Thorough yet disturbing discussion of 'justice'...
While there are probably very few people who think justice is truly blind to race, gender, class and sexual orientation, this look at the courts from Restoration until today is still shocking. The systemic protection of 'white male privilege' has made it impossible for just about anyone and everyone to get a fair trial. And throughout this book Berry argues convincingly, logically, simply and clearly why this has been the case. An eloquent exposition.
The "Pig Farmer's Daughter" is a stalwart exposition describing the fault line of bigotry, and bias that runs through the historical bedrock of the American judicial system. Berry offers a seamless narrative,written eloquently and without malice. Her book is an irrefutable unveilingof the ignorance that so often poses as the truth of popular culture. Disgusting
This entire book is disgusting. The facts are skewed in every case to favor the CRIMINAL.Folks, when someone has a gun and has hurt someone else or is threating to hurt a cop, HE IS A CRIMINAL. About the intellectual look at the Patriot Act....
With the act now failing in the Congress not to renew it, this book offers a look at the act.How American it is or not.And wither we would be better off going back to the drawing board to devise a more effective policy while also remaining true to the ideals that the nation was build on.

The Most Precious Thing We Have Is Our Freedom
America is about our freedom. It is the most important thing we have. The slogan on the New Hampshire license tells how very important our freedom is. It reads "Live Free or Die." If the American people allow fear to change their thinking - it will be a very sad day. Fear of terrorism could very well be far more dangerous to us than actual terrorism.

This book is far from definitive, but is a good start. If the educational reformers wanted to really make positive change occur, they would find a way to put this book in the hands of every high school government teacherin the United States. Constitutional Law Textbook being put to use frequently
I am currently using this textbook for my Constitutional Law class at Winthrop University, and i would like to comment that the book is very well written and easily read.The one problem that i have is that the Opinions of the court are not complete, but only the highlights have been stated, as completely understandable, but I find the extra information also informative when trying to write papers on the Opinions, not just the highlights.I otherwise think that the book is superb and quite helpful in my class. ... I agree with the previous review. It's a decent piece for the fact you get contributions from a variety of brothers on some topics. It's a piece I finished somewhat quick, and you should be able to recognize a few of the authors in the book.

Elegant as silk, sharp as a scalpel
Kenji Yoshino's book manages a difficult feat: it is simultaneously elegant and hard-hitting. Yoshino, a professor at Yale Law School, blends memoir and legal history as he charts the changing attitude of American society toward homosexuality. Formerly, gays were treated as if they had a deadly disease--if they were not willing to change, forcible means such as lobotomy and electroshock therapy were at hand to "convert" them. Next, they were left alone as long as they were willing to hide their sexuality. The riots of Stonewall and the AIDS plague were watersheds in changing this attitude, as gay men and women demanded to be recognized as such AND treated as human beings.
Insightful and much needed
Yoshino is one of the brightest stars in civil rights discussion. I found his book insightful and even necessary for any real progress to be made for civil rights for all people.

What a career!
I found the personal coming out to his parents story very moving; it brought tears to my eyes.I also loved the epilogue and the story of the blue star.But, in between, what a lot of navel-gazing and counting of angels on the head of a pin.I'm a lawyer, but I admit I got lost in all the differentiations and attempts to focus the covering/reverse-covering analysis on each type of discrimination.Then, halfway-through, I learn he was only in law school in the 1990s.I've been practicing longer than that and he's the Harvard professor!(I realize that's a comment on me.)This guy has really carved out a self-referential niche for himself. ... lots of detail but not enough surprise
The book contains quite a bit of detail reflecting the author's ability for efficient and focused research.But the questions that she is pursuing, while potentially interesting to lay audiences and certainly socially important, aren't especially insightful, and accordingly, neither are the answers that she provides for them.The task that the author has set for herself is one that demands a strong propensity for the accumulation of detail (which is important) but the details themselves don't necessarily lead to the kinds of penetrating analysis that one might hope for in scholarly literature generally and especially this topic.

Scholarly but engaging
Professor Bell carefully chronicles the work of a hate crime unit in a major metropolitan area.Her work offers careful detail of the type of crimes encountered, decisions investigate and charge suspects, and even the varied outlook of different cops within the unit. Provocative & Engaging

Indispensable analysis
To the list of casualties in America's so-called war on terror must be added the civil rights of Arabs and Muslims living in the United States. Boosted by the tragedies of 9/11, neoconservatives in and around the government have pursued a zealous strategy of curtailing everyone's civil liberties and broadcasting stereotypes of violence-prone Islam.
