5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and inspiring
Ed Cleary has provided an informative glimpse into what it takes to get a controversial case to the United States Supreme Court. Disappointed by the ACLU's obvious preference for agenda over free speech, Cleary battled St. Paul's "hate crime" statute, arguing that he had no problem with laws which punished criminal acts, but serious reservations over laws which punished incorrect thought. Paul J. Walkowski, Co-Author, "From Trial Court to the United States Supreme Court" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Racial Alibi Eliminated
Since the Civil Rights Movement it seems most "Whites" and amazingly even some "Blacks" have bought the argument that slavery and its legacy were so long ago that no living African-American could rightfully claim being a victim of it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for American History classes
This wellwritten and extensively researched book reveals not only the drive and persistence of post-Civil War African Americans in seeking reparations for ex-slaves and war veterans, but what can be accomplished with little more than a basic ability to read and write and a talent for organizing and motivating one's colleagues. Callie House is truly an American heroine and her efforts to help black citizens obtain what they richly deserved from the U.S. government, despite obstacles which would have made a lesser person roll over, should be recognized and remembered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exonerate Callie House
This book is powerful and sadly overdue. Who knew that ex-slaves fought for reparations themselves right after emancipation? As an American, I am outraged to learn that the United States government denied them their First Amendment right to petition the government for reparations by falsely imprisoning all the movement's leaders! I am also amazed to learn that the first mass movement of Black people for justice in this country was led by a woman -- Callie House. She and all those imprisoned for this well organized, peaceful, and just effort must be exonerated. Our President and the Members of Congress can and must exonerate them now!

I just finished Evan Wolfson's Why Marriage Matters, and although I am salivating at the thought of spending the rest of my night immersed in a tirade that focuses on what this book lacks, I will limit myself to describing one and only one glaring deficiency. Here it is. Come election time much of the hoopla surrounding gay marriage rights stems directly from those Christian conservatives that consider themselves among the moral elite. The self-described Christian "moral majority" is surprisingly effective at turning what is actually a civil rights and anti-discrimination issue into a moral issue. Because this is the nature of the one of the most powerful forces that is against us, if we are to put gay marriage rights on firm footing, the foundation must be a moral one. Granted, there is probably little hope for the hardcore dogmatists, but let's suppose they are all old and on the cusp of a trek through the pearly gates of heaven. Aside from those people, I am convinced that social conservatives can be convinced. Now, it would be nice if we could make all our very well-justified legal arguments in favor of gay marriage, be granted our legal rights, and be done with it. But, if we are going to gain any legal ground in conservative states, we must present damn good arguments that show three things: 1) one's sexual orientation is not a lifestyle choice, 2) same-sex sex is not morally wrong, and 3) same-sex marriage is not morally wrong. Wolfson doesn't do either in Why Marriage Matters. I was hoping he would give a point-by-point rebuttal of all the arguments from moral depravity that are flung like mud on groups of people who express a non-heteronormative sexualty, but I was disappointed. Maybe someday soon somebody will do us this service. But enough of that. On a positive note, Wolfson's book was easy to read. On another positive note, he drew strong analogies between the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s and the gay rights movement of the last two decades. One thing that becomes apparrent as we consider the parallels between these two movements is how badly the gay civil rights movement needs a leader like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good primer on the next major civil rights issue
Do gays have the right to marry? This is emerging as the next civil rights issue to cross the American political scene.Attorney Evan Wolfson answers this question with a resounding yes, and uses this book to back up his answer. His central point is that marriage is a relationship, and being in it can and does bring joy to gay couples just as much as it does to heterosexual couples. And since the Declaration of Independence states that all humans have the right to the pursuit of happiness, government should not prevent two individuals from getting married. The author also examines other issues regarding gay marriage, such as child adoption, insurance benefits, gay divorces, inheritance rights, etc...The author also takes on arguments against gay marriage, and refutes them using historical and legal arguments. All in all, a good book to help understand the current, and growing issue of gay marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book there is on why marriage is for ALL Americans
Evan Wolfson's book turned me into a believer. Even after seven years of sharing my life with the man I want to spend the rest of my life with, I still didn't think it mattered whether we were married or not. "Why Marriage Matters" changed that -- we had to fly to Canada to get married, but we did what we had to do, and now I've found that marriage has made every facet of our relationship stronger and better. Read this book and you'll begin to see that marriage does matter, and that, frankly, it is un-American to deny any segment of the population basic human rights and priveleges that the United States was created to protect for all its citizens. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for those interested in Native American studies
