Editorial Review

"This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren ... should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties." So wrote John Jay, one of the revolutionary authors of Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Spark Some Thought
"The disciplined armies always kept on foot on the continent of Europe, though they bear a malignant aspect to liberty and oeconomy, have notwithstanding been productive of the signal advantage, of rendering sudden conquests impracticable, and of preventing that rapid desolation, which used to mark the progress of war, prior to their introduction." I assume this is a quote from the federalist papers. Nevertheless, I had some interesting thoughts from the passage and wish to expound.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent material, difficult to read
I rate this book 5 stars because the content is so vital to understanding what our founding fathers were thinking as they tried to convince the Americans in New York that a "Foederal" government, rather than individual states or territories, was the best way to bring the new union together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classical political work that was vital in ratification of the Constitution
When Hamilton began the Federalist papers there were many anti- Federalists in the land urging against ratification of the Constitution. It was 1787, and Hamilton enlisted John Jay and James Madison to work with him on the papers. In the end there were eighty- five papers, five written by Jay, twenty- eight( most probably) by Madison and the rest by Hamilton.

3-0 out of 5 stars I finished with more questions than answers.
I am on an endless quest, it seems; to find a book on the administrative state that is informative while being at least mildly enthusiastic about its subject. This book starts out enthusiastic. This book certainly started with enthusiasm. The first chapter, in fact, is devoted to convincing us why the administrative state is a superb American invention (a view I do not always share!) Chapter 5, which is devoted to public participation in the Admin. state also bubbles with giddiness.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is destined to be a classic management text
This is destined to become one of the classic management texts. I found the authors treatement of the subject matter to be insightful and well thought out. This is a must for any person of color who is wondering whyit's taking them so long to move into the executive level. As a trainer Iwill be using this as one of my texts, and I plan on sending a number ofcopies to my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it
I just finished reading Breaking Through and learned quite a bit. Recommend it to you. I wish the subject of leadership, and how to properly use it to get results on the job, was addressed more.I recommend you alsoget a copy of another book that addresses this issue and is very applicableto the subject of minorities as leaders:"The Leader's Guide: 15Essential Skills." It's at Amazon too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
This book was somewhat useful, but I found it to be not as helpful as a Gilberts Law Summary. The "Nutshell" was, in some places, just as confusing and convoluted as the case book. But it was very helpful in assisting me to understand some of the basic concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Ad Law Book You'll Ever Need
The Administrative Law Nutshell was instrumental to my success in my administrative law class.Gellhorn and Levin (mostly Levin) provide a concise and careful analysis of the often-feared administrative law procedures. The authors provide step-by-step examples and supporting material to help the reader better understand everything from the general principles of administrative law to the dreaded state and local agency procedures. I still keep the Ad Law Nutshell in my office in case of emergencies.A great source for quick and clear answers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every citizen should read this book
This is the best book I have seen on this topic. Through a very concise and logical presentation, it answers objections from those who are opposed to legislating morality and those that question whether political activism is a proper focus of Christians. A brief history lesson helps put things in perspective. Legislating religion vs. legislating morality is also covered, as are short sections on specific moral issues like abortion and homosexuality. Appendixes include the Declaration of Independence and Amendments to the Constitution.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book Debunks Separation of Church and State
Many Christians have foolishly bought into public school arguments about separation of church and state. This book goes back to all the court decisions which were made over the last 100 years which led to this common idea we hear today. The book clearly shows that Jefferson never intended separation of church and state the way it is being taken out of context today.I was shocked to find that it isn't even mentioned in the Constitution and am surprised so many Christians have bought into this.I now see that it is "freedom of religion, not freedom from religion."This part to me is the most helpful part of the book. This book will help you not feel like you are somehow "inflicting your religion on someone else" and that all laws are in essence, a legislation of someone's morality.1-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentally Flawed
The authors attempt to justify Christian elitism, arguing for a largely paternalistic government (pages 35-36 and 208 liken the government's societal role to that of a parent) that governs according to an objective "Moral Law."Giesler & Turek make the argument that all laws enforce morality at some level, so the question ultimately becomes, "whose morality?"The authors begin by defending the alleged right of governments to promote religion with taxpayer funds and resources, arguing that it's legitimateand constitutional for government to promote religion, just not any particular denomination (of Christianity); quite an interpretation of the First Amendment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reclaiming Affirmative Action in the face of White Privilege
Again, as he did in "White Like Me", Wise forces America to look itself in the face and examine the reflection with honesty and integrity. In this book, Wise appeals to common sense, and "scientific minds" for those who need proof for the otherwise obvious, and makes one of the most compelling arguments for affirmative action while rebutting, with countless research, the dubious arguments of those who claim that affirmative action, particulary in college admissions policies, is reverse discrimination and a system of "handouts" to unqualified blacks, who in essence steal the seats from qualified whites. He demonstrates how subscribers to such arguments base their claims almost entirely on the "racial gap" in SAT, ACT, and GRE scores that supposedly "prove" how whites are being discriminated against when blacks with lower test scores take whites' "rightly earned" seats. However, through use of countless research, Wise demonstrates not only how research after research shows that these standardized test neither reflect ability nor determine grades in college. He further shows through research how the tests fail to predict graduation rates for students of any race.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
Even as a person who cares about race issues and followed the Michigan cases with great interest, I found this book to be tremendously eye-opening.Mr. Wise examines many of the myths surrounding affirmative action programs and race, and methodically and persuasively "de-bunks" them, in many cases merely by unpacking the statistics that were cited in the Michigan cases themselves.I've already given this book to several friends to read, all of whom found it as absorbing and fascinating as I did.And I've cited it to many other friends, including a number of black friends, to point out the many myths that have heretofore gone unchallenged, even in the black community.I wish I could give a copy of this book to everyone in the United States.I'd love to witness and take part in the dialogue that came out of that reading project.I can't recommend this book highly enough. And do be sure to read White Like Me, Mr. Wise's other recently published book. ... Don't be put off by those reviewers who say it is the "New School" of writing or there are editing and gramatical errors that detract from this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why hasn't this been made into a movie?
I had to read this book for a class, and unlike other historical works, this one reads like a novel. The background story of Ossian Sweet is so moving that I could picture prominent African-American actors portraying his character and winning Academy Awards. That a director has not made this story into a movie is a shame.I teach American history and I had never heard of this case before, and with leading characters like Clarence Darrow, I found that surprising. This book is well worth reading--it won't disappoint!

