This book was great for the other aspects of public safety report writing. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are just as important as content. 2-0 out of 5 stars A good intro text only
I was originally excited for the update of this text. I was diappointed after such a long wait. The book is a good text for the basics of drug enforcement, but many of the focus areas are watered down. Where are the tactics and techniques for the street officer? In comparison to other high quality texts from CRC Press such as Geberth's Practical Homicide Investigation, Practical Drug Enforcement misses its mark. ... Read more

As a graduate of The University of Scranton, with a B.S. in CJ, I had the honor of studying under the author of this text. 5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best....
As a college professor, and researcher/student of white collar crime,Friedrichs' Trusted Criminals is by far the best text available on thetopic. His extensive coverage of the wide array of actions constitutingwhite collar crime provides readers with a better understanding of thissometimes confusing topic. Also, his easy-to-follow writing style andexcellent use of examples facilitate comprehension of the material. It isapparent that a great deal of effort went into writing this book.Read more

Editorial Review

No one's above the law, but nearly everyone breaks it at some point or another. Whether it's flashing lights pulling you over to the side or an auditor looking grimly through your tax receipts, there may come a time when you'll want to know more, in a personal sort of way, about arraignments and voir dire, habeas corpus, and just how bail works. Lawyers Bergman and Berman-Barrett cover it all in a straightforward, uncomplicated manner. Addressing police questioning and the law of search and seizure, criminal defense options and common defense strategies, acceptable courtroom behavior, basic criminal trial rules, and a walk through the trial process to parole, this is a strikingly accessible tome of information one hopes to never need. But in the event that you do, it's here and available in the kind of language you can understand and the wealth of detail and example you can use. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as legendary as its Civil cousin.
Although the style of the book mimics that of "Represent Yourself In Court" by the same author, its substance is quite thin. It does not seem that sticking with a particular style had helped the author in this case. Many definitions are lacking, both in the body of chapters and in the index. Under the topic "theft" for example, the act of forgery is inferred from misrepresentation or conversion. Then the topic is cut short as if the author had suffered fatigue.Attempting to study a specific topic in criminal law would not get you too far by this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible.
I'm currently busy writing my second mystery novel and can't say how much this book has helped me as a simple guide to getting things right when it comes to police procedure or the court system. It may be a lay persons guide but it either answers my questions or puts me on the right track in finding more in depth information when warranted. The digital edition is especially handy when I'm sitting at my computer because I can keep it open while I'm using my word processing program and refer to it with a simple keystroke.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well structured and indexed and funny
The law can be a dry and dull read, but these authors have introduced just enough humour to make the effort worthwhile. The names of almost every party in the numerous cases sprinkled throughout the book are puns or double entendres, and some of them are a little tricky to figure out, making for a nice diversion when the subject might otherwise have been tedious. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Deadly Game
This is a terrific book to read. It makes you feel as though you were a part of the investigation and really gives great detail. Another one which is a must read is "For Laci" What an incredible tribute to her daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A chilling look into the real-life of a true sociopath
Although I am a horror aficionado, this book chilled me more than the grossest fictional tale ... because it's true.Catherine Crier brings this true-crime to life using a solid voice, chronological timeline, smooth prose, and an insight that can only from a strong legal and journalistic background.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new and fresh look at a topic not truly examined until now
This is a criminology text, but fairly easy to follow. Basic criminology theories are reviewed here, as well as the authors' theories as to why girls have been left out of past juvenile deviant studies. They go on to hypothesize why girls have been overlooked, and point out the crime rate for girls has not "exploded" just recently, but has remained relatively stable with their boy counterparts. A great book to help anyone who works with kids, especially girls, who seem to have few alternatives once within the system. ... Read more

