5-0 out of 5 stars An Inexorable Element of Gay Studies
Vern's introduction credited me with suggesting that he replace Wayne Dynes, after Dynes resigned, as the editor of Before Stonewall.I'm happy that John De Cecco, the editor at Haworth, accepted my suggestion.John, who has edited the Journal of Homosexuality and a number of other Haworth Journal and series, is beyond question the most important gay editor since Magnus Hirschhfeld. He has made the Journal the place of record for gay studies, and Vern Bullough, with over fifty books to his credit is also the leading living historian of sex. Both of those scholars have braved the slings and arrows of the religious right, the child abuse industry, and others suffering from sexual panic. They did a splendid job on this much needed work, which contradicts the present-minded, now the vast majority of the gay rights movement, who maintain that nothing significant happened before Stonewall.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Collection!
A collection of fascinating personal stories of individual and collection action against injustice! This book dispels myths that give central location to the Stonewall rebellion, showing instead a much more complex history of activism for gay and lesbian rights. Although the biographies are uneven (some are too short, and some are written by their subjects' partners, hence too celebratory), most of these approximately forty biographies show the successes and charms, foibles and failures of a remarkable group of people -- gay, lesbian, bisexual, heterosexual, transgendered, non-transgendered -- who all made a tremendous difference in the quality of life possible for gays and lesbians in the United States today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable documentation of a major social movement
Launched a half-century ago, the American gay and lesbian rights movement has achieved a remarkable success. Its influence has spread throughout the world, contributing enormously to the happiness, productivity, and self-esteem of homosexual citizens elsewhere. For the most part, those who launched this wonderful development in the 1950s did not realize, or did not record, the essence of their achievement. They were too busy doing their work. Now, under the guidance of Vern Bullough, a major scholar in the field, it has been written down.In biographies of some forty individuals, many fascinating in their own right, the story is told.It is as if one received a whole raft of biographies in one volume! This book must be seen and read in order to understand its remarkable contribution, a contribution that is significant for all of us. ... When I bought this book I had no background in Law whatsoever. This book was excellent for me because it is very easy to understand and it provides the reader with examples so that on learns how to apply the concepts being taught. Keep in mind that this is a public health law book, but it provides one with the basic concepts and vocabulary one needs to understand it (make sure to read the preface and introduction first). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely patronizing book
Chesler's tone is so patronizing here. Third wave feminists did not just step out of a cave, the older amongst us (those now in our later 30's to early 40's like myself)saw these events unfold as children and it's throughly seared in our minds. Ms. Chesler ignores the fact that in the 1987 March for Reproductive Rights on Washington DC, in which 500,000 women marched, 2/3 were then under 30 years old (the third wave feminists, this was our first major- in numbers present, activist appearence) This book tempted me to write a letter FROM a young feminist. But I decided not to, because if Ms. Chesler was determined to ignore third wave feminists, despite much activism by us, a letter refuting her claims of our ignorance wasn't going to open her eyes. Readers are better to choose books by second wave feminists that are better written and informed, like Gloria Steinem's. I'd also recommend books by older third wavers like Naomi Wolf and Susan Faludi.

1-0 out of 5 stars Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
I had to read this for my Women's Studies class and I was deeply bored by this trite and unengaging collection of essays of past mistakes by feminists of the past. It is filled with typical man-hating that feminists are stereotyped for. Trust me, if I didn't have to read this for class, I would have never read it at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Patronizing and inept
In this offering, Chesler, the author of 1972's ground breaking "Women and Madness" attempts to connect with my generation and inspire us to become better activists from her mistakes. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete statutory guide without case law
Judge Richard Posner of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and Professor Katharine Silbaugh of Boston University's law school undertaken an impressive task, and they have done half the job very well."A Guide to America's Sex Laws" is an exhaustive survey of the existing statutes from all fifty states (and the federal government where applicable) for crimes from rape to sodomy to necrophilia.A single volume containing every statute is indeed a valuable resource, but there is a serious problem.Statutes require judicial interpretation, and this book provides very little explanation toward that end.Though each chapter (devoted to a particular offense) includes a brief, survey introduction, the introductions do not provide much help for a reader seeking to know, for example, how Montana courts have interpreted the phrase "deviate sexual relations."As a reference, "A Guide to America's Sex Laws" serves as a good starting point, but the serious researcher will have to use other sources to supplement this text. ... Editorial Review

