5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly comprehensive and well-written
This hardcover volume is one of the most thorough and informed discussions you're likely to find on legal issues affecting the elderly. The authors, who are both elder law attorneys, begin with a quote from Milton Berle: "I've got enough money for the rest of my life, unless I want to buy something." They wrote the book, the authors say, to give readers "more than a punchline" with which to face their future. After reading it, you'll be able to face your future as something of an expert yourself.5-0 out of 5 stars Every adult should read it.
Easy to read and follow. Not just for seniors.Recommend it for all ages.Concise and to the point.Up-to-date with great resources in appendix.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide in this topic I have seen!
Possibly the best legal guide of any type I have seen. It's hard to believe that this is written by a LAWYER because it's actually easy for a regular person to understand. Highly recommended!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Organized, coherent material that should be standard reading
If anyone has ever tried to make clear the the foundations of employment discrimination law, Donohue cuts them to dust. His brilliant piece is more than just a clever name. Although it is unfortunate that his affable sense of humor takes a back seat, he still manages to grip the reader with his exceptional analyses and pertinant data. I would recommend this book to anyone who has even the slightest interest in the field of employment discrimination law. In fact, it should be standard reading in every law school across the country. No library or bookstore worth its salt is complete without this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good summary to academic commentary on employment law
The proliferation of employment discrimination law since 1964 -- such as Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act -- has resulted in a steady increase in the "market share" of litigation devoted to such issues. While the nature of thelegal disputes in employment cases is not on an intellectual par with, sayconstitutional disputes, it is nevertheless complex and at timesfascinating. The nation's continuing grapples with affirmative action, forexample, demonstrate that there are serious issues that underlie what mayseem to be the simple situation of a fired employee.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid Must-Read
"Unwanted Sex" explains, in clear and understandable language, how limited is women's (and men's ) legal protection from unwanted sex.Schulhofer shows that rape laws in almost all states STILL require actualphysical force or the immediate threat of it: other forms of coercion areokay! Amazing. He convincingly debunks the claims of Camille Paglia, KatieRoiphe and Christina Hoff Sommers that the law indulges weak-willed women, criminalizes 'bad sex" and so forth. I recommend "UnwantedSex" to anyone who wants to understand rape law and the ongoing debatearound it.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's all about Consent.
I heard Professor Schulhofer present this book a few months back at the University of Chicago.Within it, he explains that our sexual assault laws are *not* founded on notions of consent, despite widespread popular beliefsto the contrary.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Black Eye for Wall Street
I found it difficult to put this book down, and I would have given it 5 stars if the ending wasn't so weak. The end left me hanging and was a little confusing with all of the names and trials.
1-0 out of 5 stars Kind of Relieving but sad
I read this book as I'm very familiar with the Brokerage Industry.I must say, while some of this is appalling, and people should never be treated poorly, it's relieving to know that there is a place where men are (were) still men.Men call each other disparaging remarks, call each other names, basically joke around and take it one step further.Unfortunately, women always want in, and it ends up ruining it for everyone. Any fun or solace we had is gone. It's a shame too, because those same women could have fun too and be "One of the guys" though fear of their lawsuits has now caused even the last bastion of men to fall. Why couldn't you just stick with Dr. Phil and leave us alone.Where can we hide from women and still be ourselves? Is there no place to go??Even better, why can't those women just join us, rather than fight us!It would seem the last place men can work and have fun, and at the same time have women having fun with them is the Man Show, or the Howard Stern show. I'm sorry that sounds so sad, but it's our truth.Time's have changed, and while our son's will never know it, it's our own fault for caving to their whims, little by little by little. It's a women's world! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doctrinaire rubbish
Don't fall for this. The authors are conservative propagandists who engage in the kind of fake scholarship that the American Enterprise Institute and its ilk specializes in. Remember when you were first learning to write a term paper and the teacher said "don't make the facts fit your argument; your argument has to rest on the facts"? Well the authors were busy running for class president and missed that little lesson. In their world, there is no reason to worry about discrimination laws, or social security, or poverty relief because no-one is ever destitute, excluded or unable to get decent work. Anyone with a passing acquaintance with reality can recognise this for the class warfare that it really is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women's Success Story
Anyone who appreciated Who Stole Feminism?, where Christina Hoff Sommers corrects what passes for feminist statistics will find plenty to love in these 123 pages.Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba explain with tons of data why the "wage gap" and "glass ceiling" are myths based on bad statistics and a less than thorough investigation of the facts. The authors spell out the truth, that we should be celebrating women's progress. Feminists should be bragging that women earn the majority of bachelor's and master's degrees and that women-owned businesses are growing faster than businesses overall instead of inventing discrimination where it clearly doesn't exist, as the stats in this book prove. This book should be required reading in women's studies classes, but unfortunately the half-truths often spread in such classes are the reason this book needed to be written in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable contribution of facts on a much debated subject.