This is a well-researched, highly readable, yet scholarly treatment of a timely subject that is sure to attract attention in the coming years. The authors review often competing legal precedents in Federal law as they relate to Indian legal issues and find that inconsistencies, including varied interpretations together with the age old imbalance of power, has resulted in justice for American Indians being built on a bed of sand that is unfair, unpredictable, and in need of clarification. The book includes a thorough discussion on the Doctrine of Discovery, the Trust Doctrine, the Doctrine of Plenary Power, and the Doctrine of Soverign Immunity and is highly recommended for those readers interested in this expanding area of Native American studies. These are the kind of issues that led to the Wounded Knee disaster of the 1970s. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL HISTORY
Civic Ideals is a book every american should read.Prof.Smith has demonstrated clearly how trough history the United States have had diferents meanings about the citizenship. In the case of Puerto Rico-the last colony of the world-we the Puerto Ricans have a second-class citizenship. The author sumarize very well our case with the insular cases and Balzac vs. People of Puerto Rico. Also Smith analize the legal debate in the Harvard Law Review, but do not mention the Yale Law Journal(Adams,Elmer B.,"The Causes and Results of Our War with Spain from a legal Standpoint."VII(1899),pag.119 and Parker,Le Roy,"The Constitution of Porto Rico",X (1901),pag.136.)and Columbia Law Review;Fuller,Paul,"Some Constitutional Questions Suggested by Recent Acquisitions"I(1901),pag.108).For people who want to know the real constitutional history of The United States this book is excellent. Is one of my favorites books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chronicles of anti-Christian bigotry
How can someone possibly manage to fill a 400-page book with example after example of Christians being persecuted in the United States? Only if there happens to be a whole lot of cases of Christian persecution. And that is just what Limbaugh demonstrates in this frightening but much-needed book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Forgive them, Father for the Conservatives know not what they do....
Yes, I am a Christian, and I believe in all of the teachings of christianity. But I do not support the conservative's constant attack of democratic liberals.... it's the simple example of stereo-typing. I can garantee there are millions of atheist conservative republicans... I used to have a friend who was. This book is trying to make democrats look bad by using the atheists of the left against them. That's similar to Southern Black discrimination... everyone tought they were lower and disgusting because they used to be slaves. But that wasn't what they were on the inside.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful book about the oppression of Christianity
Persecution: How Liberals are Waging War Against Christianity by David Limbaugh is the book that liberals should be worried about. While Ann Coulter's Godless is getting all the press, it's this book that should have them shaking in their shoes.Limbaugh doesn't use hysterical vitriolic name-calling to get his point across, he uses facts and builds his case slowly, brick by brick. He's like a prosecutor bringing forth each piece of evidence and allowing the jury to see it and listen to each witness and allowing them to make their own judgment. Many of the cases do quote the same lawyers again and again, but that really can't be helped when there are only a few groups defending the rights of Christians to express their views. The book shows case after case in schools, workplaces, and the government in which Christianity is not just being suppressed but oppressed. The good news that in many of the actual court cases, the court upheld the rights of Christians. The bad news is that most people don't bring court cases, they just quietly fold up and give in.These court cases are the exception proving the rule, and the liberals are going to continue pushing and pushing because they know that most people will give in without a fight.Limbaugh also does a great job at the end of the book proving that America was founded on Christian principles by Christian men who never intended for Christianity to be hounded out of American life. This is a good book for everyone to read. It's one of the few books that just might change people's minds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Work That Should Not Be Missed
This work is full of interesting, insightful, and provocative ideas that will make readers rethink the impact of the Supreme Court's civil rights decisions.I predict that the revisionist arguments in this masterpiece will some day become the orthodoxy. This book will be read by many future generations of American history and law students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a masterpiece
Having had the opportunity to hear Professor Klarman speak, I knew before reading the book that it would be a great work of scholarship.I was blown away.Meticulously researched, eminently readable, and full of the details necessary to support any conclusions about that troubling time in American history. It's a must read for every law student, historian, and American.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and interesting
A comprehensive account not just of civil rights legal history, but also the political and social context that Klarman shows were never far in the background of court decisions regarding civil rights. The book doesn't just chronical events, but uses history to test and illustrate theories for why courts decide cases as they do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cooler heads did prevail....