There's no question that nowadays, racial issues pose one of the biggest obstacles to the fair workings of our criminal justice system, but exactly how these issues come into play and what to do about them is a subtler matter. In this book, Kennedy, a Harvard Law School professor who is black, applies his precise command of the relevant legal language and legal background to explain and evaluate for the general reader various current ideas about how race is and should be involved in meting out criminal justice. His basic stance is that liberals and conservatives have more common ground on race and law than it seems at first, and that blacks have suffered more from being underprotected by law enforcement than from being mistreated as suspects or defendants, even though it is the latter allegation that seems to draw the most attention from those who view the courts through racial lenses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Race, Crime, and the Law
Excellent review of sensitive issues regarding race, ethnicity, and the criminal justice system!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work that delves deeply into the topic
This lucid work of kennedy's is a comprehensive and beautifully written examination of race and its ralation to the criminal justice system and the law. Kennedy's arguments are superb, and he supports everything that he says with hard evidence, leaving his sound biases and premises the only things left to be considered. Kennedy is, even in this last matter, careful to make this book an exploration rather than a persuasion, and while he does make arguements and try to persuade the reader, he does not condemn his opposition and he certainly does not limit the scope of his thinking in any way possibly detrimental to the flow of ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is
Schools in America have always taught us with blindfolds on. It's up to the American people, [mainly people of color] to find the truth. The negative race relation state that America is today, is a direct result of the pre 1900's.Randall Kennedy shows us in this book how slanted the laws were during slavery times and what do you know, things haven't changed all that much. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Putting a landmark case in context
This book looks at the case of Brown vs. Board of Education that outlawed segregation in schools 50 years ago this month. The actual case only takes up several chapters in the middle of the book. What is important is that the book tries to put the case in terms of legal, and societal, context. Chapters leading up speak about the legal challenges to segregation that appeared in the 50 prior years since Plessy v. Ferguson enshrined the doctrine of "separate but equal" in our nation's laws. Because law is built upon precedence, these cases mark the stones on which the group of cases, eventually to be grouped under Brown, would stand. The authors take us inside the Supreme Court and helps analyze the decision making process, and examine the subsequent practices and pitfalls of the implementation of that decision. It is a case that even a half century later the repercussions are still felt in America. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but does not focus on Brown v. Board of Education
When one sees the title "Brown v. Board of Education", it immediately stirs up notions of a Supreme Court case involving desegregation of public schools in America.Robert Cottol, Raymond Diamond, and Leland Ware have given us some of that feel, but not enough in this book.Read more

Editorial Review

Nolo Press legal guides provide useful and accurate information on how to manage your own affairs or, failing this, how to hire a lawyer and negotiate the court system. The rapid changes in gay and lesbian life in the past 30 years have not been reflected in the legal codes of most states, and without enforceable written agreements, gay and lesbian people may find such crucial matters as inheritance, legal guardianship, child custody, and support left to the whim of a judge or state agency. As the writers of this volume (first published in 1980) point out, "married couples' relationships are defined by law," while lesbian and gay couples have the freedom--and responsibility--to create their own legal relationships. Agreements drawn up in advance provide guidance for a time when all is not moonbeams and madness. Tear-out forms and sample documents are included. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I couldn't disagree more with the previous review.I think Dubber's presentation is singularly well thought out, and constitutes the only work on this subject that can be fairly described as even handed. My personal biases run in the opposite direction of the previous reviewer and I think it is telling that I occasionally found it frustrating because it seemed to favor the other side. What better evidence could there be of its neutrality?1-0 out of 5 stars Victims in the War on Crime
This is a book based on the bias of the author. Poorly researched and presumptive, it is filled with assumptions. Victims are assumed to be vindictive and out for blood and offenders are assumed to be ignored by the system, now, supposedly focused on victim's rights. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just as there are as many kinds of offenders and reasons for their offenses, so are there a variety of opinions within the victim's rights movement. Not all victims are in favor of the death penalty and capital punishment was never the issue in most of the cases cited. Laws passed, like Jenna's Law and Megan's Law were safety issues and had nothing whatsoever to do with capital punishment, yet they are both used as examples of the bloodlust of victims and survivors. 5-0 out of 5 stars a basic book about fundamental rights' theory
Robert Alexy is professor at Kiel University and this is perhaps his most important book. It's actually one of the basic books written in the world-wide legal theory about the fundamental rights. But it's not a book only for legal philosophers, but it's a fundamental book for the lawyer, the judge or the jurists concerned about Constitutional Law.Read more

Ancheta does not pull any punches. This is a serious book and it deals with serious issues.Race, Rights and the Asian American Experience is defined by its strong views and lucidity. Ancheta offers a sketch of the history of discrimination against Asian Americans, this writer suggests though that for a more robust narrative the reader would have to turn to the likes of Ronald Takaki and tackle something in the area of Stranger's From a Different Shore.Ancheta moves to outline what he defines as a legal subordination of Asian Americans. Deftly articulating the insidious impact of nativism on race relations and the production of citizenship. Ancheta leaves no one out as he takes aim at the very Constitution itself outlining that it "can... restrict the scope of anti-discrimination laws." Ancheta argues that all these so called anti-discrimination laws do not consider the inherent racial bias contained therein.Ancheta sees race as a dynamic, social construction as opposed to something intrinsic or natural. Moreover, Ancheta points to the shifts in the demographic landscape as perhaps the single most significant force responsible for problematizing the black-white bifurcation. As a case in point, in Ho v. San Francisco "model minority" is a handicap to those defined as such.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