Much of what we know about the economic status of women is summarized in this excellent monograph by Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba. It covers not only the so-called gender gap between men's and women's incomes, but also educational attainment, occupational choice and politicalinfluence.Understanding of the subject is enhanced by colorful charts. -Herbert Stein ... Editorial Review

Activist-scholar Angela Y. Davis was one of the most potent radical political symbols of the '70s, her defiantly clenched fist raised high over her reddish-brown, full-blown Afro. Her "celebrity" was launched when she was put on trial in 1972 in San Jose, California, for murder and kidnapping, charges on which she was later acquitted. This second edition of Bettina Aptheker's gut-wrenching chronicle of the Davis trial is a fact-filled boon to a younger generation imbued with the era's mythologies. With a strange cast of characters, including then-governor Ronald Reagan, Aptheker reveals heroes, villains, and brilliant legal work. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars WRITTEN UNDER DISCIPLINE
This book is undoubtedly rewarding reading, and yet it very much strikes the informed reader as having been created under [Communist Party, USA] discipline. As Aptheker notes in her introduction, she was a remember of the CPUSA's national commmittee when she wrote this book in 1973; it was first issued by the party's International Publishers two years later.Ironically, Aptheker lauds the socialist countries, especially the USSR, throughout her narrative. It's deeply regretable that Aptheker and her comrades protested the political incarceration of Davis and other U.S. militants and yet passively supported the repression meted out to Soviet and Czech dissidents during the same period.During an official visit to Czechoslavakia in 1972, Davis herself insisted that imprisoned rebels of the 1968 Prague Spring "deserved what they got" and should remain behind bars.As you read this book, I encourage you to keep the duality of such positions foremost in your mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Trial that should never have been
A fascinating account of the legalmanuveringthat quite possibly savedthe life of this extrordinary woman. The fact is there should never havebeen a trial in the first place. Asidefrom that we are given an inside viewof the the strategy invoked by thethe defense team. Howard Moore andMargaret Burnham are the mainlineplayers in the defense team. Angela'ssister Fania headed up the nationalmovement. I was most impressed withthe tremendous outpouring of support formall over the country. The book goesinto great detail cocerning Angela'sconnection with the Soledad brothersIt was her interest in their trialthat started this whole farce in thefirst place. If you believe as I dothat this beautiful woman was singledout because her views ran contraryto those of Richard Nixon and RonaldReagen then you will love this book.It wil make you mad and yet you willsee that perhaps justice can prevailafter-all

1-0 out of 5 stars Can Be Summarized in Two Sentences
Here's what the book is about: One, some nonwhite racial groups under some conditions can actually (gasp) dominate other nonwhite racial groups. Two, some nonwhite racial groups should apologize to make other nonwhite racial groups feel better.3-0 out of 5 stars a nice book if you are interested
Yamamoto looks at the history and significance of government's apologizing for past racist acts.It covers a span of topics from black slavery, Japanese interment, to Native Hawaiian colonialism.Though written by a law professor, the text is not case-heavy and could be digested by most every reader. It discusses some interesting concerns about person-of-color unity as well. Those interested in Asian/Pacific Islander studies may be particularly interested in this book. Some people may find the text too simple, especially those who view governmental apologies as ineffective. However, this book was a decent read generally. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful introduction into early years of feminism
As Jean Matthews demonstrates in this excellent survey, feminism has long been a controversial movement. From its origins in Enlightenment thinking, it has challenged longstanding beliefs about women and male-female relationships.Matthews' book offers a study of the emergence of the women's movement in mid-nineteenth century America, charting both its broader intellectual origins and the context of contemporary reform movements.
