to turn what could have been a nippy little sports car into a 14-wheeler.The 370+ pages could have been edited to 200 had an editor removed the padding.Insteadof zipping along, readers have to drag both themselves and an articulatedtruckful of words behind them.No verb is left without an adverb andsynonym, no noun without an adjective and a thesaurus-full of alternatives, and no idea passes without a repetitive redundancy. Consider, just as anexample, the "media."No, you are not smart enough to know whatthe media are;Andrew spells it all out- "The news media -newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations -deserve...." (page 25)Gee, thanks, Andrew,I really needed thatpointed out to me! I won't bother with more.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the inexperienced
As a person with no experience in fingerprinting, I found that I spent more time decoding what the book was saying than actually learning the information. You definitely don't want to learn how to classify or file prints with this as your main tool. The other sections are more helpful if you're looking for a basic understanding. There are a lot of typos and the wording is sometimes confusing. If you are experienced and need a quick reference, or a beginner that doesn't need details, then I think this book will suffice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
This book is in simple terms making a difficult material easy to understand.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Title Available On This Topic...
As a licensed private investigator and college instructor of private investigation courses, I must commend Mr. Brandon A. Perron, CCDI for writing a book that is, in my humble opinion, the best book currently in print covering criminal defense investigations. While this book is certainly of more value to the novice investigator, the experienced investigator will also benefit for Mr. Perron's insight. This book was also a "fun read" (something not too common amongst informative texts).
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the intellectually aware!
Some may not get it but I sure did!The perpective from the criminal defense has long been overdue. The foundation in critical thinking is what makes this work unique to the field. As a lawyer I found it most helpful in respect to what the investigator can do for me.I would make it a must read for any truly dedicated criminal defense professional.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a must read, but a probably should...
For the lay public, or for someone starting out in defense investigations, this book is perhaps not indispensible but certainly a solid foundation. Every good investigator should develop a reliable methodology; the marketplace and the justice system dictate that any method must be efficient and trustworthy. Herein, Perron's method is sound and may be relied upon by the most green of investigators without worry.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather Disappointing!
Dr. Lee's book begins with the well-known Scott Peterson and Elizabeth Smart cases. He details all the evidence collected (and sometimes not collected), and takes readers from the crime to the trial.Unfortunately, forensic evidence did not play a role in either case.In Scott Peterson's case, Dr. Lee concluded that it wasn't the evidence that did Peterson in - rather his post-disappearance actions and court attitude. On the other hand, it was interesting to not that the original jury foreman was removed (reason unknown) - since he was both an attorney and an M.D. the jury might have been led to a greater focus on the inconclusive evidence and the verdict turned out differently.
5-0 out of 5 stars A long-overdue focus on his famous works and methods
Dr. Lee is one of the foremost forensic criminology researchers in the world, having worked on over 6,000 cases and participated in many high-level trails with his evidence, so DR. HENRY LEE'S FORENSIC FILES is a long-overdue focus on his famous works and methods. Beginning with the latest headliner Scott Peterson trial, Dr. Lee focuses on how he investigated the physical evidence in the case, then moves on to the Elizabeth Smart abduction and other notable cases. Chapters survey how physical evidence is reconstructed and applied to the case in this intriguing true crime survey.
2-0 out of 5 stars Book not consistent with evidence
I do not know about any of the other cases, but I know the Michael Peterson case well. The photographs in the book are not consistent with the photographs I have from the crime scene. The defense ridiculed the prosecution because they did not have photographs of the footprints in blood. So where did that photograph come from?Testimony in court indicated that the blood spatter was behind--not on--the chair lift as indicated in this book. The footprint in this book shows a foot clearly wearing socks. Those socks would be covered in blood. However, the socks in the crime scene photograph clearly indicate socks that are spattered with blood not socks that have walked in blood.Because of these inconsistencies in this one case, I view all the other material in this book with great skepticism. ... Follow the money." Following the money in the Watergate scandal of the 1970s was a key development in that investigation and underscored the essential role of money in the underlying criminal activity. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is distined....
This book is destined to become the leading treatise and reference guide in the field of asset forfeitures for federal and state practitioners. Through a myriad of topics and numerous valuable tables this book summarizes and compares federal and state asset forfeiture practice. It is easy to read, concise and practical. Since I exclusively practice asset forfeitures, I find myself frequently referring to the book for a citation, a point of law, or an analysis. The book has quickly become my favorite reference guide in the complex practice of asset forfeitures. I highly recommend this book for the asset forfeiture practitioner and as a valuable addition to one's asset forfeiture library. ... Read more
