5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource in Indian law
This is an excellent resource in federal Indian law. It is updated annually via cumulative pocket-parts and is a thorough review of the subject. It is a great place to begin research in Indian law because it lays out the blackletter and has copious citations to the major (and sometimes less major) cases on the subject. For me, if I could have only one book on the subject, this would be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important and useful source for federal Indian law
Federal Indian law is a quagmire that demands useful navigational tools. In the past, Felix Cohen's "Handbook of Federal Indian Law" (particularly the 1942 ed.) was used by everyone - including Supreme Court Justices - to better understand this jurisprudence. This field of law, however, has evolved in many ways in the intervening twenty years and the "American Indian Law Deskbook" permits readers to learn about these changes in the responsibilities and exposures of the states, tribes, and federal government. Indeed, this is the second edition, and the foreword indicates that even the five-year period between editions had been eventful. The overall intent of this publication is to present relevant legal history to sustain an understanding of Indian law today.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars an okay read for a controversial topic
Moran is a biracial Latina law professor examining the issue of interracial relations in the United States. She starts by suggesting that analyzing race separatism must not end with segregation in schools and housing; we must look at the personal choices of marriage and adoption as well. She gives a history of race-mixing and prohibitions against it, the Loving decision which made such marriages legal in this country, and the modern continuance of most people's choosing same-race coupling. This book was more historical and statistical, rather than legal.Moran does an excellent job of looking at Blacks, Latinos, Asians, and Natives equally. The book is neither as pessimistic as "Jungle Fever" or as optimistic as "Fools Rush In".This book will validate and challenge readers of all racial backgrounds. My only criticism is that the book is disturbingly heterosexist.Moran's refusal to look at interracial relationships among gay men and lesbians borders on homophobia.Otherwise, this was a decent book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
You can only admire a group of people who defend the bill of rights. It isfashionable to defend the ten commandments, but if you defend the billof rights, you are called every namein the book.I salute the ACLU andanybodyelse who defends the rights ofAmerica.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good stand alone review of the ACLU
While written as a companion book to the PBS broadcast of the same name it stands alone as an adequate, spritely written review of the ACLU's history.Like a skipping stone, it moves over their troubled waters, brieflytouching upon both the high and low points of their past eforts.Notmeaning to represent itself as a complete analysis of the ACLU, Garey, nonethe less, has written an entertaining and thoughtful book.It will serveas an excellent introduction to the complex entity the ACLU has become.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
Garey's history shows the ACLU's most magnificnent victories as well as the organization's most inglorious warts. This book makes history of civil liberties in America come alive. The stories are gripping. The writingsparkles. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative But In Dire Need of Editing
In reading Gardner's book, I learned a lot about Truman's impressive record as a civil rights advocate during his tenure as president.Gardner presents more than ample evidence to support his thesis that HST demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Black civil rights, despite weak (white) public interest in this issue and the political risks of alienating a powerful block of Dixiecrats. He is successful in describing the many facets of racism -- rigid segregation, voter intimidation, lynching, all-white juries, etc. -- that African Americans encountered as they returned home after presumably fighting for 'freedom and democracy' in WWII. Truman, he aptly shows, refused to ignore the glaring contradiction between U.S. ideals and practices, and understood that racism on the home front undermined the country's foreign policy goals.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Story about a True Civil Rights Hero
I bought this book after seeing Mr. Gardner on CNN and I couldn't stop reading it until I was done.As a native Missourian, Gardner eloquently tells the story of a brilliant, humble President who is our Country's little known civil rights hero.Gardner does a masterful job detailing Truman's politically fearless efforts while marvelously weaving in Truman's personal letters, thoughts and life experiences.Gardner captures Truman's political triumphs and personal victories brilliantly.Truman and Gardner's book make me proud to be a Missourian.I highly recommend this book to everyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Do The Subject Justice
Gardner has examined one facet of Harry Truman, probably the most important and significant facet of Truman's time in office, which was his willingness to risk power for a moral imperative - the equality of all Americans.Even though David McCullough talks about it in his book "Truman," HST still has received far too little credit for his role as a major catalyst of the civil rights movement, mainly because it didn't "take root" for about ten years after he left office. But this in no way detracts from the significance of Truman's courage, which was demonstrated by his willingness to split the Democratic party and thereby risk the 1948 election for what he felt was something that was not only politcally necessary for the future effectiveness of the United States as a model of democracy, but, quite simply, morally right (although unpopular). It was HST's Civil Rights Commission along with his Executive Order integrating the armed forces that finally gave the US Civil Rights movement the inertia it needed to overcome the heavy gravity of American tradition which was still flourishing in the form of "Jim Crow."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Totalitarian'= 'total control of your reading habits'
This is a thorough history and expose of the fine print in the Patriot Act, with the consequences for libraries, librarians and students in universities. The author details the history of the earlier attempts in this line, such as the FBI's Library Awareness Program, which were shot down, but obviously 9/11 gave some people the green light to try again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A salient assessment of the politics of homosexuality
Mohr writes an engaging and intellectually stimulating work that examines the ethical and philosophical imperatives behind equality for homosexuals in America. His sound "compare/contrast" methodology of ethical reflection exposes the selective and arbitrary nature of the efforts by certain forces in America to resist gay rights. He lays out compelling suggestions for the direction that gay activism must move to continue to be relevent and empowered in modern America. He neither caters to the powerful gay left paradigm nor walks the safe path of gradualism. His ideas, for the most part, make sense in a way that the reader will find him/herself exclaiming at various points, "Of course! That is exactly what needs to happen."His work suffers in two areas. He is a member of the academic elite in the purest sense of the word. His expressed disdain for the very students he is responsible to teach leaves a bad taste in this reviewer's mouth, at least.More critical to the substance of his work is the manner in which he allows his personal religious views to affect his arguments. His own distaste for organized religion leads him to conclude that religious gays should step aside and not participate in the struggle for gay rights, their best intentions not withstanding. This is an incredibly weak argument and stands out drastically when compared to the rest of his argument which is sound and balanced. He argues that gay Christian activism only invites the Religious Right into the debate in an arena where they have the upper hand.He could not be more wrong, but his lack of understanding of the religious issues leaves him unable to see the incredible importance of maintaining a strong religious argument that challenges the religious rhetoric of the Right using shared values and language.Overall, however, I have yet to read a more powerful look into the future of a successful gay rights movement. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars gay rights from a global perspective
This anthology is similar to many books on gay rights from an international perspective.I found it particularly useful for its article on the founding of a gay rights group in Bolivia. Those interested in international human rights may find this a useful text.Development studies scholars may like it as well. There is better stuff out there, but this is a pretty good book. ...
