What a great casebook!
I really enjoyed this casebook. In contrast to other books, like the Calamari and Perillo Contracts Casebook (which has only cases one after another), this book not only has good discussion but the main cases are supplemented by smaller cases so you get a fuller picture of the law. After you read a case, there is a "discussion" section where the author discusses other similar cases in that area and the questions that can arise (what if? type of questions), which really get you thinking. Some people have said Epstein presents the law as he would like it to be, or that it's too focused on strict liability, but it's nothing I noticed. For my torts class this book is the only one we have to read, it's like a 2-in-1, instead of having to lug around two books, one for cases and one for law (like Calamari on Contracts, for example). The material presented in this book is clear and easy to understand and the reading is involving. Maybe I just like torts, I don't know, but I would have to say this is my favorite law book so far.

Entirely too much Epstein and too little tort law
I definitely agree with the reviewer that Epstein too often presents the law as he wishes it were (and that the mainstream does not wish for), rather than the way it is. This man is such a strong believer in strict liability that he argues for this view over and over and over ... to the point at which I want to sue him for IIMD!
Good Casebook
Full Disclosure: I had Epstein as a professor (though not for torts) and like him personally.The critical review below is unfair.Epstein's book is certainly slanted towards a law and economics approach to torts, but it is hardly the ideological screed that the review makes it out to be.Epstein often presents cases taking approaches with which he would probably not agree and acknowledges when his own views differ from the majority opinion (which, as noted below, happens frequently).Especially when presenting arguments in the notes, Epstein almost always cites case law and law review articles contradicting him.It is true that the book probably does not spend enough time addressing reasoning that is not based in law and economics, but all case books have their flaws and this is the only signicant one I can find with this book.On the other side, the editing is very good, the chapters present the concepts in an intuitive order, and the notes to the cases were among the most interesting that I read in law school.Moreover, for students who are struggling to grasp the material, there is the Epstein treatise, which follows the book closely and explains the topics in a more straightforward manner (obviously at the cost of some the inherent complexity of the issues, but it makes a good supplement).Finally, as between a book that emphasizes law and economics in torts and one that emphasizes, say, corrective justice, it seems more valuable to have one that emphasizes law and econ because this is the less intuitive mode of analysis of the subject for most students.In a socratically taught class, it's likely that students will raise corrective justice issues on their own, when these can be compared with the material from the book, but it is less probable that students will fully calculate the economic ramifications of a precedential decision's effect on future actors' incentives unless they are encouraged to think this way when reading the cases.In sum, although the book would probably improve if it were not quite so heavily weighted towards law and economics, it is still a well edited, intuitively structured casebook with note material that should engage and interest students in the subject. ... A Valuable Resource if Stuck in Contract Legalese
If you've ever received a book contract from a general publisher, it can be a frightening experience. I know firsthand because I have a number of these contracts in my files--which I have negotiated and ultimately signed (and the book was publisihed). Also I know how it feels to be the editor negotiating with the writer or the literary agent, since I'm an acquisitions editor for a book publisher.
A very useful and informative book
This book shows you a sample contract then breaks it down and explains every little piece. There are many alternative clauses too, showing you how to retain different rights and territories, handle secondary rights like audio and movie, and so on.
Excellent
Excellent for writing Author/Publisher contracts from the perspective of the Publisher. Explains each clause in the sample contracts, gives many many variations, and helps protect the publisher from many events that (in my experience) other lawyers/books did not include in their contracts.Read more

Humanizing Identity Theft
Much has been written about identity theft, and what people have to go through to clear their credit reports. But what I had never given much thought to is that identity theft goes much beyond stealing identities for financial gain. In fact, what is much more difficult to deal with is when your identity is stolen and used by criminals in general. Try to clear a supposed criminal record. And if you are in the United States, try to do that if you are black or Hispanic. That is just part of the excellent discussions you will find in Bob Sullivan's Your Evil Twin: Behind the Identity Theft Epidemic (August 2004, John Wiley & Sons, 314 Pages, ISBN 0471648108).
This could have been so much better
To begin with, I was terribly distracted by all the typographical/spelling and editing errors that ran rampant in this book.Why would anyone put a book out for sale that hasn't been proofread?
Almost Like a good mystery book, but real
This book is all about a problem that simply didn't exist only a few years ago. Now it's become the fastest growing white collar crime in America. It strikes in every community from the smallest to the largest. The crime is profitable, nearly unpreventable, and hardly ever prosecuted (by one estimate only one out of every 700 incidents). It's the down side of the information super highway. Getting a bit of information about a person is easy, and then you can get a bit more. Soon you can buy a car in his name, get credit cards in his name, like the TV commercial, you're on the beach, your credit cards are in the airplane flying by.

This book is not about getting insurance companies to pay
This book is about why you should hire this attorney to represent you.There is virtually no help here if you want to do it yourself.

This is a great little book that could save your life.
I've read this book cover to cover, and it is both highly informative and easy to digest.Shernoff shows why he is preeminent in his field as a consumer lawyer, and his book is designed to help people avoid thenecessity of going to court. Reading this book could save your life.

Good presentation of consumer issues in claims processing

Brilliant out of the box thinking
I read this book cover to cover in two days.