3-0 out of 5 stars Contains interesting things, but somewhat disappointing.
I really thought this book would take a pretty broad view at constitutions and other fundamental government principles throughout the world. In the end, I wound up feeling misled and a little cheated.Fact:virtually all of this book is about the U.S. Constitution alone, and specific issues in American Constitutional law and thought. There are a handful of perfunctory mentions of other countries, but only South Africa gets more than a sentence or three:to wit, the last chapter is about a South African Constitutional Court decision holding that the government should be required to build adequate and affordable housing for children. An interesting discussion -- but too little, too late.5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligently designing democratic institutions
First of all, I would like to say that I appreciate Cass Sunstein works a lot. Basically, I try to read everything he writes. Although here and there I would have a slightly different opinion (v.g. in free speech matters I tend to have a broader view of this fundamental right) Sunstein's books are always insightful, refreshing and profound. He has deeply influenced my view on constitutional issues.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Classic
Things are quite simple. If there is A contemporary debate in jurisprudence, it is the so-called Hart/Dworkin debate. It all starts with this wonderful book that cuts deeply and challenges the theory of legal positivism on many levels. As for the theory of rights, Dworkin is a proponent of one of the most coherent, interesting and complex articulations of liberalism. In short: to the extent that fundamental rights are in play, the "political majority" (if such a thing exists) does not have the moral right totell members of the minority what to do with their own lives. Is not this a simple but powerful moral truth?

1-0 out of 5 stars Tyranny of a minority
Dworkin's thesis is that a tyranny of a minority is better than a tyranny of the majority. His argument is based on rigorous logic. But Justice Holmes observed that, "The life of the law has not been logic, it has been experience." Dworkin's theory is similar to those of Plato and Marx. But experience with the latters' theories has been negative. For an analysis of that experience, read Kark Popper's The Open Society and Its Enemies.

4-0 out of 5 stars His Logic is Flawless
... and this is a welcome breeze in the current political fog of an America drowning in six-shooters and visceral-response-teams. The Dworkin-challenge before us is the discovery of rights as emanating from the individual, and their use in daily life. This is where Dworkin may break down. Unlike Dershowitz's "Shouting Fire", for example, Dworkin does not write as if there is a human behind the logic who is actually extolling our necessary freedoms. Perhaps it is just me, but I'd like to hold on to and celebrate my rights and yours; I'd also like to affect change-- as would Dworkin, on a global scale. Though he sees humanity's natural path to decency, his writing "feels" far too cold to be effective.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You will be glad you read it, even if you disagree.
I will begin with criticisms of High Crimes & Misdemeanors. These are nagging little criticisms I make because the points I'll allude to are the sorts of things that would make me roll my eyes a little, or excuse myself for a couple of minutes for a breather if this were a conversation rather than a book.Ms. Coulter has suffered the fate of all those who seek to insert comic relief or sarcasm into serious material.Witticisms, sarcasm, barbed ironies, sage observations, facts, foregone conclusions, and research don't always blend perfectly to suit all the people all the time. Some of the (perhaps a little mean-spirited) humor at the expense of liberals, I found sophomoric and/or repetitive and/or a little snide. There, I've gone on record with that, and let me say that for me, these irritations accounted for about 12 sentences in the book.Usually they were the kickers to a "call & response", or a wrap-up rhetorical statement or question.I tried to bear in mind that I really didn't buy this book for the comedy.

