Perfect guide for anyone interested in the FBI

One of the finest Bloodstain texts I have read. OUTSTANDING!
This is one of the finest reference books I have had the pleasure to read.It is easy to understand, no far out explanations.I believe this bookshould be on the shelf of any and all investigators, new or old.The tableof contents was very informative.You are taken from the history of thisdisipline, all the way to case study.Nothing is missed and you can carrythe book by yourself!!Credit was properly given to those that were first,there was no attempt to make one believe the editors were the"first" to discover this disipline.Photos often assisted text. I believe this is necessary for those investigators who do not see this asmuch as others.There was even a glossary !! EXCELLENT WORK !I lookforward to treating my eyes to the next book by James & Eckert

Eaves dropping on the Ranger world
This is a fascinating look into the experiences of a Texas Ranger. I was born in Texas but had little idea what it meant to be a "Texas Ranger."Joaquin Jackson has written an incredibly truthful book that not only gives the reader a look into his Ranger world, but thrillingly allows us to peek into his conscience and eaves drop on his values system.
Understanding the Texas Ranger
Joaquin Jackson provides an insightful excursion into the mind and deeds of a Texas Ranger.He does not attempt to aggrandize his labors, and expresses reasonable concern about how political agendas can and often do impede effective law enforcement. There are passages that were seemingly added by a technical writer (e.g., description of the terrain and historical points), which detract from the highly personal message that comes from the heart and soul of Ranger Jackson.As a professor who works with law enforcement, I increased my awareness of how the officer must be highly dedicated and willing to sacrifice personal gain for public service, as well as face a constant barrage of criticism from many sources and accept that threat to safety is a ever-present condition.This book is excellent for understanding the psychology of a Texas Ranger.

What a life
One of the few biographys/autobiographys I've ever enjoyed. A rich tale of life in the Texas Big Bend country as seen through the keen eyes of a Texas Ranger. Filled with both tragic and humorous tales of life on the border and hilarious accounts of famous and infamous Rangers throughout history. For a first semester course in criminal justice, this is a very comprehensive textbook.Lots of information, and you can learn a lot.I didn't use any of the on-line features, so can't say anything for them.

You want this book
I've taken the basic exam, and did ok. Unfortunately military points, and other factors I wont get into here, okay is not enough. This book is the exam. The methods he recommends using involving making up your own stories to help with memory (something with sex usually works for me)has its advantages, although I think he overplays it in the book. I'm not completely through it, I still have mathematics left, but at this point I must say it is worth the money. And in my humble opinion, you get what you pay for, and more. However this is just 1 of 2 books with the words "Police Exam Prep" in the title that I bought, I'll let you know how the other one turns out.

This is the best evidence lecture I have ever heard
I'm writing this review in response to a couple of negative reviews.I'm listening to the lecture right now and it is the best, most understandable lecture on evidence that I have ever heard.Better, in my opinion than the evidence lecture put out by PMBR for the MBE (law graduates will understand those acronyms).Believe me, I had a horrible visiting evidence professor (luckily for others she lasted only two semesters) who couldn't explain hearsay from naysay.It is a great lecture!!!

I know what the first guy was talking about. I'm in my last semester and evidence is my last exam. I have always used audio lectures to prepare for exams and the Sum & Substance series has always been good. But this one is horrendous. This is not a professor giving a lecture, this is an auctioneer selling cattle. I never imagined someone could speak so fast. Sometimes his talking becomes just a rapid-fire spurt of syllables and he sounds much like a machine gun. There's no time to take notes or think about what he's saying. Avoid these tapes.

