A book that has it's groundings firmly set into the the real world, dealing with real problems and real people, providing real life examples and presenting all the legal aspects of the entertaintment business. Don't Negotiate a Labor Contract Without It
"Negotiating a Labor Contract" by Charles S. Loughran is anoutstanding how-to book. Itbreaks down a highly complex subject in aneasily understood manner.There is no legal mumbo-jumbo in this book-just a practical, to the point, step-by-step overview of the entire laborcontract negotiating process. The book benefits not only the laborrelations professional. Operations people will gain a strongunderstanding of the negotiating process, including the preparationrequired prior to beginnning bargaining.It will allow managementtoposition themselves to get the best deal possible.The book's appendix includes detailed checklists on, among other items,negotiations andstrike contingency preparation.It also includes a succinct overview ofthe law controlling labor negotiations.The book was indispensable for meas a member of the negotiating team during a protracted nine-monthnegotiation that included a union reneg, a tie ratification vote,elimination of dues check-off and declaration of impasse.With each twistand turn in the road, there are people who gladly will offer advice. Throughout it all, Charles Loughran was there to keep me pointed in theright direction. I also found the book invaluable when I was assignedto be chief spokesperson for several small bargaining unit negotiations.Irecommend the book strongly to anyone who is involved, in any way, in laborcontract negotiations. It's about content.
I've read the other reviews, and yes, I agree that Waxman would have been well served by having a better technical writer do a professional run-through to clean up the style. Releasing awell-edited second edition would be an improvement. That having been said, however, I agree with other reviewers that in CONTENT this book is well worth the investment and the read.If you are an employer or an employee and you want to know the pros and cons and how-tos of independent contracting vs. conventional employment, then you will not be disappointed with what there is to be learned by reading this book.Having read it, you will be in a position to create a good relationship with contractors, the local authorities, and the IRS, and you will know what to ask them, and what to tell them. Forgive the style; it is good data.
Poorly and unprofessionally written, self-aggrandizing
This book never should have been published. It is one of the most poorly written (I daresay, ignorently written) books I have had the displeasure to encounter. The author has a big axe to grind about government, and is highly politicized. There may be kernals of information here, but I don't trust anything the author says. I doubt that the content was controlled with fact-checking, corroboration, or even basic editing. These bits may give you a sense of how the book goes:
Potentially useful, but approach with caution
Writers Club Press is a publish-on-demand vanity press, so this book has not been through the normal editorial and fact-checking procedures of similar books from established publishing houses. The lack of editing shows in the writing style of the first several chapters, which read like an advertising brochure for the author's law practice. The author also has the irritating tendency to use self-coined two-letter acronyms throughout without explaining them the first time they come up (he includes a list in the very front of the book, instead, which makes for lots of flipping back and forth). In between the "I can set this up for you" comments, though, is some potentially useful information, stated in easy-to-understand terms.

If you are running a small business, you will definitely need some sort of agreements to use with your clients or vendors. This Nolo guide should be used in conjunction with another Nolo guide 'How to Create Noncompete Agreements' to have the best combination of contracts to protect yourself. Read more

Arbitration with Ease
As an novice union represenative I needed some guidance on how to prepare and due arbitrations/grievances. This book has helped me in my first three mediations and now is helping me get ready for my first arbitration case. It gives some excellent insight (e.g. notebook and file box idea). It also helps you in doing your research on questioning, cross examination of your witness. It gives you some questions to ask and not to ask. For an indidvidual or union steward with no background in paralegal or law I would recommend this book to be on the top 3 of your book list to have as a union steward. Not what I expected
I was looking for something more detailed on different laws that someone in HR should know.I felt this book was too broad and the way it was written was a little hard to read.If you are a business owner trying to get the basic "dos and don'ts" this may work, otherwise I would look elsewhere.

not for law students
This is not a good study guide for an employment law class.Too basic and general.This may be good for a business owner wanting basic info about hiring/firing etc, but they would definitely still need to seek the advice of an attorney.
