2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
Black Moses was first published nearly 50 years ago.It was based on a masters thesis and for years was the only book available on Marcus Garvey.Since the 1970s several new books on Garvey have appeared, most notably Race First by Tony Martin. These more recent books are much better researched and incorporate a lot of new sources that Cronon was unaware of or did not have access to.These include Garvey's newspaper, the Negro World and various governmenrt records in the US National Archives. It simply is no longer possible to get a really accurate view of Marcus Garvey from Cronon's now woefully out of date work.It served its purpose but should now give way to better books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Honest and Informative
Knowing only of the name "Marcus Garvey," I set about reading this book to get a better understanding of Garvey's beliefs and perceptions on race relations in the 1920's and 1930's. This book fit the billing, with an honest account of the victories, defeats, embarassments, and lasting effects of Marcus Garvey's legacy. Unforunately, Marcus Garvey was never spoken of in my high school or college history courses. This book provides a great starting point for understanding the conditions in 1920's America, which allowed Marcus Garvey to gather such a large and faithful following. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightfuland Thorough
I found Dr. Unger's book on Bob LaFollette to be insightful and thorough. In a provocative way, the author challenges some of the common beliefs about LaFollette, and creates a new awareness of his contributions to political history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Nancy Unger has written an outstanding and insightful biography of one of turn-of-the-century America's most influential political figures.Indeed, it is the first full-scale biography of Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin. For anyone seeking to understand the Progressive Era this book is a must read, for Unger's subject was at the center of the defining reform struggles of the age - from women's rights and corporate regulation, to labor and political reform.Drawing upon a vast collection of private papers and primary sources, Unger brings to life not only the public persona of "Fighting Bob" but also the private La Follette that few people know about. We learn, for example, how his early life struggles shaped his personality (for good and for ill), as well as how much he relied upon his wife, suffragist and reformer Belle Case La Follette, for advice and strength.Written in a lively yet balanced style, this book greatly adds to our knowledge of a complex and fascinating man and era.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fighting Bob Comes Alive
This is an excellent biography of a most worthy subject. Nancy Unger provides readers with a vivid and often entertaining account of one of the most important American political figures of the early twentieth century. Crucial to Unger's effectiveness is her dedication to balanced histocial writing. Her portrayal of La Follette is multifacted. It is political and personal. La Follette comes to life for the reader, not only enroute to his many political successes but also amid his failures and personal shortcomings. Unger's lauditory praise of her subject is deserving and her sharp criticisms are valid and substantiated. La Follette was an influential and flawed champion of democacy and social equity, and interested readers will thoroughly enjoy this insightful retelling of his life story. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Archbishop Desmond Tutu stands alongside Nelson Mandela as one of the most iconic figures of the struggle to end apartheid in South Africa. As archbishop of Cape Town throughout the 1980s, Tutu came to symbolize dignified, rational opposition to the iniquities of the apartheid regime, a faithful irreverence for unjust authority that led to his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. In 1995 he took up his greatest challenge, as chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the remarkable yet harrowing attempt by South Africans to come to terms with the gross violations of human rights committed throughout the apartheid era by offering amnesty and forgiveness rather than punishment and dismissal. 5-0 out of 5 stars Healing for the Nations
This book is not only about the evils of apartheid, but also about how a nation was able to move toward healing and forgiveness through the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Desmond Tutu was appointed to head up this commission that would offer amnesty to all of those who had been involved in political acts of torture and violence during the period of apartheid in South Africa, but only if those that perpetrated the violence came forward, applied for amnesty, and told the truth about what they had done. The victims of the crimes were also allowed to come and tell their stories and ask their questions. Within these stories are remarkable tales of how people who had been tormented or had their loved ones tormented or even killed were able to reach out and find healing themselves by forgiving those who had done this to them.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love Archbishop Desmond Tutu!!
What a beautiful and graceful man he is!!!!!!It is important to note that humility is above all the most precious characteristic of a man. This man is the most humble that lives. The struggles that is described in No Future Without Forgiveness is transforming. It is such a simple thing to say, "forgive."It is a very advance technique to live it, use it, and practice it.Archbishop Tutu is the tool of forgiveness. We should all learn from him and use the gift he gives.

5-0 out of 5 stars "One Courageous Man"
Nothing fancy, often repetitve but extremely inspiring. Archbishop TuTu chaired The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa from 1994 to 1996.He along with many other brave people pulled off a miracle. I am not aware of anything like this happening in our modern world. It gives us all hope. Apartheid came to an end and there was no bloodbath. This is the story of that time and the healing work of the Commission in Archbishop TuTu's words.Worth reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
The authors present a well written view of how the exercise of individual rights cost money if those rights are to be accomplished reasonably and in the abscence of armed force on the part of the individual.A number of previous reviewers have sanctimoniously and self righteously assumed for the book objectives far beyound its meager size and intent.I suspect they are the usual (1) "no gummint is good gummint" and (2) "no taxes is good taxes" types who feel that God, or something, made them exempt from cooperating with other people - a general description of so-called libertarians and far-right conservatives. In other words, their rights are paramount and they have no responsibilities or accountability. That road appears by magical thinking, as did garbage delivery and the sheriff's department in their view. They don't owe anyone anything for any reason, and they will shoot you to prove it.Sounds like they did not get socialized in K-12.Read the book for its intent, which is to object to "no gummint and taxes" movement in the US over the past decades which has brought us a really sorry pass and nearly into a form of fascism light.Holmes and Sunstein have done a great service here by raising substantive counter arguments to the "screw you, I got mine" groups in this era.

