5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful indictment of the death penalty in America
This book, written by a Catholic nun, is a powerful indictment of the death penalty in America. She describes in vivid detail her role as "spiritual adviser" to two death row inmates, and in graphic detail, describes their deaths at the hands of the state.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Dead Man Walking
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth considering
Sister Helen's case is a highly serious and convincing one, and she has bolstered it by the results of detailed and careful investigations which she has incorporated on top of her experience as a spiritual adviser to delinquents, whose executions she watched in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading For New Or Future Cops
I am a graduate of a criminal justice program and was recently was hired by a small city department and expect to head off to the academy soon. I came across this book and decided to buy a copy to further prepare myself for the job. Given my interest in law enforcement I found it very interesting and I think it will be a good preparation for both what I will learn "hands-on" at the academy and what I will actually face as a police officer. Each chapter talks about a part of the police officer's job like responding to alarms, filing reports, and dealing with the community. A large section of the book is dedicated to traffic stops and related situations, such as searches, sobriety tests, etc., which I thought was good because it is what a lot of officers do in most parts of the country. For each topic, there are several scenarios with questions asking what you would do. Theses are probably meant for a criminal justice class with others to discuss answers with, but even on my own I thought they were fun to read and a way of envisioning what I would do the first time I face something similar. Overall, I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to be or is going to be a police officer. It offers a good look at what situations officers really face and the scenarios even give you a preview of the important decisions officers have to make every day.

I'm up to page 200 and while I usually wait for the end of any book to write a review, I felt compelled to write one now.-----------
5-0 out of 5 stars Recognize Deceptive Signals in Speech & Body Language
This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Principles Of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation
Being a Stan Walters devotee I was pleased to find yet another rivetting publication by the guru of kinesics. Stans writing is refreshing and makes for interesting reading. The content itself is on the button. Excellent reference material for those in the business of detecting deception. I integrated the techniques described by Stan Walters with Statement Analysis techniques and find that I am now far more successful at what I do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible editing, but there isn't much else out there to use ....
Horrible editing that SHOULD embarrass the company.Watch out for the typos and some logic errors, but there isn't much else out there to help you so ... this book is probably your only choice.Don't buy it, just use the copy from your local library or the copy at Barnes & Nobles / Walden's so you don't have to waste your money on it.Good luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get this book for the new ICE test.....not the TEA book!
I took this test in Philly a few monts ago and passed!I owe my passing to this book.I would suggest you study the that came with the packet. The math was like that, but much harder. Review the math in the arco book. The logical reaoning was very easy (because I read the logicals in this book and thought they were tough! The math was the hards, so just study the book. The last section of the exam is very easy...grammar and spelling.Use this book and good luck@

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Prep
I just took the test today and I wanted to write this while it was still fresh in my mind. This is a very good book to prepare you for the exam if you have a pretty strong math and reading background. If this is so, this is the only book you will need but be careful of the typos. There were many typos and when they appeared in the math section, they obviously create real serious problems. My advice, if you don't have a strong background like me, is to buy this and the Learning Express Book. Read my review on that book as well. GOOD LUCK! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Children Held Hostage
Children Held Hostage is the very best book for help in understanding and identifying PARENTAL ALIENATION.It should be in the hands of every Lawyer, Guardian ad Litem, Psychologist and any one working with children. It, also, is very beneficial for parents to read, who are suffering from this disorder.Parental Alienation is cruel and breaks the bond-of-love between a parent and child. Before allowing a Guardian ad Litem or others to intervene, he/she should read this book. I cannot praise it enough.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for the hopeless
This is the most in depth book on the market for someone in a hostile custody battle involving parental alienation syndrome. The authors have addressed significant issues in great detail. They have provided useful tools to combat the issues at handand given hope to those embroiled in the battle.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delusion of Satan
This book is anything, but a delusion. If you're like me and"The Crucible" is only literature about the Salem Witch Trials that you've read then this is the book for you.It clearly tells the story as it unfolded never loosing sight of the personalities involved or the tragedy of the whole thing.I came away with a much clearer picture of not only this sad event, but of Puritan society in Mass. in general.Don't hesitate to pick one up for your self.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy if you like your stockings blue
Grade inflation is making it harder and harder to choose a book at Amazon these days. But to add a lonely dissenting voice to the Amen chorus: don't rush into buying this book if you love social history. The author is a feminist and Puritan-hater, which tends to limit her ability to write a satisfying account of life in a pre-industrialized Puritan community. First, the idea that all Puritan households were dour and repressive is a bit hackneyed. Weren't we taught not to generalize? Oh, I forgot--these are dead, white males. Next, it is misleading to impose a modern feminist framework on a time when almost everyone lived on a farm and men and women were full partners in running the homestead. Finally, there is no need to invoke "hysteria" to explain the behavior of the girls. They found a way to have fun and make themselves seem important at the same time. The more pertinent question is why their parents indulged them. Here we are left to chew over the possibility that they were paranoid because of Indian attacks, precipitated, of course, by the evil Puritan patriarchy. Doesn't it seem more likely that the trials were a rear-guard action of the Puritan elite as it saw its covenant community being watered down by immigration and generational change? But that's just a theory, too--and theories don't tend to facilitate well-rounded stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, well researched and quite insightful!
In this re-thinking of the Salem witch trials, Hill doesn't just report facts but rather analyzes the social, religous, economic, environmental and political forces in place at the time in order to come up with a plausible theory regarding the psychological mindset and motives of the parties involved.