As recent history attests to, some people act irrationally when under conditions of stress, and frequently do not hesitate to deny others basic human rights or even react violently. This kind of behavior does not occur under normal conditions of life, so the trick is get back into mental equilibrium as soon as possible after the shocks have occurred. The time needed to do this varies considerably between individuals, and the individuals who are having trouble calming themselves put undue burdens on those who do not. Therefore there is usually a considerable amount of tension between these two types of people, and this in fact creates more stress on top of what was experienced by the original shocks.
5-0 out of 5 stars compelling, inspiring analysis of free speech during times of war
Throughout Geoffrey Stone's engrossing examination of free speech during times of war, two crucial conclusions emerge. Both drive from an explanation articulated by Justice Louis in 1927:"fear breeds repression" and "courage is the secret of liberty."Exquisitely researched, gracefully written and forcefully argued, "Perilous Times" is a compelling exploration of the First Amendment in wartime.Professor Stone, through argument and anecdotal evidence, develops a convincing thesis that the American people, hesitatingly and often with frustrating slowness, have embraced not only the right, but the need, to honor dissent during times of national emergency. This is a hard-earned victory for free speech, one gained only through the raw and open courage of dissidents and the often underestimated and unseen courage of jurists who stood for principle when it mattered most."Perilous Times" is an unusual historical analysis; its scholarship is meticulous, making it an academician's treasure, and its narrative drive is irresistible, welcoming a large audience to its research and understandings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Suppressing speech in wartime is a nearly universal error
A government's most dangerous action is to send its citizens off to fight a war, and decisions with such consequence should not be made lightly. They should be made by a Congress informed by the views of the citizenry. This requires open and robust debate--including, at times, speech that opposes the war, or the government fighting it. Stone's book is a wonderful historical survey of government's efforts at suppressing speech when we are at war. It documents not only what happened, but also makes it ever so clear that such suppression was in universal error. The book also shows how bad decisions and policy about freedom of speech were made and formed during war. Stone's book teaches that it is our responsibility to formulate a responsible free speech policy in times of (relative) peace, and hold to it even when we are at war. ... Read more

The first time I saw the behaviour of Nazi soldiers in Schindlers List I said to myself "they remind me of the cadets in the Lords of Discipline".The Lords of Discipline is fictional account of the Citadel.A fact was confirmed after seeing pictures ofCitadel cadets dressed up as Nazi's in their yearbook.1-0 out of 5 stars I am amazed
I am amazed at the content of this book. What Miss Faulkner did is important. It was the proper time for women to be admited to The Citadel. However Miss Faulkner was the wrong women. She repesented her entire gender horribly when she arrived at the school. She was not at all prepared for the hardships of knob year. She was a embaressment to all women. Miss Faulkner stayed at the actual Citadel for 4 hours before she quit. The rest of her hell week was spent in the infirmary where her tender nerves were attended to. She did this to prove a point and all she did was embaress herself and her gender. The author takes a view of someone who has heard only the bad facets of the school, but that is to be expected considering who provided her information.2-0 out of 5 stars So, What Happened to Shannon?
Title sounded like a good book for our AAUW book group - a woman facing an all-male educational establishment in the conservative South.A great deal of Southern/Charleston history thrown in - interesting, but besides establishing what most students of history already knew, had little to do with Ms. Faulkner's story.Never got to know her as a person, and court dialogue not included at all in this book.Where were the taunts, controversy, the meat of the trial? Was Ms. Faulkner suffering from heat exhaustion (and if so, why was she so physically out of shape, given she'd had 3+ yrs. to prepare for Hell Week), or was it an emotional breakdown/letdown after all those years of fighting?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tragedy and Triumph
This is certainly one of the best books I've ever read. Jack Olsen did an outstanding job of weaving together all the facts in a highly readable narrative of one of the most blatant chapters of injustice in 20th century legal history.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Cure for Your Despair
The courage and essential goodness of Geronimo Pratt, in spite of receiving a life sentence for a crime he did not commit, is truly inspiring. This is a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, Amazing man
Geronimo Pratt had one of the most honorable and incredible lives I have ever heard of. This book documents his entire life, from is Morgan City childhood to his unjust incarceration for the murder of Caroline Olsen. I literally had trouble putting this book down. It is a great read for anyone interested in the judicial system, the FBI's COINTELPRO, the Black Panther Party, and racism in general. READ THIS BOOK!!! ... Read more
