5-0 out of 5 stars Piviotal resource for ascertaining framer's intent
This is a monumental work, which I think is a must have for student of jurisprudence and constitutional law.I found it incredibly useful as a law student in studying the debates and understanding developments in the common law tradition and constitutional history since the inception of the Republic. It is well organized, and though their is some duplication of materials, it serves the purpose of making the reference more accessible and user-friendly rather than havinga cross-referencing scheme.Perhaps, the other user might be right in pointing out that the CD-ROM might be better suited for some users.I have an affinity for the printed matter and the organization makes things relatively easy to find.Though, it is available online for free.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Use
The book itself is amazing, and is a most for anyone studying the constitution or constitutional law. However, the Cd-rom version is signifacantly easier to use, and a lot cheaper.Plus there is no real reason to buy the CD or Book because the whole thing is on at the Chicago University webpage for free. But, if you need some sort of hard copy, go with the CD

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource
This 5-volume set is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the historical context of the U.S. Constitution. The editors have divided the Constitution up clause by clause. For each section they provide primary, explanatory materials such as letters, records of debates, and early case law. These resources reveal what the writers of the Constitution intended with the language they chose and how that langauge was orginally interpreted. The editors also provide interesting materials on early English law, showing the legal backdrop the Founders worked against.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars well?
I bought this book knowing that I would have to wait for volume 2, knowing what was in this volume and what was to be in the later volume. As there's now no 2nd volume coming, the author appears to have misled his customers.Reminds me of Solomon, somehow -- halves of some things aren't worth half the price of the whole thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Most Over-rated Book of All Time
Under Mark Twain's definition, a classic book is one which people praise but don't read.By that definition, Tribe's treatise is one of the all time classics--if not, in fact, THE greatest classic in the history of the printed word.
5-0 out of 5 stars Law Students Take A Look!
Tribe's treatise (Volume I) on U.S. Constitutional Law is worth a look.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book makes me want to hop the border to Canada
This book is truly awful.I don't know what her publisher was thinking by letting this book get out.The tone: Nasal. The language: Sociological jargon. The argument: Garbage.Save a tree and find something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reframing immigration history
Mae Ngai's ambitious book compels historians and general readers alike to critically reassess traditional understandings of and approaches to U.S. immigration.Much of the histories on U.S. immigration and immigration policies have told a similar tale. The United States, the narrative goes, has been tainted by a long history of exclusion, a blight on the nation's democratic tradition that was only recently removed with the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965.Such a narrative not only reaffirms the myth of American universalism, but also consistently fails to produce any new critical knowledge about U.S. immigration and U.S. history.Impossible Subjects differs from these other works of immigration history in this important respect: it proceeds with the conviction that the United States was never a "nation of immigrants."
4-0 out of 5 stars The legally constructed "illegal aliens"
IMPOSSIBLE SUBJECTS, written by Mae Ngai, is the best of recent books on the 20th-century American history of immigration. She reveals that the problem of "illegal immigrants," which has been regarded as one of the most serious problems since the late 20th century, is indeed a legal construction. According to the author, immigrants from Mexico were drawn into the U.S. Southeast because the Southeast political economy, especially agri-business, raised need for the massive wave of low-wage immigrant workers and at the same time defined them as the racially "foreign" people who were rendered alien to America, which was defined as the nation of Caucasians. What enabled the American Government and people to attach racialized foreignness to the Mexican immigrants (and, inevitably, American citizens of Mexican origin) were Immigration Acts, border policing, and discriminatory control of visas.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide to Con Law
I have only the highest praise for Prof. Chemerinsky's Con Law book.Constitutional Law may be the most difficult and abstract course in law school, and this is partially due to casebook treatment of the subject. In Con Law, the philosophical differences between Supreme Court justices are a clear influence on the case holdings.Since philosophical trends change as the Court changes, this force produces theoretical undercurrents which are not adequately covered in the casebook. This book dramatically reduces ambiguities in holdings and treatments by offering good discussion of these philosophical currents within the Court as a supplement to the legal concepts (with historical and political perspective added as well).
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Treatise
Prof. Chemerinsky's Con Law treatise is simply wonderful. It's very helpful. It's one of my favorite legal treatises (along with Prof. Farnsworth's Contracts). My only criticism: it needs to be updated in some parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Con Law review
This book is excellent. My Con Law professor is impossible to understand, and I literally had to teach myself the entire course.I could not have done it without this book.Chemerinsky explains things in a way that is easy to understand and not at all confusing.I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a horrible Con Law professor! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Jim Jones lives...
The issue of how best to govern a nation is of great importance and should be explored through intellectual, logical debate.Dahl's book does not carry the weight this topic deserves because he entirely avoids exposure of the logical constructs from which his conclusions stem.
5-0 out of 5 stars No example for the world
Dahl's fine book attacks the American Constitution and system of government for each of the following undemocratic features, most of them totally unique to the US among the world's advanced democracies, and all very rare.
1-0 out of 5 stars A writer unqualified for his declared task
Mr Dahl claims he does not intend to propose changes to the Constitution, but, rather, changes in how we think about it. Since he appears ignorant of his subject, I find him unqualified to suggest either.