3-0 out of 5 stars Revealing Explanation of the Necessities of Taxes
While it wasn't the most exciting book I've read, "The Cost of Rights" was a refreshing twist on the taxes issue. It challenged opponents of the current tax system or any tax system to think critically on the subject.I felt that Holmes' and Sunstein's approach was more effective than a listing of statistics.Rather than explaining economic reasons for taxes, they brought it to a level that related more to readers.Everyone has a reason to be interested in the preservation of his or her own rights.Without taxes for government support, we could not be guaranteed equal representation before the law.Taxes pay for law enforcement and other government services that are vital to our liberty.Without taxes, no one would every truly own property.Taxes serve as the standard for American's to exist and be governed by.They do not discern our morals, but instead preserve our rights. In "The Cost of Rights", the case for taxes was presented in such a way that I couldn't see liberty without some sort of tax system.

4-0 out of 5 stars dumping in dixie a must read
In his book Dumping in Dixie, Robert Bullard contends the issue of environment racism. His exhaustive research is neatly packed into sections which continue to awe the reader; each section being filled with facts that prove that minorities are in fact living in less environmentally safe areas. These areas are the locations that large corporations choose to have their power plants and toxic waste dumps.Bullard proves that these areas are consciously chosen by corporations and the government so that they may avoid and escape pollution laws.2-0 out of 5 stars Dumping in Dixie, or maybe Right Next Door
Robert Bullard's Dumping in Dixie is the most scholarly book I have read on the issue of environmental justice and equality.Bullard's work is packed with facts and data to support his claim that minorities and low-income households are disproportionately affected by the presence of toxic waste dumps, waste disposal plants, chemical plants, and landfills.Whether these communities are being targeted by local governments to bear these toxic burdens cannot be proven definitively, but there is no denying the high correlation between the socio-economic status of the neighborhoods where these poisonous facilities are being located.4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars An evocative oral history and a provocative work of journalism
There are a number of astonishing things about this provocative and evocative history of a remote coastal region of Georgia. Greene's chronicle is not simply an account of the institutional and covert racism that plagued one Southern county. Nor is it merely a biography of an unlikely black leader who led a momentous, peaceful rebellion against the white hierarchy before succumbing (at best) to his own credulity or (at worst) to the very corruption he criticized. Instead, "Praying for Sheetrock" is a composite oral history of a complex, deceptively quiet community during the 1970s and 1980s, where the social norms seemed old-fashioned, even quaint, and where even justifiably disgruntled citizens, both white and black, are restrained equally by an ill-defined sense of fear and by a desire to get along with their neighbors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good
You will enjoy this book, it took a long time for things to get right in southern Georgia, You will find that there is power in numbers, especially if your on the side with the most numbers.
3-0 out of 5 stars A fine book!
Melissa Faye, author of Praying for Sheetrock, was born and raised in Georiga and has written three highly-acclaimed, award winning documentaries on discrimination in Georgia.Praying for Sheetrock, her first novel, is about the unspectacular Mcintosh County. There lives a tight-knit black community that has been barred from gaining equality well after the civil rights movement, in the late 1970's.The true battle begins when a black man is shot in broad-daylight and held in jail without medical attention. This aroused the community to take action and face down the corrupt white sheriff who held the town in the palm of his hand. This book goes through the process that Thurnell Alston and some of his friends go through to fight the white judicial system and fight the status quo of a very closed-minded town. They engage the help of the Georgia Legal Services, who are a group of lawyers who help poverty-level clients with their legal woes. Fay does a fantastic job using detail and really creates an emotional bond between the reader and the characters she portrays. While it is an interesting book, it adds far too much unnecessary detail, like the county's gambling and prostitution rings. While this is an interesting sub-plot it really adds nothing to the important topic of civil rights.I would, however, recommend the book to anyone interested in civil rights or interested in a book full of stories of the human condition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The other side of the story
Since few people in respectable circles today would admit to having supported segregation, it is rare to read honest accounts from White southerners who admittely accepted the system and went along with it, as most did at the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars An important book
McLaurin has written a valuable and beautiful book.It deserves a place on the shelf with "Coming of Age in Mississippi" as a document of life in the segregated South and of the moral challenges that segregation presented to those who lived in the system.

5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant recollection of growing up in a changing South.