This is GREAT
I don't know what the last guy is talking about-- I bought these tapes because Evidence was my last exam and driving home for Thanksgivings I felt like it would be a good time to spend a little time on it. Because so many people had rec'd these tapes I bought them on my way out of town. I'm not into booktapes, but after it got through the first 10 minutes and picked up a little--- everything fell together! I wouldn't necessarily say listen before you have a grasp on anything. But I think that its a GREAT review for exams!! It made so many things make more sense and clarified a lot of issues. ... Read more

Still good in 2005
I used this book to prepare for the SFPD examination one week in advance.The question types outlined in the book were exactly the same type of questions in the examination.Knowing what kind of questions to expect and how to handle them definitely helped me pass the test. The book also has some interesting information about a career in law enforcement.My only qualm with the book was that the questions themselves were not challenging enough.The SFPD exam had more questions that the sample tests of the book.The SFPD exam questions were also a bit more difficult.There is a 2nd edition of this book out.I haven't had the chance to look at it but it seems that it is cheaper and may be a better preparation tool than the 1st edition.Overall a good study guide even though it was published in 1996.

Where do they get this stuff???
I bought this book to review for the police exam and completely failed!The examples in the book didn't look anything like the questions in the actual exam.I'm not sure what the other reviewers are talking about, but this can't be the book that they're claiming to be good.It was a total waste of money.

I recently purchased the Shooting Incident Reconstruction book by Lucien Haag and would highly recommend it for every forensic scientist who may examine this type of evidence. University's offering forensic science courses, as well as all forensic laboratory's, should have a copy available to their students / practitioners. Review of On-scene guide for crisis negotiators
Good 1st book to read on those wanting to be Negotiators in the Law Enforcement field.

A Worthy Addition To The Field
Frederick Lanceley's "On-Scene Guide for Crisis Negotiators" is a long needed compendium of technique and definition in the field of crisis negotitations. Mr. Lanceley's vast experience has enabled him to providetechniques based on real-life situations not just theory. The volume isarranged in a concise, easy-to-reference format which should be a part ofevery negotiator's "Ready Kit". One of the most important pointsabout this book is the fact that it addresses the types of situations faceddaily by police negotiators. Suicide intervention, long a subject ignoredin many negotiations seminars, is given in-depth treatment. In addition,the entire book is an interesting read. Police Sergeant Examination Preparation Guide
I used this book to prepare for the sergeants exam. I did not have long to prepare (A couple of weeks), and it helped me to achieve a strong score on both the written and the oral tests. I would suggest you buy this book. It is one of the reasons I'm a sergeant today!

Well worth the money.
I found this book to be very useful while studying for the Police Sergeant examination. While I did not use the written test section, the section on supervisory theory was useful. However, the oral board section was what made this book an essential part of my study materials. Nowhere else did I find so much useful material on oral boards in one place. Be sure you're buying the right edition!
Please note that there is both a tenth edition and an UPDATED tenth edition.They're virtually identical, but the updated edition has materials related to the Crawford case addressing the confrontation clause.

Almost no notes or comments on compiled materials in the book.It is difficult to find keys to understand materials from this book without assistance from teachers or study guides.The materials themselves are instructive and interesting.The book becomes voluminous due to the appended rules and their notes.If one has a separate rule book, he/she has to spend more for the unnecessary appendix attached to this book. ... Comprehensive Reference
Criminal Investigation: The Art and Science is an excellent reference book for overall fundamental investigative techniques and specific criminal investigation techniques for specific crimes. I frequently cite the text in the development of law enforcement courses (basic and in-service. The information in the text is current and accurate, which is typically uncommon, as most other texts on criminal investigation simply update a book's cover and neglect the content. I would highly recommend this book as a comprehensive reference book for new and experienced officers.

Investigating: what is it?
Criminal investigation is a very poplular subject these days with all of the CSI's and Law an Orders, but what about the facts, what is real? This book is the textbook for my Principles of Criminal Investigations class, part of my Investigatvie Services major in Criminal Justice. It very acuratly illistrates what criminal investigation is about, it is very much about the factual part of invetigations. Also it is not just about investigating the scene of a crime but its very vividly describes crimes and criminals as well as other aspects of the investigation like the psychology and methods invovled in ivertviewing.
Filled with dry, common-sense dribble...
I can't believe I'm taking an entire class to cover this material. Much of it is common sense, and what's not...is on an elementary level. The book is dry, & I've read 9 chapters in just over a week. It's seriously lacking!
