1-0 out of 5 stars do NOT use this as a textbook
The very first sentence of the Prologue of this book contains a grammatical error (it should be "principles," not "principals") and I am sorry to say that things don't get much better.I purchased this book as a text for an Employment Law class and it was terrible; I quit using it halfway through the course and recommended the instructor find another text. The author seems to think he's the most credible person in the world but, as someone who is also a human resources practitioner, I can assert from experience that many of his opinions (several of which are presented as "facts") are wrong. He clearly doesn't even understand what the field of human resources IS, and in many cases I found his tone very offensive.1-0 out of 5 stars Hodgepodge of mismatched topics
Sovereign seems to skip around often in a half-hearted effort at being comprehensive. The cases are not very recent, despite the publication date, and the book has a definite lack of flow.It is almost as if theauthor threw together several mismatched segments and forgot to edit it forcomprehension and cohesiveness.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate on the law; suffers from poor editing
I have to use this book as the text for a class I teach in Employment Law (i.e., non-collective-bargaining law) to students matriculating to a Master of Science Degree in Human Resources. The text adequately surveys the law, but suffers from terrible proofing and editing; it also needs an update, because the 1994 edition obviously was not written any later than early 1993, based on the omission of certain important U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1994 and since. The book also suffers from an extremely strong pro-management tone; a more balanced approach would serve the untutored reader better. There are better books, such as the ABA Guide, which I commend to potential readers of this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Premiere text not aging gracefully
As a security professional and attorney with more than 30 years of experience, I have used this text in my graduate courses on security case law and security management for more than eight years with more than 400 students at two universities. The clarity of the author's text and the case-based format makes it an ideal text.5-0 out of 5 stars K-Mart Law (i.e. The Rentacop's Bible)
According to editor David A. Maxwell, the role of subsidized law enforcement is becoming increasingly supplanted by private security personnel (primarily as a result of municipal tax dollars spreading too thin, but also as a buffer to litigation from citizens injured and/or victimized on private property), and as a result, the criminal justice system will be forced to engineer new legal paradigms to control these corporate spaces, what with our "public" environments becoming increasingly privatized (shopping malls, apartment buildings, condominiums, retail outlets, hotels, bars, restaurants, casinos, health care institutions), a postmodern Main Street, fragmented and decentralized. What the industry needs (and what Maxwell provides) are a series of discourses that explore these new legal dangers and issues of accountability, providing a code of ethics for underpaid, underrespected "rentacops" who nevertheless find themselves bearing the brunt of municipal police functionality, badge-wearing "civilians" with limited arrest and investigatory powers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Iron determination
Like some other reviewers I came across this book after seeing the movie North Country. The movie though is just good entertainment pulling at the heartstrings and very loosely based on the legal problems of single mother Lois Jenson.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
A story of great courage and resolve, of working conditions beyond the pale, and the vicissitudes of the courts. Well written, in journalistic style, this is a page-turner, as well as being thoroughly researched, and factually accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Class Action
This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. This is something our school kids should be required to read as well. The 2 ladies who wrote this book did an excellent job of telling Lois Jenson's real story. Her story, while tragic, needs to be told. The movie doesn't do this book justice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good - Not excellent
I just took a college level class in which we used this book as the textbook. There is a lot of good information inside which provides a good introduction to the novice on how the process of collective bargaining works. It begins with the history of how it started and continues through the specific issues that collective bargaining entails. There is even a copy of the National Labor Relations Act in the back of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book for the novice negotiator or student.Current, easy to read, practical examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise & complete
The authors provide a complete & concise discussion of the process of collective bargaining within a general labor relations context. Many, current cases, tips from experts, and historical references help present the concepts. A solid text for the novice negotiator or interested student. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Guide Has it All
This is a completele kit for making your company's own employee handbook. There is legal information, state specific information, resources to follow for your specific needs, and then, the best part of all, there is CD that comes with this that has everything you need already typed for you. All you have to do is insert the CD and save the files, which are in MS Word, and voila - you have it. The only thing you have to do is decide which policies you want for your company, fill in a few blanks, change the TOC and you are ready to print it out! A very practical and easy way to create your own employee handbook! I was quite impressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Discriminating Only
I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I read this book in order to survive a law class.I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights. This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material. For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening.Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople. For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation. However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser.Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker.Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read. But it is useful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for every educator and lawyer in education.
If I could have given this book 4 and a half stars I would have done so. The only complaint that I have about this tome is that many of the court cases that I am interested in are not printed in part or entirety in this book. I will have to go to the law library to get the rest of the information that I need. This book was not in my law classes, but rather in a class for school administrators. I am writing on and very interested in the legal history of education, and this was a great find for me. Not only does it give pertinent information about all educational law, but the specific references and legal issues are there for gender and race discrimination in schools, busing, special education, etc. Any teacher, researcher, or lawyer in this field cannot just pick up a book that is only on their area such as special education, because the full information is not there nor does it make sense out of context of legal history. In order to understand the reason why Congress and courts saw the need to coin a new law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) rather than rely upon previous ammendments to other laws such as the Civil Rights Act and other education acts in the 1960's it is vital that the reader know the history and how those ammendments failed to guarantee educational rights for those with disabilities. This book is a vital reference that provides this information, the legal history, and it is well worth the money spent on it. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
This is an awesome book! It is so easy to read and understand. It is written so that anybody can understand it; it's not full of hard to understand legalese.

5-0 out of 5 stars A compendium of articulate criticisms of the flaws
The FMLA: Understanding The Family And Medical Leave Act by attorney Will Aitchison is a compendium of articulate criticisms of the flaws in the complicated and questionably drafted Family And Medical Leave Act, as well as a detailed dissection and explanation of the act's purpose, applications, and meaning accessibly presented for both governmental policy mavens, corporate executives, and non-specialist general readers alike. Intended for employers and employees alike, The FMLA deftly describes legal terms of varying complexity in straightforward layman's prose, and gives a nod to common sense in helping readers understand the scope and ramifications of this important law. The FMLA is an invaluable resource which should be considered a core contribution to the reference collections of the legal, medical, governmental, and community advocacy organizations and groups. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for University Administrators
Kaplin & Lee's "The Law of Higher Education (Third Edition)" was the required text for a graduate course, "Legal Aspects of Higher Education" and should be present on the bookshelf of any university administrator. The book's subtitle, "A Comprehensive Guide to Legal Implications of Administrative Decision Making," is wholly accurate in describing the scope and utility of this massive tome (over 1,000 pages from cover to cover).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Foundation of Labor Relations Practice
Hardin is to theoretical and strategic labor relations as Elkouri is to contract administration. It is the place my staff is instructed to start on any collective bargaining issue. Also as with Elkouri, it tries so hard to be balanced that neither management nor union regotiators may be able to find the hard edges they might be looking for.Its utility in the public sector depends on how similar the state or local bargaining law is to the National Labor Relations Act.If the bargaining duty language is similar to the NLRA, the public sector practitioner will find Hardin useful. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I think there are better books to use
This book is not for the person just getting an intiation into school law.It is too condense and only gives blurbs of the verdicts in each case by quoting the appellate and US supreme court judges which are oft times convoluted, the author leaves out an indepth explanation of the nuts and bolts.I refer to this book as the Reader's Digest version of school law. Also, the print is microscopic which is really hard on the eyes.