McLaurin's book is a touching recollection of growing up in the South during the 1950s.His rich narative describes not only the difficulties all teenagers face, but explores how these difficulties are made even more difficult in a changing environment. While so many imagine the white teenagers of the Little Rock school integration as pictures of young whites during the 1950s, McLaurin paints a picture of a young man sensitive to the plight of blacks in the Jim Crow South.A very good book, highly recommended to those who wish to get a detailed portrait of the 1950s South ... 1-0 out of 5 stars From Empire to Republic: Turkish Nationalism and the Armenian Genocide
I have no words in my vocabulary for Mr. Akcam's book, except four letter words. They are inappropriate to use in a book review. Akcam is/was a mediocre academician in Turkey. I am sure there are others in Turkey who think that the Ottomans committed atrocities against Armenians. Some of these folks are the descendants of Armenian orphans that were adopted by Turkish families @ the end of World War I, where as, others are moslem Turks. Turkey is a free democracy where people have very diverse opinions and beliefs. Mr. Akcam may be part Armenian, maybe not. I really don't care. However, since he was a mediocre academician in Turkey, diaspora Armenians have made him the cause' celebre'for the supposed Armenian genocide by declaring him as a great Turkish historian. What a farce. This book has rendered him a visiting asst. professorship @ University of Michigan due to insistance of the rich Armenian Americans who donated a lot of money to the university. He has also hung on to his job in Turkey. The armenian hardlines claim that everything he wrote is/was the truth and he is a very brave soul for bucking the city hall. WOW! The book contains only information from sources that were anti-Turkish. Materiale' from Turkish archieves have been slanted and/or distorted. The book is a fairy tale about a very serious matter. It is noth worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professor Taner Akcam - The most famous turkish scholar to fight for the Recognition of the Armenian Genocide
The world-famous turkish historian Taner Akcam was the first leading scholar in Turkey to officially struggle for the Recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the turkish government.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Critical History of Modern Turkey
The difficulties of writing about trauma, about the limit cases in violence like genocide, especially for the historian occupying the perpetrator's subject position have been frequently explored and acknowledged by the scholarship on the Jewish Genocide. Akcam is a Turkish historian who for the first time overcomes these difficulties with amazing grace and brushes the painful history of the Modern Turkey against the grain with scholarly balance, honesty and moral responsibility, despite the 90-year old Turkish State denial of the Armenian Genocide during which about a million Ottoman Armenians perished. Akcam's book can be considered as the critical history of Modern Turkey since it meticulously `works through' the irrecoverable loss of the catastrophe that buried Eastern Anatolia into darkness since 1915 and especially since it underlines the links between the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Young Turk regime during the Great War and Modern Turkey with abundant historical evidence. In that respect, "From Empire to Republic" opens up the possibility for us the Turks to start `mourning' not only for those Armenians who were massacred during the genocide of 1915 but also for those who suffered the consequences of the 20th century's first ideologically motivated genocide pulling their lives all over again in the deserts of Syria. In the final analysis, Akcam's contention that Turkey is currently going through a second nation-building process that resembles its experiences at the beginning of the 20th century (p.116) is thought-provoking and underlines the urgency for the young Republic to come to terms with its past. I strongly recommend From Empire to Republic to those Turkish citizens who are willing to open up their hearts and minds to this `unofficial' account of 1915, which attempts to rescue the `truth' from the hands of the retired diplomats of Turkey who have succeeded in passing as `historians' during the last 50 years, to all human rights scholars, to anyone who is interested in reading a balanced account of the Armenian Genocide and finally to all writers of trauma belonging to the perpetrators' side. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
For this reviewer, who is definitely not a legal expert, this book was read with the goal of understanding to what extent pre-emptive wars can be viewed as `legal', to discover the reasons why the United States chose to withdraw its participation in the International Criminal Court, and to gain basic knowledge on the tenets and origins of international law in order to find out if indeed the current conflict in Iraq could be viewed as a `war crime' or some other severe violation of international law. Before reading this book, this reviewer was very unknowledgeable about legal concepts and reasoning in the context of international law, and had the opinion that international legal agreements were very fragile and tenuous. This view did not really change after reading the book, but its perusal did offer a few surprises and was thought provoking to a large degree. Like most legal treatises, this book suffers from the typical `tyranny of the footnote' that accompanies legal or history books. This minor annoyance that causes the flow of the reading to be disrupted is perhaps compensated by the need for the reader to know that the sources are available and that they can be checked if necessary.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice historical introduction
I haveattended author's lectures at Strasbourg. This book is a nice historical introduction about the ICC. I guess after the court is established and the Judges settle down on their chairs and volumes of case laws come out in Report form -- till then this book is a must read for everyone interested in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore Bush, Read This Book
Schabas succeeds fully in introducing the reader to the main features of the new International Criminal Court (ICC). His book is a model of legal exposition. He writes clearly, situates the ICC within the history of international law, relates the substantive law of the ICC to the jurisprudence of the Yugoslavia and Rwanda tribunals, and has interesting comments on the negotiating history that led to the ICC. After finishing Schabas' book, I was struck most of all by the care and thought that went into the design of the ICC, which conforms to the main lines of international law as the law has developed since 1945. The ICC is the world's best hope for bringing war criminals, human rights violators, and genocidalists to justice. It is a disgrace that the U.S. has tried to smother it in the cradle.(I am a U.S. State Department official.) ... Read more