Atheists have a lower divorce rate than born again christians but I guess thats just a fluke hu, Ann. They must be bad people somehow. People like Ann can't be christians because they shame one person for having an affair and then forgive another that is an alcoholic because he's a republican. She speaks to people who want to believe so bad they don't care that she doesn't have a christian bone in her body. True christians don't defame, judge or claime superiority. She doesn't have any idea of what being Jesus-like is. Oh and intelligent design is not science. Science is how Religion is why- They are too different questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a misguided book!
A lot of people consider this book a classic on social movements, but it provides no new research, offers no concepts original to McAdam, and sets up strawman opponents. Why is it still in print?

5-0 out of 5 stars great analysis
We first used this book in Dr. Skocpol's class in Chicago, & it has become an invaluable resource on how to study social movements.I often refer to it in class--along with other now-classic analyses--and a colleague is using it as required reading this coming Spring.

My perception has changed in ways immeasurable in regards to people with disabilities. Now, every single day I am aware of the small and large ways in which those with disabilities are discrimated against by temporarily able-bodied individuals. I am buying several copies to lend and give out, I hope others do the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good introduction to disability politics
This book is written in an easy-to-read style by a journalist who has covered disability issues for many years. It explains how he came to see that disability is a civil rights issue, just like racial or sexual discrimination. And it provides a very interesting history of the American disability movement in particular. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly RecommendedLifetime Guide on How to Prepare, Preserve and Protect Your Estate Matters
Patti Spencer, Esquire, is widely recognized as an authority on estate planning matters. She has written a weekly column in the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal, "Taxing Matters" since 1999.Her book, "YOUR ESTATE MATTERS" grew out of those weekly columns.Patti is known for her "down to earth" conversational style and for using humor in presenting what most times is a dry and dull subject.Patti presents very valuable information and advice which will enable the reader to greatly incerease their knowledge on the subject. The book is easy to read and helps debunk many myths about estate planning, including the one about:if you don't have a will, the state gets everything."This book is the one resource I have found that provides practical and understandable advice and reasonings regarding estate matters.Patti has really hit a home run with this book.It is a must read for anyone, from an individual, a retiree, a business person or anyone who is getting prepared to address their estate matters. In 35 years of professional life, this is one of those valuable resources that has the potential to have a profound impact on changing the way people think about the subject of estate planning.I highly recommennd this book and will be sure that my business clients, especially those with family owned businesses, get this book and read it cover to cover. It should become a part of every business owner's business survival kit and everyone's personal library.
5-0 out of 5 stars good organization of estate planning topics
The columns are interesting in themselves, but are much more searchable with an index and grouping by subject, starting from planning early in life, then progressing through changing needds at marraige, parenthood, retirment, and estate settlement. This is a great guide for learning about transfer of wealth and how the government is a party to it.The quotations at the beginning of some topics are a nice opeing statement to get you thinking philosophically about a subject, or just to give you a chuckle while reading an otherwise dry subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Humorous
I was thrilled to find that someone finally wrote a resouce book that I can understand that answers my financial and estate planning questions! The author's sense of humor actually turned dull topics into fun reading.I recommend this book for anyone planning to see an attorney for a will or estate settlement. You'll be well prepared. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Law in Medicine
Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances. It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization. He has taken a topic thatit difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading.Studentswill find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information for those new to health care law.
This book was very useful to me. I am a health information management student planning to enter a graduate health administration program. I took the class and this particular book was the text. Our instructor is a lawyerand runs risk management at our university hospital. The text furtherexplained basic legal priciples and related them to health care. The textis easy to read and gives several references to actual documents. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Call to Conscience - MLK Jr.
I was somewhat disappointed in this product. The sound quality on some of the speeches is pretty poor and amateurish. There is too much commentary and not enough of the speeches. Another cassette I had purchased before "The Voice of Greatness" ( which I believe you can find on Ebay in CD format) was much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves More Than 5 Stars!
The book "A Call To Conscience" gives excellent information surrounding Dr. King's speeches but it is the audio, hearing the speechs come from Dr. King's heart, that every person should experience- you cannot describe it in written language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awakened Conscience
I got the CD version and it awakened me.Not that I have been totally alseep. It just re-awakened me to the power of MLK's voice and message. So much power, truth, and Godliness. In this world that we live in today, I would advise anyone to pick this up.It is a must have, for anyone that needs help in putting things in perspective. ...