This book provides excellent coverage/review of Crim Pro. It gives detailed explanations, brief case overview, and black letter law on all topics tested in Basic Crim Pro and Advanced Crim Pro. 3-0 out of 5 stars Came up a tad short of its goal...
This book was a good read for a dreary return flight from DC.It falls short of the promise of its title. That said, every opening and closing statement in this book contained a valuable lesson for trial attorneys, and each statement makes a compelling read.I give this book 3 stars because it doesn't quite live up to its title.Perhaps "Some Really Cool Openings and Closings I liked" would've been a more appropriate title for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb snapshot of 20th century legal cultural literacy
With the rapid growth of sensationalist legal coverage on TV news and primetime courtroom drama a la "The Practice", it can be difficult to understand fully the merits of a good trial lawyer's rhetorical virtuoso aside from the twists, turns, and socio-political backdrop which typically capture Americans' attention. With few exceptions, (e.g. Scopes trial, O.J. Simpson trial) the lawyer, that civic advocate and protector of justice, rarely receives deserved recognition. We sit collectively on the edge of our seats with eyes and ears pealed for damning witness testimonies and blood-stained clothes. Evidence is rarely that clear, Seidemann informs us, and most real life cases turn on the efficacy of the lawyer. This book renews our appreciation for a profession derided so often for its dishonesty that we have forgotten the sad and dangerous implications behind the humor. Within these pages of heartwrenching tragedies and controversies that rocked our nation, you will surely reexperience memories of the incidents as the opening/closing statements verify or challenge what you believe. Seidemann reminds us that we have conferred upon lawyers the great responsibility of juridicial guardianship, in order to shake us out of complacency and reaffirm our right to demand their rectitude and loyalty to their oath.
5-0 out of 5 stars You can't put this book down
In the Interest of Justice is a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, slightly out of date
This book was great for research purposes. Understanding gangs and their signs was pretty much on point. The only complaint would be that it's from the 80's. Lot of the gang MO is still true but there is a section about "Stoner" Gangs, which are 80's metal heads. Basically if you wear a band shirt, jeans and sneakers you fit the dress of a Stoner gang. Their graffiti is band names like Rush and Twisted Sister (this should tell you the age of the book) and "Satanic" things. Also that car clubs are gangs but they don't have a certain style of dress or have graffiti. If you want a good laugh you can read it but for research or academic purposes skip over those sections.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good practical knowledge for training cops
I bought this book probably in '87 at Long Beach Uniform. It had good information at the time of publication concering the gangs in the greater LA area at the time.Gang associations, graffiti, turf, activity, and turfs are covered.Crimes known to be done by certain gangs are covered, heredity of the latino gangs, tattos, etc. are both covered and photos shown.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Greatbook but not the best edition
Every person should read Actual Innocence to see how 1 in 4 cases are prosecuted against innocent people. This edition omits a graphic which says 50% of these cases involve police and 50% involve prosecutor MISCONDUCT.The other paperback includes this significant information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening butTruthful
I read "Actual Innocence" a few years ago, it was well written and informative. However, I found the stories frightening; I could not believe incidents as these really happen. I have spent the last two years doing research on several cases about false imprisonment and wrongful execution, from my research I discovered these stores are based on fact.
5-0 out of 5 stars True Crime Stories
"Actual Innocence" is a legal term that refers to the wrongfully convicted. Being 'actually innocent' is not grounds for a release from prison in the criminal justice system without a new trial (Sheppard vs. Ohio). This decision must be made in a court of law, not in some laboratory. The 'Preface' tells of the beginning of the "Innocence Project" which uses DNA tests to free convicts who were innocent (p.xiv). This has "exposed a system of law that has been far too complacent about its fairness and accuracy" (p.xv). It can be due to: mistaken eyewitnesses, racism, rigged lab tests, inattentive defense lawyers, lying prosecutors. [We know how DNA evidence can be forged or fabricated, like fingerprints. There is no limit to human error.] But DNA tests only work with biological evidence, and they wonder how many were wrongfully convicted in other crimes? "Eyewitness error remains the single most important cause of wrongful convictions. If the prosecution holds back the evidence for DNA tests, a conviction prevents the right to have them done" (p.xvi). William Rehnquist agreed! Government statistics do not keep track of the number of innocent persons who are convicted (p.xvii).

5-0 out of 5 stars Anabsorbing, informative and important book
Sundby's book takes the reader beyond abstractions about how capital punishment decisions are made, and provides a rare and consistently fascinating account of how two actual juries reach their decisions. The book is filled with insights about the legal and emotional dynamics of the jury room and the courtroom in death penalty cases. It pulls off a couple of very difficult feats. It treats all the jurors interviewed with respect and understanding, and should be equally informative for those with strong feelings for or against the death penalty and for those who are undecided. In addition, it manages to convey quite a bit of valuable information about the death penalty and the criminal justice system in a way that should be accessible and interesting for those with or without a background in the law. In short, a must-read for anyone who wants a better understanding of the American system of capital punishment, or of jury decision-making in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit dull
i think i learned as much by watching 12 angry men; its hard to make decisions, but this didn't take me any further.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Current System Of The Death Penalty In Most States
This current system as practiced in many states is inherently evil. The system screens out all potential jurors who have the wisdom to understand the fact that the death penalty should never be an option because it is evil and exploits our animal instinct for revenge and vengence. The government that murders one of its own people in revenge for a crime that may have been committed is a government unwilling to set a good example for its own citizens. It is a government that does not understand that this act of killing breeds disrespct for all of the potential goodness, wisdom and compassion that a proper government can bring to add to the quality of life for its citizens. ...
