1-0 out of 5 stars Cohered by a Disengagement with Citizenship and Sovereignty
Jeffery M. Berry's study makes the case that congressional policy has shifted from responding to material concerns of economic equality to responding to "postmaterial" or what he calls "quality-of-life" concerns. He traces the path of legislative initiatives in congress during sessions coinciding with the years 1963, 1979, and 1991. He attributes the rise of postmaterialism as a policy motive to the actions of what he calls "citizen groups." He claims that the investigative value of postmaterialism is that it "challenges our common notions of liberal and conservative. [49]" Liberalism, of which a "new" incarnation lends the titular impetus to Berry's work, is seldom defined directly. Rather it is reified in absentia, as the definitional agency behind the result of Berry's study. By exploring another curiously ill-defined term, that of the "citizen group," as a "lobbying organization," I hope to arrive at a clearer understanding of the author's deployment of liberalism.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Work On The Influence Of Grassroots Groups
Jeffrey Berry shows why reports of the demise of the progressive wing of the political Left are greatly exaggerated. In this book, he explains how an expanding coalition of grassroots-oriented activist groups is building steam and coming to dominate debates about regulatory issues in Washington. He also addresses reasons why conservative groups encounter difficulty when attempting to address this phenomenon.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Longer Without A Face
Filled with statistics and factual data, The Face Of Human Rights is a pictorial perspective on human rights standards defined by international law and how its applied. It documents human rights violations worldwide, each illustration an uncompromising reality of powermongering getting out of hand. To prove once and for all no place on earth exists without unequity among sex, race, that also conflicts with personal identity under any circumstance, each country tells its own story. The book is 700+ pages in length, perfectly capturing the gruesome conditions of refugee camps(azerbaijan, colombia, palestine, ivory coast, afghanistan, etc.), prison confinement(death row, illegal executions, caged beds in psychiatric institutions, etc.), military occupations and life affected by war damage(kosovo, palestine, rwanda, etc.), scrutinizes relgious and social laws (iran, india, saudi arabia,), political freedom(iraq, korea, usa, kuwait, etc), womyns rights(family, identity, reproductive rights, enfranchisement, etc), child protection and services like healthcare and access to education(italy, czech republic, mali, etc.)- these are only a few areas out of the many that are brought to the attention of the reader. You have to prepare yourself for the terror unleashed within these pages: the painful expressions some carry do not adequately describe the brutalities(in the sense that even though you see it, you can't fathom it), and puts "security" and our own privacy into question. The vivide photography of the book also demonstrates what individual people can do/have done to counteract these abuses. Very informative and mind boggling- children who look no older than 8 but have the aging lines of a 40 year old manipulated into armed combat or committing war crimes and then getting imprisoned. Women still being treated as property and not recognized as citizens, or much less human beings because of their husband's identity or socio-economic status. Please get this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Disability Rights Are Everyone's Rights
Unlike race or other minority groups, anyone can potentially become victims of this type of discrimination at some point in their lives, as I have learned. Anyone can understand the heroic action of someone like Rosa Parks who refused to be put in the back of a bus, but can you imagine not being allowed to ride a bus at all? These rights were not given. They were the result of individuals of equal heroism and the movement described in this book. It seems until you have experienced discrimination you can't understand it. The disabled live in a different world. Many care, many think they care and many don't understand at least until it happens to themselves or someone they love, so it is important for everyone in our soceity to make the effort to understand this reality so many quietly experience.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why this book Matters
knowledge scales and political sophistication are key variables in social science studies that often are used without really thinking about what they mean or measure. This book provides insight into this problem and real solutions to solve it, in addition to the primary context of how informed americans are about politics.Great work and a must have for any collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Knows What and Why
Anyone interested in the knowledge levels of the American public, especially in terms of political opinions and where that type of knowledge comes from, will find this book very informative and rewarding. Delli Carpini and Keeter have accumulated a very well researched and documented mass of data concerning what the American people know about many different categories of politics. In an enlightening fashion they break down political knowledge not just into different categories of information, but also by demographic categories in the general population. We find that socio-economic status is as important to political knowledge levels as personal interest or media exposure, leading to occasionally worrisome conclusions about how average people can truly make a difference.4-0 out of 5 stars an important book
*What Americans Know About Politics and Why It Matters* is an important book in that it reveals how informed voters have more stable, consistent opinions and are much more resistant to irrelevant information (such as commentary in the media and campaign rhetoric, sound bites, and photo ops). It also reveals that informed voters hold opinions that more closely match those of the Founders of the United States -- including personal responsibility and limited federal powers -- than do those who are ignorant of the issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timely
I read this book after seeing Shrader-Frechette's interview in the US Catholic, and I found the work to be an excellent introduction to the philosophical and historical issues surrounding the EJ movement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe if you're a philosopher you'll like it...
