4-0 out of 5 stars God Bless America the Ignorance lives on
This book describes what has been happening for years centuries. As an EEO specialist I know my rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should protect my rights at the Federal Level. The ADA Act is suppose to protect me at the local level and it does not.I do believe that EVERYONE has rights in this country our rights are comprised every day.As I read the other reviews I noticed Tomthumbguy believes the Civil Rights Moment 60s is not the same I beg to differ. Disabled people like African Americans in the 1960's are still not allowed to eat , shop, go to the movies, travel and live in certain places because there is limited accessibility or people just don't want us there. If I am not mistaken does that not sound like the segregated south from the 1700s until maybe 30 years ago. Also, let's keep in mind disabled people come from all walks of life and ethnicities. That included African Americans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad this book makes people think.
I have not completely read this book. But I am glad that it is making people think. To the reviewer who is up set with this book...I am white so I have no reference for what it is like for African Americans. However, I am disabled and I too would like to be able to go to the same places that everyone else does.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with some serious questions
I too personally have experienced what Mary Johnson documents in her well-researched work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Judicial Biography of Justice Souter
Writing judicial biography can be a challenging undertaking. How much of the judge's family history should be included?; what elements of the judge's pre-court career merit careful examination?; how extensive should the discussion be of how and why the judge was selected for the position?; and finally, how many of the judge's decisions should be reviewed to round out the picture? It is a pleasure to report that Professor Yarbrough has mastered the craft well, having written prior biographies of both Justices Harlan, Judge Frank Johnson, and District Court Judge Waring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Bill of Rights
The The Bill of Rights by Akhil Reed Amar takes an original look at the Ten Amendments to the United States Constitution that became known as the Bill of Rights.Amar, a professor at Yale University Law School, is one of the most respected constitutional scholars in the country.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sound Overview of the Bill of Rights and Reconstruction Amendments
~The Bill of Rights: Creation and Reconstruction~ is an informative historical exposition of the Bill of Rights and the rich republican tradition animating these protections from the impetus of the American republic. The Bill of Rights (specifically the first eight amendments thereof) are often misunderstood as it was not a positive grant of rights to the people, but it was rather a negative upon the federal government exercising restrictions upon generally-accepted common law protections, hence the phraseology "Congress shall make no law..." in the First Amendment.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Consolidationist
While Joseph Story is commonly acknowledged as a constitutional expert, he advanced some very flawed theories on the Constitution, which ran counter to the what the founders put into place, and ran directly against the limited federal government that was essential to the concept of federalism.
3-0 out of 5 stars Historically Significant, But Contains False Theories of the Constitution
Joseph Story began his political career as a Jeffersonian Democratic-Republican in a New England State dominated by Hamiltonian Federalists. When he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President James Madison, it was under the impression that Mr. Story would serve as a counter-weight to the nationalistic-minded Chief Justice John Marshall. Yet, after his appointment, Justice Story made a conversion to the Hamiltonian Federalist mentality, and became the protege of the Chief Justice. (In fact, he dedicated his Commentaries on the Constitution to Chief Justice Marshall.) While serving on the Supreme Court, Justice Story also served as a law professor at Harvard University, a position in which he was encouraged to produce works espousing the nationalistic point of view (in opposition to the States' Rights school of thought that emphasized the federal nature of our system of government).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for those interested in the Constitution
Joseph Story wrote some of the most important Supreme Court decisions during the early days of the country. This book explores, in detail, his views of the Constitution and it provides a fascinating view of how theConstitution was viewed in the early nineteenth century. Story borrows, liberally at some points, from the federalist papers and early Courtopinions to back up his contentions. Each section is very carefully laidout, and the entire book is constructed to explain the Constitution passageby passage. The logical order and a good index make this book essentialfor Constitutional scholars and provide ease of use for the casualhistorian. Whether you are looking for the meaning of a single passage inthe Constitution or if you just want to get a broad understanding of itsmeaning as a whole, I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading
This book should be the required text for all high school and college government classes. It is easy to read and contains information not readily available in most text books on the Constitution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Reliable, Essential
I love this book. It taught me about the Constitution and its simple, exalted ideas. If you read this book you will understand America's "charter of freedom" better than you would from taking a college course in political science. (At least, that's what happened to me.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Easily navigate the antiquated legalese...