1-0 out of 5 stars Remembering Denice
Denice and I grew up in the same small town in Oklahoma. It is of the utmost importance to understand how those of us who knew her were profoundly affected by her death. This heinous crime not only shook Ada, but also shook those of us who grew up with her in Purcell,OK. Denice was a sweet girl who had a smile that would light up the room. She was a year behind me in school. I recently pulled out a old High School annual. Looking at her photo brought back a rush of memories. Memories of a beautiful, innocent young woman who's life was ended in the twinkling of a eye. As important as it is that justice has been served in this case, it is even more important for all to understand that we will never forget Denice.
5-0 out of 5 stars NOT GUILTY
Tommy spent many nights, days weekends with my sisters and mother and is not the type to do harm to anyone. He has even slept across my sisters feet in the winter when the electric was turned off, just to keep her feet warm. I have seen and spoken to him many times since then and eventhough he has been convicted of a crime he didn't commit, he is still a caring person. His only crime was to DREAM or in this case have a nightmare. He will eventually be setfree.

5-0 out of 5 stars I knew Tommy & Karl and I have read the book...
I read this book well over a decade ago when Tommy told me about it in a letter.I knew both of these men fairly well and spent a great deal of time with them in the year before this crime occurred, particularly Tommy.Karl was a little "different" (mentally slow) but he was always kind to me and Tommy somewhat protected him because of what Karl had been through with his mother's death. They had many opportunities to hurt me as they spent a great deal of time in my apartment and I had been over to Tommy's mothers' home a couple of times and his brother's home on several occasions - I moved away from Ada just a few weeks before Donna (who I did not know) was killed.I also knew (or knew of) most of the other individuals in the book...and if I had to choose who would be most likely to commit a murder, Tommy would have been the last one I would have ever chosen. When I knew Tommy he was one of the gentlest souls I'd ever known - I can still see him talking and playing with his pet bird and how obvious it was that he valued life, even that of a a small creature.I don't believe he did it and I will never believe it.This book will keep your attention...and it will capture your heart as well. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A deeply dishonest book by an of-so-trendy academic
This book is about the "broken windows" model of policing, which was put into action by Bill Bratton in New York City.Despite the fact that the crime rate in New York City has plummetted after this new style of policing was put into effect, Professor Harcourt hates broken windows policing. He tries to get you to agree with him by making two arguments, which contradict one another.
5-0 out of 5 stars Volume demonstrates why idiots so often disregard academics
B. Harcourt is an expert who debunks myths in law enforcement. His findings are against common sense and may sound ridiculous to readers (and policymakers alike) with an IQ below 70, yet he has a point and makes it in a clear and well written style. Unlike superficial studies, his book goes through substantial analyses and details, which are necessary to document the case he makes. A recommended reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars DISPELLS the MYTHS ASSOCIATED with the CURRENT DOCTRINE ...
This work may be best suited for students of Criminology who are required to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in conducting their own research somewhere along the continuum from Community Oriented Policing to Intelligence Led Policing. The highly academic style is replete with methodical concerns, including the value of empirical evidence, and research jargon such as regression analysis, correlation of variables, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for new police wives/families
I have been married to a police officer for 8 years. I finally decided to read a book dedicated to police families to try to make sense of some of the issues that only a police family will have to deal with. This book was terrific!

4-0 out of 5 stars a readable useful book

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Must-Read
Like the 9/11 Commission Report and books such as Imperial Hubris, Defeating the Jihadists is another must-read for anyone wants to better understand the threat a terrorism and just how our government may be mishandling the entire situation. Two chapters in particular stood out for me:Chapter 4:A Country-by-Country Approach and Chapter 5: Partnering with the Islamic World.Chapters 4 lays out in detail the conditions in five nations (Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan and Iraq) in which terrorists, or as the authors call them "jihadists," are seeking to replace existing governments or have already succeeded in installing a fundamentalist regime.Of particular importance, I think, is the discussion of Pakistan (a nuclear country) and the failed policy in Iraq. Chapter 5 discusses how we can partner with Islamic countries to promote ideas like democracy, civil liberties, nonviolence, and protection of noncombatants. This is a dry volume, but that doesn't reduce its importance.Every library in America should have a copy of this book. ...
