3-0 out of 5 stars Good Start
I am a former Army intelligence officer and I think that this was a good first cut at the topic.I was enrolled in a Homeland Security class that used this text.We studied the system and response of DHS and then the following week Katrina hit followed by Rita. What should have happened and what actually happened leave much to be fixed. The description of terrorism was so lacking that the instructor allowed me to teach the class. The information on chemical and biological agents looked like it came out of a Hazmat class manual. To be a better book it needs to be updated and revised.FEMA has free online classes which the authors should consider in their update. This book was great as no other book attempted to put together the area of homeland security under the new DHS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor
This is an excellent book talking about the policies, organization, and functions of the Department of Homeland Security. The author's provide an historical overview of the terrorist threat which is concise and highlights the September 11 timeline. The life cycle of emergency managment is presented by introducing several case studies which provide incite into failures of preparedness and response to terrorist incidents worldwide. The importance of communications and technology is discussed to help prevent and deter terrorism in security organizations. It is a book that everyone in security management should read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The dynamic that is Homeland Security
Introduction to Homeland Security provides a comprehensive view of the dynamics of homeland security in the United States from the view of experienced emergency management facilitators. This is accomplished by providing a historical overview of the terrorist threat which culminates with the September 11th terrorist attacks and thereafter the various legislative, executive orders and organizational actions which lead to the largest re-organization of the federal government in recent history which results in the formation and creation of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).An in-depth discussion and view of the pre-Katrina DHS are provided with applicable questions regarding the functionality and capabilities of this new department.Homeland security hazards are discussed with emphasis also placed on the safety and security of various aspects of the infrastructure of our society. The text also discusses the addition of prevention to the comprehensive emergency management life cycle of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The book concludes with a discussion of the importance of effective communications with special emphasis placed on risk communications; the various types of technology being employed and various technology players and their activities; and, provides a discussion of the future of homeland security.

4-0 out of 5 stars Criminal Interrogation and Confessions: bias and distortion at work
Old material that has been rehashed a number of times, but it is necessary to read it in order to understand the bias that is inherent in contemporary investigations. It is clearly illustrated that there is no actual scientific approach, no consideration of alternative explanations, but instead there is only an attempt to obtain confessions.Inbau, Reid, and others have never included consideration of other, more scientifically supported discussions such as those by Gudjunsson and G. Wells. The writing in the book is not very good.It is overly simple in style, and the organization is also simple, but not informative.Read the book for history and for understanding, but not for factual, supported knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the interrogator's Bible
Decades after its first edition, this is still considered the best work on interrogating a criminal suspect. The authors walk you through every step, towards the goal of clearing the innocent and eliciting confessions fromthe guilty. No detail or nuance is left unexplored, not only of thesuspect's behavior, but of your own as well. This book is a must read foranyone involved in criminal justice. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars awful and outdated
I picked up this book and was shocked by the writing and research. Admittedly, this is a book based on science from ten years ago but some chapters are so bad I don't think the information was correct even then. Some chapters may be good, (fingerprints, questioned documents) but do not attempt any subject based on a real science- drug chemistry, DNA analysis, etc. As far as I can tell, these chapters were written by attorneys with no science training. They do not explain concepts very clearly I suspect because they do not really understand them. Save your money. With the current state of CSI madness there has got to be better "forensic science for attorneys/nonscientists" writing being published.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect reference book
This book is a necessity for any criminal defense lawyer. This contains the information police use in their training and procedure, as well as what to expect from an expert witness. Outstanding references after each chapter on where to find additional information as well as your own experts. Not as many illustrations as previous editions, but much more up to date material such as DNA testing and the background information so any lay person can understand what the experts are doing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Power and corruption with a bullet
Having read this book was quite more of an eye opener than I would have liked to think in regards to what takes place in the hip-hop realm. It is quite unfortunate to read about what goes on with many of the hip-hop artists from an insider and investigator's point of view. The self-perpetuating, and often self-fulfilling lethality of hip-hop is something one could only hope would one day cease to exist. The corruption within the police force...I suppose when one can genetically remove human nature then this could end that.
4-0 out of 5 stars NYPD Blue in a book
Parker is a true character, and he and Diehl really make this book into a conversation between him and me (or you, when you read it). I appreciate the attention lavished on the old-school (Jay bookends the story) and the explanation of the continental divide that started in the 90s.