Editorial Review

According to legal scholar Cass Sunstein, it is not enough to label judges as "liberal" or "conservative" or any other ideological stripe; one must also take into account their approach to constitutional interpretation. In Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best place to look for a balanced view
This book's biggest failure is its assumption that its readers will share the author's own political views.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sunstein's Wishful Thinking Theory of Constitutional Analysis
I will focus solely on Sunstein's take on the Second Amendment. He supports the so-called "collective rights" theory which a) runs exactly contrary to the plain text of the amendment b) the historical understanding of the courts and c) against the current "standard model" of legal interpretation of the Second Amendment (which is in fact a return to the historical view of the right - an individual right). He ignores the 14th Amendment and incorrectly interprets one of the few modern Second Amendment cases - Miller (which ruled that weapons suitable for military (militia) use ARE protected.Sunstein bends and twists language, precedent and history to yeild his desired interpretation, rather than be informed by the same as to what the writers of the Constitution intended. This way lies madness, where words have no meaning or context and the Constitution is maleable as wax, offering no limits on the government and no protection to the citizens rights.Don't waste your time or money on this book, as the subject of this fiction is politics and not the Constitution.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fine and educational book, but completely overlooking
This book completely overlooks the very constitutional perogrative, that the power to change the clear meaning of the constitution lies with We The People, and nowhere else.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book
This is a pretty good book for people concerned about possible deterioration of American civil liberties in the event of further successful 9/11-type attacks. It is almost impossible to amend the U.S. Constitution. So Ackerman proposes laws that could be enacted by Congress and states that would help do this. It should be read in conjunction with Richard Posner's Catastrophe, which makes a case for some curtailment of civil liberties, given the dangers of the age we live in.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Yale professor impressed with himself
This book spews the progressive line that judges should make laws and run the country.By proposing that war powers be taken over by a group of congress and ruled over by judges, he proposes that we all give up our right to vote and express ourselves to an unelected and unfireable federal judge.More of the same "we know better than you" pablum spewed by the socialist/communist/nambla movement. What is even sadder is that he is a professor of law and influences young minds in this capacity.Save your money. Why pay to read "I am smart and you are not".If so bright why has he never been able to get a real job in the private sector without the cushion of tenure.Buy a latte instead, more satisfying. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Proper Role for the Supreme Court
Given all the hoopla about whether the federal courts have exceeded their proper boundaries, including recent threats by House and Senate Republicans to retaliate for the Terri Schiavo decisions, it seems an opportune time to consider what is the appropriate role for the Supreme Court in our democratic pollitical system.Jeffrey Rosen's book should contribute mightily toward that end.Rosen writes as a George Washington University law professor for the law reviews; serves as legal editor of "The New Republic"; and manages to write important articles for general publications, such as his recent article in "The Atlantic" entitled "The Day After Roe."So he is very effective at explaining legal concepts for a general audience, for whom this book is designed.