This tiny book, though now a little outdated (it was originally published to commemorate the two hundreth anniversary of the 1787 Constitutional Convention), still provides a good introduction to America's "supreme law of the land". A living document, the Constitution has undergone numerous changes and additions since its inception. Someone unfamilar with its complex history will likely scratch their head and wrinkle their nose at the antiquated legalese of the original document. This book alleviates nose wrinkles and scalp chafing by providing brief explanatory notes on the Constitutional text. Ominous terms such as "habeas corpus" and "corruption of blood" get explained for the general reader. Not only that, the book underlines obsolete or overturned sections (e.g., the entire eighteenth amendment, related to prohibition, appears in underline, as do the sections related to slavery - i.e., the infamous "3/5 clause"). The notes and introduction also provide context, history, and the occassional explanatory cartoon (including a great one of Benjamin Franklin in a sedan chair). Assisted by this framework, anyone can understand the basics of the Constitution and its current state.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great little reference
While not being overly ambitious, this little book explains the meanings of the most important parts of the US Constitution and its amendments and puts them in historical perspective at the same time.2-0 out of 5 stars You'd be better off reading the constitution online
I'm a real constitution buff and wanted to get a book that was a great reference for the constitution. The book was obviously not it.Basically I paid for a scaled-down version of the Constitution with very very basic interpretations of the amendments and articles. The fourth amendment is explained in three lines. There is no thought put into this book, hince it's only ~60 pages, with about 10-15 pages used for credits and table of contents. If you're looking for a copy of the constitution and only need the basic version, get online and print it off any site.Don't waste your money getting this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A delight to read
The title of this review says it all. There are more scholarly reviews of the Constitutional Convention but none that reads as well.Take it to the beach. It's that readable. And it teaches. The Colliers have real insight into what happened during that hot but memorable summer in 1787.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very readableand fascinating analysis of the 1787 Convention
I enjoyed reading this book.In it, the authors explain what happened at the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Most enthusiasts of the period know about Madison and Hamilton and that the Convention was convened to write a new Constitution, but what many don't know is that there were many characters besides Madison and Hamilton that attended and held sway. And in bringing to light these other characters the book shines.
5-0 out of 5 stars What made the Convention work?
I doubt that Christopher and James Lincoln Collier have written the last book on the Constitution of The United States and the Convention that produced it, but they have certainly produced a good one. Decision in Philadelphia provides the reader with a detailed look at two main themes. The first is the political milieu in which the Convention delegates lived and worked. The second is the personalities of the delegates themselves and how they interacted during the hot summer of 1787.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comparative Analysis
Among the significant documents of American history, few hold such a high degree of significance as the FEDERALIST PAPERS, constructed by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. There is an endless list of books written on the Federalist Papers of which to choose from, however, the Anti-Federalist side of the argument has, for the most part, been ignored among American historians, and I know of no other volume that gives the reader a better opportunity to examine both sides of the argument together. THE ESSENTIAL FEDERALIST AND ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS, edited by David Wootton, presents both sides of the argument for the reader's examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very balanced
This book is very balanced, and is not hostile to religion. It argues very fairly for the separation of church and state in the U.S., and explains why it is important, and all the Supreme Court cases over the years that have established this principle very clearly in the U.S. I highly recommend this well-researched, and balanced book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Study and Group Discussion
The book includes eight appendices with excerpts of important historical documents, making it easy to read original source material and form one's own judgments concerning the intent of the Founding Fathers. The authors proceed through nine short chapters (each followed by excellent discussion questions) to demonstrate that regardless of what the religious beliefs of the Founding Fathers may have been as individuals, they did not desire that the Constituion create a Christian Nation.Indeed, they demonstrate quite persuasively that the notion that the United States was founded as a Christian Nation is a myth.More and more conservative Christians today seem to argue that separation of church and state is not found in, or founded upon the Constitution.I wish I could get them all to read this easy to read book, because as a conservative Christian myself, it worries me that there are so many uniformed people ready to believe leaders who tell them that separation of church and state is a myth.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clarify a lie
While I recommend this book, it is not without reservation.
