3-0 out of 5 stars Great lawyer, okay book.
Law students who have just taken a course in professional repsonsibility may characterize Joe Jamail as a bad man, as unscrupulouas, as a jerk. That is probably true. But, argumentum ad hominem.Just because the man is bad, his work may not be.The facts are that Jamail is one of the most successful American lawyers of all time; that he fights a tremendous fight for his clients.Read this book for what it is, an account of an outstanding lawyer and his interesting cases; not as an intro to legal ethics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Reviewers Are Obviously NOT from Texas!
Mr. Jamail's book is terrific.Yes he's a little full of himself but his results are real and he has accomplished a lot in his legal career. He's also had a few major financial scores that have put him in a very unique class of lawyer. This is a fun book with many stories about individual cases that made an impression on Joe and thus inspired him to fight for his client.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enertaining
I found Joe's book entertaining and easy to read. His passion for his clients and job is a trait not held by most in the law profession. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Torts book ever
I used this book during my first year of law school and found it utterly useless.Aside from the terrible editing, the material is not all that well organized and the book is full of little "mini-cases" which present you with random little holdings of tort law.Furthermore, I found the analysis on some of the more important cases to be deficient.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Torts
This is a pretty good book-better than many 1st year law casebooks!
3-0 out of 5 stars gift?

5-0 out of 5 stars Good intro and overview.
I can't say I have any great love for the school of thought expounded inthis volume. But if it's mathematical models you want, it's mathematicalmodels you'll get in this fine introduction. (Me, I disagree with themathematical-models approach pretty much _in toto_ and favor the Austrianschool of economics -- von Mises, Rothbard, et alia -- on a foundation ofrationalism. But my disagreement doesn't detract from the quality ofMiceli's presentation.)5-0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook Treatment of the Economics of Law
Thomas Miceli wrote the most comprehensive technical treatment of law and economics. The text contains formal mathematical models with a coherent coverage of the main issues in contracts, property, torts, and litigation. The book is written for an educated audience. Unquestionably the best amongthe wide-range treatments of law and economics. Comparable in quality andtechnical sophistication to Posner-Landes's treatment of tort law andShavell's treatment of accident law. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful.
Don't waste your time. Case briefs suck. STructure is horrible. There isn't any way to print easily. buy CT Administrative Law instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not that helpful
The case briefs are subpar and the software is worse. The skeletal summaries of each case aren't that helpful, and more detail and analysis is found in competitor'sbriefs. The real downside of the software, however, is that it is very clumsy and difficult to use.You can't copy/paste between the e-Legalines program and whatever other program you usually use for notes.Formatting options are terrible and the search isn't as useful as a regular search.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting To Say The Least
I am a college student and was forced to read this book for one of my Political Science classes. I must give Ms. Derthick credit. She wrote a piece that was very informative and gave you an inside look at what politics is really about. It takes you from the careful court systems, to protective government agencies, to individuals begging for compensation. It was a thick read, very slow for most of my classmates to get through. I believe she was flawed in her view of litigation over legislation. She made it clear that we should pursue legislation over litigation, though when it came to legislation, it seemed like she had a "How dare they do that" attitude. All I have to say is that if you are a student that is required to read this book, hold on because you are in for a ride. I also hope you have a lot of free time because it will take you a little while to read and digest all the information this book has to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provoking Look at Public Policy and the Tobacco Industry
"In "Up in Smoke," Martha A. Derthick, former professor of government at the University of Virginia and author or coauthor of several studies of the U.S. policy process, describes and analyzes the events leading to the historic 1998 tobacco settlement with the states. She concludes that these developments continue an unfortunate movement away from representative democratic negotiation toward a process of "adversarial legalism" that relegates democratic politics to the sidelines of public policy."5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Image of American Politics
Derthick's story of the tobacco wars is the real deal of American politics, not the civics you learned in high school. Unlike some writers, Derthick doesn't moralize about tobacco. Some looking for fevered preaching may be put off by her detachment and even skepticism about the anti-tobacco movement. Careful readers, however, will find all the creepy details about tobacco companies they have come to expect. Derthick is objective, and the tobacco executives are, objectively, creepy. The best part about this book, though, is that Derthick has a deep understanding about American politics, and the reader will take away sharp images of how policy is made--from trial lawyers to crusading agencies, from university faculty and health professionals to the muddle in Congress. It's all here, in one timely and highly readable book. ... Read more