After reading this title in an undergraduate philosophy class, and reading it carefully and thoroughly, I feel confident giving it a bad review. It was selected by the professor, who I assume is a fan, but I know I, and all my friends in class, extremely dislike this book.I'm a very strong student, an environmentalist, and whatever else you think I need to be a credible reviewer, but this book is very unengaging. If you're a professor yourself, I urge you not to use it in class.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting find...
the book did have some valid points and ideas about conspiracy's but some of them seemed a little too far fetched. I noticed that if u look at the front cover in whiteor bright light carefully you can see the numbers 666 on the mans forehead and a certain man named aleister crowly has a mention in this book....coincidence? thats the only thing i found particulary odd about the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Openminded
This book doesn't pretend to be 100% true. The editor Keith even warns to the introduction of some articles that this or that particular one may be deliberate disinformation. However, as he notes in the introduction to the book, most media is unwilling to even allow the public to consider ideas that are counter to accepted dogma and make up their own minds, and the purpose of the book is to stimulate debate.1-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't even finish it

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberty for all
It is surprising to me how many people assume that 'On Liberty' was written before or during the American Revolution - Mill was certainly influenced by the spirit of American liberty, which was variously romanticised and adapted in Britain and Europe during the nineteenth century. Published in 1859, 'On Liberty' is one of the primary political texts of the nineteenth century; perhaps only the writings of Marx had a similar impact, and of the two, in today's world, Mill's philosophy seems (please note that I only said 'seems') the one that is triumphant.
4-0 out of 5 stars Triumph of the individual
This Oxford collection of four definitive essays by John Stuart Mill, arguably the most famous Victorian writer who could be called a philosopher, gives an excellent profile of a rigorous social reformer and political thinker. The subjects of these essays--liberty, utilitarianism, government, and women's rights--are interrelated to the extent that they reveal a man with a sharp sense of history and its impact on the methods and mores of contemporary society.Mill, after all, was of Charles Dickens's generation and therefore witnessed an era in which the British crown was inclined to manifest its power through tyranny in its efforts to maintain a costly worldwide empire.
3-0 out of 5 stars On "On Liberty..."
Don't get me wrong. This book is quaint and it certainly has its merits. However, I was disappointed that the character on the cover isn't featured anywhere within. Who is the man with outsretched arms? Is he pleading for alms? Is he offering to pull someone out of a river? In fact, if you look closely he appears to be standing in a body of water which could support the latter theory. Who is he pulling from the river? Or is this a metaphor... do these essays figuratively pull one out of the river - the river of intellectual darkness? Perhaps not, which brings me back to my original point. Who is this man? Like all great philosophical questions... we may never know. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The author's parents, Ruth First and Joe Slovo, were South Africa's best-known white opponents of apartheid. First was assassinated in 1982; Slovo became housing minister in Nelson Mandela's multiracial government before dying of cancer. Reconstructing their lives--often in jail or in hiding--their daughter (born in 1952) writes with painful honesty of the war inside her between admiration for their convictions and desperate longing for the normalcy and security denied her as a child. There is no easy resolution here, but great love and sorrowful understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Little Thing/A World Apart - Gillian Slovo
i only read a small portion of Every Little Thing - having sat sobbing throughout A World Apart - the poignant movie version.
5-0 out of 5 stars How to think like a Commie - from their kid's point of view
Gillian Slovo is unapologetic in her rather petulant story of a neglected childhood. While her parents pursued Communism and pushed against the apartheid government of South Africa, all the while earning a good income with her father's lawyering, she and her sisters suffered especially her ambitious mother's indifference, imprisonment and lack of home life "quality time".
4-0 out of 5 stars Moving and challenging
A great read that poses the difficult question: what ought to come first--one's children, or one's cause? Especially challenging when the cause is the end of apartheid. Gillian Slovo is bitter that she didn't have her parents because they were busy trying to free South Africa. Understandable from an individual point of view, but the contribution of the Slovos to the anti-apartheid movement was invaluable. I don't know the correct answer to the question, but I do know that this is a good and engaging tale. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding read for students and professionals alike
Crimes of War by Gutman and Rieff is simply in a league of its own. It is the first field guide of its kind and deserves the attention it is finally receiving (thanks to the photo of Angelina Jolie reading it.) It is logically organized alphabetically by war crime and each one has an article and photographs to accompany it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unique
"Crimes of War" is a unique document. It provides a brief but illuminating look into what is broadly termed "international humanitarian law" or the laws of war.Expert journalists, historians, academics, military officials, and international activists provide vivid descriptions of various violations of international law as well as other issues and case studies; for example, "forced labor," "incitement to genocide," "aggression," "Chechnya," "civil war," etc.It is organized like an encyclopedia of human tragedy, basically. The photographs that accompany the entries are powerfully evocative of the suffering they represent, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Hand Documents Bring You There
When you get involved in studying political events and movements, ultimately there is going to be some disagreement on interpretations. While the Civil Righs Movement has suffered less revisionist history than many events of the last century, it is still valuable to go to the source documents and read about events in the words of those who participated in history or who made history. I agree that this book works well in tandem with another more narrative history, such as Eyes on the Prize, or Partin the Waters. But the compilers have done an excellent job of grouping by topics, with clear introductions putting the pieces that follow into proper place.I was surprised - I feared that this would be more dry of a read than it was. Instead I found myself pulled along, especially by some riveting first hand accounts of events such as the Attica riots. Another big plus for the book is that it brings the documents and the struggles into the 1980's, when first published. Many books ont he Civil Rights Movement cover until 1965, or 1968, this one keeps events in the 1970's and 80's relevant to what came before. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to feel as if they were there for these struggles, and understand our history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Begin Learning
This is a great book to get get a background on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's.I read it when I began trying to learn about the CRM and some of the key players.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valued companion to the study of the Civil Rights Movement
I think that this book is a valued companion to Taylor Branch's epic work"Parting the Waters". Together, they make an unbeatable pair of study aids for one of America's most turbulent periods.Read more
