lots of detail but not enough surprise
The book contains quite a bit of detail reflecting the author's ability for efficient and focused research.But the questions that she is pursuing, while potentially interesting to lay audiences and certainly socially important, aren't especially insightful, and accordingly, neither are the answers that she provides for them.The task that the author has set for herself is one that demands a strong propensity for the accumulation of detail (which is important) but the details themselves don't necessarily lead to the kinds of penetrating analysis that one might hope for in scholarly literature generally and especially this topic.

Scholarly but engaging

Simultaneously heartbreaking, infuriating, & hope-provoking
The quiet, measured, dignified prose style of the author, a sort of removed reportage, makes the horrors of discrimination in education, health-care, social life, employment, the world of entertainment, and so forth all the more starkly ugly, cruel, dangerous, and damaging.The damage, however, is not confined to those fat people who are so viciously discriminated against.It extends to almost everyone who is infected with fear and hatred of fat, everyone who would rather be blind or deaf or lose a limb than be fat, everyone who succombs to the blandishments of a greedy, fear-mongering, prejudice-supporing bariatric industry.In other words, we're all in this together and we've all got to get out of it together. And the legal considerations Solovay brings to our attention, the suggestions she makes about extending legal coverages against discrimination already in place, and the compassion she displays for victims make this book one of the important beginnings for recovery from anti-fat hysteria.Thank you for this book.

Another left-wing political rant from Berkeley
Sondra Solovay is a lawyer, author, lesbian, feminist, Berkeley-resident and obese person.Tipping the Scales of Justice is Sondra's activist war-cry describing how disenfranchised obese individuals are in American society.Sondra's personal politics come out in this book as she complains that "fat" people deserve to be accommodated for in every way imaginable.Sondra loves statistics and this book is full of them.Sondra shows that thin women make more money than fat women.Thin women are selected for jury duty more often than fat women, (so what? does anybody actually like jury duty?) She even goes so far as to label obesity descriminiation as the civil-rights issue of the century.This book attempts to deal with sensitive issues of teasing and hurt feelings but comes off as a long political rant about how everyone should cater to her because she's overweight.There are better books about the subject, such as those written for the clinical psychology field regarding female body image. ... A GRIPPING TALE
Judge Law's book, Sex Appealed, is a well-documented and researched investigation of the facts behind Lawrence v. Texas supporting her conclusion of invited arrests. It is a gripping tale. The National Press Club selected Sex Appealed as one of sixty books (out of 600 submitted) featured in its 2005 Book Fair and Authors' Night in Washington, D.C.
a rant disguised as a book
Ms. Law is shocked--shocked!--that some people may have wanted to challenge laws criminalizing private sexual behavior. She conveniently ignores that truth that many important cases, including the case that decriminalized birth control in 1965, are actively sought.

I hated this book
I was opposed to hate crime legislation before I read this book.However, I thought that maybe the wisdom of Frederick M. Lawrence (B.A. Williams, J.D. Two uneasy books in one
Neiwert tries to be two things at once -- a storyteller as well as an advocate for hate crimes laws -- and the result is a muddled effort. He interweaves the chapters with social science discussions of hate crimes and ongoing news of the trial. In addition, he repeats himself (especially the trial portion), and the book feels padded. The story itself is no more than a long magazine article, and the characterizations of the main two actors are thin. As a courtroom drama, the story lacks suspense.

I was hooked
The town's derisive nickname "Open Sores" could certainly serve as the subtitle for the book.

The first half of the book was pretty good and pretty accurate.It describes what I have always felt - that most businesses do a very poor job at attempting to tack diversity.While it does have some good tips, the last half of the book is more of a solicitation for their "tool."