I own all five first year West Hornbooks (Property, Contracts, etc.) and they all are a great help except for this one.It seems every time I have a question, this one doesn't have an answer.I love the other West Hornbooks, and after using the others, I just can't put this one in the same category for breadth, helpfulness or clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Firefighters...An Exceptional Effort
"Firefighters" is by far the most interesting narrative and visual accounting of fire service history that I have ever seen.It is perfect for anyone with an interest in the fire service. Each author does a great job with their chapter...including just the right amount of text complemented by many visuals that bring their words to life. Considering the quality of the book, and that every sale benefits the families of firefighters who have died in the line of duty, I couldn't have made a better choice than to buy "Firefighters" as addition to my living room coffee table. You should buy the book...I'm glad I did...and you will be too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a criminal procedure class
This book is a clear and concise rendition of the law regarding criminal procedure. It includes all the cases that one would find addressed in a criminal procedure class. This book is worth its weight in gold if you area law student. It not only substituted flawlessly for my textbook (whichincidentally was written by the same two authors) but it was much easier tounderstand. The nuthsell series is one of the best outline seriesavailable in my opinion. I should point out however that the format is notthat of a traditional law outline. It reads like a book rather than like aregular bulletted outline. However I found that the narrative format madeit easy to understand the material. And unlike other outlines, this bookcan stand on its own for a quick overview of a topic rather than othertraditional outlines which require some familiarity with the subject beforethe outline makes any sense.I would reccomend this book and this seriesto anyone who needs to learn (quickly) about an area of law. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece -- The Art and Science of Interviewing and Interrogation
This book is the benchmark by which all other books on the art and science of interviewing and interrogation should be measured. It is truly a grand tour in every sense of the term. The text covers the greatest discoveries, techniques and practices in the field, and provides valuable insights by the authors, who are widely acknowledged experts and seasoned practitioners. The historical basis for truth-determining techniques is discussed at some length. However, the book really shines in its coverage of interviewing and interrogation theories and techniques developed over the past eighty years, paralleling the great advancements in law enforcement and psychology. The authors present a concise, insightful and balanced examination of the significant theories and theoreticians in the field, all the while drawing upon their substantial knowledge and expertise when evaluating and assessing the various theories and techniques discussed throughout the book.Their observations on interrogation ethics post 9-11 are thought-provoking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, not definitive
Unlike one of the other previous reviewers, though I am generally a conservative, I would agree with this book's primary conclusion: the NRA has had a disproportionate impact on the politics of gun control.
1-0 out of 5 stars Politics of Gun Control - Another liberal hatchet job
I read this book because I was required to in College. It is painfully, obvious that it was written from a predetermined conclusion. The history of the NRA is especially vicious. The author chastises the NRA at several points for the NRA early support by Government by subsidies, use of Nat'l parks to train WWII soldiers how to shoot, etc. The author essential argument that anyone that has ever received support from Gov't has duty not to ever to oppose the government in anything. In the beginning he points out that this book he will not examine gun control polices in foreign countries, yet on several instances he cites them (Canada for instance) to make his point, but nevertheless totally neglects gun control failures such as England and Austrailia (See London Times 1/16/2000 for details on this) . He quickly glosses over concealed weapon laws citing statistics showimng their failure, when a number of policy studies have concluded the opposite that Concealed weapon laws do in fact reduce crime. If you want one-sided reading of gun control this is your best bet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important read for anyone interested in American Jurisprudence
Gideon's Trumpet is an account of Clarence Earl Gideon -- an indigent prisoner who took his Habeas case to the Supreme Court and spawned the 60's federal and state movement to establish legal representation for the outcast. His case, Gideon vs. Wainwright (1963), resulted in the Supreme Court's unanimous decision to overturn a 21-year-old ruling in Betts vs. Brady, and secured the right of legal representation for the accused who do not have the means to pay for a counsel in the United States.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Legal History
This outstanding book dissects Gideon v. Wainright, the landmark 1963 Supreme Court case which held that indigent criminal defendants are entitled to legal counsel at government expense.Lewis tells the story from the viewpoints of the lawyers, the judges, and Gideon himself. He mixes legal history with human interest stories; his writing is unfailingly clear; and he provides a wonderful primer on Supreme Court litigation. The particular issues in Gideon are no longer of burning public interest, but the broad message that our criminal justice system must protect basic human rights is more relevant than ever in 2005.Lawyers and laymen alike will enjoy the book.Six stars.
